Game of thrones and philosophy
An in-depth look at the philosophical issues behind HBO's Game of Thrones television series and the books that inspired it George R.R. Martin's New York Times bestselling epic fantasy book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, and the HBO television show adapted from it, have earned critical acclaim and inspired fanatic devotion. This book delves into the many philosophical questions that arise in this complex, character-driven series, including: Is it right for a \"good\" king to usurp the throne of a \"bad\" one and murder his family? How far should you go to protect your family and its secrets? In a fantasy universe with medieval mores and ethics, can female characters reflect modern feminist ideals? - Timed for the premiere of the second season of the HBO Game of Thrones series - Gives new perspectives on the characters, storylines, and themes of Game of Thrones - Draws on great philosophers from ancient Greece to modern America to explore intriguing topics such as the strange creatures of Westeros, the incestuous relationship of Jaime and Cersei Lannister, and what the kings of Westeros can show us about virtue and honor (or the lack thereof) as they play their game of thrones Essential reading for fans, Game of Thrones and Philosophy will enrich your experience of your favorite medieval fantasy series.
Game of Thrones and Tourism Impacts On Croatian Housing Prices
2022
The Game of Thrones television program was widely seen throughout the world. The show acted as an advertisement for travel and home purchases in the Republic of Croatia. A hedonic least squares regression model adjusted for autocorrelation is used to consider the impact of the
television show, tourist visits to the country, and domestic personal income on the housing price index. The descriptive statistics and regression results suggest that the television show and tourism impact existing housing prices. Visitors to the country purchased or rented enough housing
to cause demand to increase for residential properties, which results in a higher housing price index. Per capita domestic income is not a significant factor influencing the housing price index for existing dwellings.

Consumers
2022
PurposeFans have been characterized as specialized consumers who often express disagreements with the entertainment industry's decisions, especially when it comes to the original content of the works that serve as the basis for the development of media products, evidencing a kind of consumer resistance. Under a Foucauldian perspective aligned with the consumer culture theory (CCT), power relations are established in a dynamic of power exercise and resistance to power. Based on this, the authors pose the following research question: how do fans of media products resist the changes made by the entertainment industry in relation to their canons?Design/methodology/approachThe authors adopted the Foucault's genealogy of power as a method, analyzing the comments posted on the Westeros.Org website, the main discussion forum of fans of A Song of Ice and Fire (ASoIaF) book series and Game of Thrones (GoT) TV series.FindingsThe findings reveal ways of resistance in relation to the adaptation of the media text permeated by an entertainment dispositif, which considers the adaptation legitimate, and a fannish dispositif, which criticizes the way this adaptation was made. However, their empirical categories reveal that they are forged not only from singularities but also from overlaps. The authors conclude, therefore, that this process occurs in an agonist way, in which conflicts are fought as a reciprocal incitement revealing a productive and ethical relationship.Originality/valueThe agonism shows how consumers can simultaneously be led to incorporate and resist to discourses and market practices. This demonstrates how resistance is not necessarily a force opposed to another, but a dynamic of reciprocal negotiation.

Brace yourselves, pirates are coming! the effects of Game of Thrones leak on TV viewership
2022
Pre-release leaks of cultural content incentivise consumers to look for unauthorised sources. I find that such events not only affect the leaked titles but also carry spillover effects for other titles with a shared audience, suggesting the existence of strong switching costs associated with the illegal sources. I use a unique dataset on a sample of TV shows aired around the time of a pre-release leak of a large audience TV show (Game of Thrones). The results of a difference-in-differences analysis indicate that the leaked show lost viewership for both the leaked episodes and those that followed. More importantly, the event seems to have affected other TV shows that may share an audience with the leaked show. Finally, my results for the shows with a shared audience are corroborated by evidence of an increase in web searches for online sources of their episodes. These findings suggest that one-time events incentivising piracy can carry effects beyond the period and initial focus.

Television-Induced Tourism: Evidence from Croatia
2020
This paper analyzes the extent to which the filming of the popular television show Game of Thrones affected tourism in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik. Using monthly data and applying difference-in-differences, the study shows that the impact of airing Game of Thrones episodes filmed in Dubrovnik corresponded to approximately 5000 additional tourism overnights per month, or approximately 59,000 per year. Existing results were extended to show that the additional overnights mainly occur during the tourism off-season when transportation and lodging prices are ostensibly lower, consistent with anecdotal evidence. The results provide another example that the filming of a television show can increase the attractiveness of an already well-established and globally-known destination. The results are especially useful for tourism industries in countries with highly seasonal tourism activities, like Croatia, that usually depend on beneficial climatic conditions, which are highly unpredictable and volatile. Filming of popular television shows and increased tourism may provide additional revenue for local economies and help smooth seasonal and yearly volatility of local income.
