Surfing the Modeling of pos Taggers in Low-Resource Scenarios
The recent trend toward the application of deep structured techniques has revealed the limits of huge models in natural language processing. This has reawakened the interest in traditional machine learning algorithms, which have proved still to be competitive in certain contexts, particularly in low-resource settings. In parallel, model selection has become an essential task to boost performance at reasonable cost, even more so when we talk about processes involving domains where the training and/or computational resources are scarce. Against this backdrop, we evaluate the early estimation of learning curves as a practical mechanism for selecting the most appropriate model in scenarios characterized by the use of non-deep learners in resource-lean settings. On the basis of a formal approximation model previously evaluated under conditions of wide availability of training and validation resources, we study the reliability of such an approach in a different and much more demanding operational environment. Using as a case study the generation of pos taggers for Galician, a language belonging to the Western Ibero-Romance group, the experimental results are consistent with our expectations.
Galician Female Architects—A Critical Approach to Inequality in the Architectural Profession (1931–1986)
The remoteness of Galicia, a cultural and linguistic bridge between Portugal and Spain, did not prevent it from playing a significant role in the history of female architects in the Iberian Peninsula. Nine Galician pioneers have carved the path since the first generation of Spanish female architects outlined the precedents during the Second Spanish Republic (1931–1939). They were also present in an initial period, even if housewifization theories were intensively fueled by the dictatorship (1939–1975); likewise during the continuity period in the transition to democracy (1975–1982), and the second wave of feminism. However, it would not be until progressive democratic institutionalization (1982–1986) that more women gained access to architectural studies in university (consolidation period); but what is the legacy of these pioneers? Are Galician female architects ‘in transition’ yet? Based on data primarily collected by research group MAGA and released publications, this piece explores how, despite their achievements, their recognition is still superficial. And even if the number of undergraduate students reached quantitative equality, female practitioners continue to leave architecture and these numbers are increasing. Towards a critical approach to inequality in the profession, this article researches the history—and stories—of Galician female architects to examine how far we are from effective equality in the Galician architectural world.
Formas de tratamento nos textos galegos do século XVIII
The aim of this contribution is to present a description of the system of Galician forms of address during the eighteenth century, taking as starting point the evidence recorded in Gondomar. This is a key stage in the history of Galician, and in particular with regard to its forms of address, since within this period the address forms of the Old Regime and its medieval remains end up disappearing, and, at the same time, the characteristics of forms of address in contemporary Galician start emerging. By taking into account the descriptions made by Gonzalo Correas in his Arte Kastellana (1627) with respect to Spanish from the first decades of the seventeenth century, we analyse the evolution of Galician forms of address from the eighteenth century, since the depictions in Gonzalo Correas about Spanish forms and usage conditions are similar to those in seventeenth-century Galician. This reference point will allow us to describe, by similarity or by contrast, the evolution and dynamics evidenced by Galician texts of the eighteenth century, and even the relative chronology of some changes in relation to those that took place in Portuguese and Spanish. In the presentation, we combine the analysis of the different evolutionary lines revealed by the corpus and the illustration with examples of use extracted from it. With this objective, we try to always bear in mind the complex system of social relations that the corpus reflects as well as the factors that determine the selection of forms in each specific communicative act, depending on the speaker and the addressee concerned in each case.
This article aims to expand the scope of philological science in relation to the Theory of Literature, turning to textual marks in medieval Galician-Portuguese manuscripts that allow us to consider the presence of the poetic voice in performance. In order to achieve this, there is initially the need for an epistemological change that breaks with graphocentric paradigms from Ong (1998), Zumthor (1993, 2010), Lemaire (1987, 2013) and Havelock (1996). Subsequently, it is done the survey and analysis of possible textual marks of the voice in performance, especially the delocutive verbal deixis and the locative and temporal adverbial deixis, in the sis medieval tensions, using expository paintings of the data ascertained in the tensions. Finally, it is delimited, from the previous research, the suggested methodological procedures that provide a Philology of the voice in performance in Galician-Portuguese medieval songs. In addition to the references already mentioned, we refer to Dubois et al. (2014) and, as a source of the poetic texts studied, to  Aguiar (2023).
Prefixation in medieval literary Galician
This article explores the presence of prefixation in medieval Galician, based on a selection of literary texts. The first section offers a brief description of the concept of prefixation, before moving on, in section two, to examine and assess the types of prefixation used in the different word-formation processes (derivation, compounding, mixed). The final part of the study looks at the prefixal system in medieval literary Galician. Adapted from the source document
