In this work we study strong spectral properties of Ruelle transfer operators related to a large family of Gibbs measures for contact
Anosov flows. The ultimate aim is to establish exponential decay of correlations for Hölder observables with respect to a very general
class of Gibbs measures. The approach invented in 1997 by Dolgopyat in “On decay of correlations in Anosov flows” and further developed
in Stoyanov (2011) is substantially refined here, allowing to deal with much more general situations than before, although we still
restrict ourselves to the uniformly hyperbolic case. A rather general procedure is established which produces the desired estimates
whenever the Gibbs measure admits a Pesin set with exponentially small tails, that is a Pesin set whose preimages along the flow have
measures decaying exponentially fast. We call such Gibbs measures regular. Recent results in Gouëzel and Stoyanov (2019) prove existence
of such Pesin sets for hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and flows for a large variety of Gibbs measures determined by Hölder continuous
potentials. The strong spectral estimates for Ruelle operators and well-established techniques lead to exponential decay of correlations
for Hölder continuous observables, as well as to some other consequences such as: (a) existence of a non-zero analytic continuation of
the Ruelle zeta function with a pole at the entropy in a vertical strip containing the entropy in its interior; (b) a Prime Orbit
Theorem with an exponentially small error.

We develop cohomological interpretations for several types of automorphic forms for Hecke triangle groups of infinite covolume. We
then use these interpretations to establish explicit isomorphisms between spaces of automorphic forms, cohomology spaces and spaces of
eigenfunctions of transfer operators. These results show a deep relation between spectral entities of Hecke surfaces of infinite volume
and the dynamics of their geodesic flows.

In all dimensions, we prove that the marked length spectrum of a Riemannian manifold (M, g) with Anosov geodesic flow and non-positive curvature locally determines the metric in the sense that two close enough metrics with the same marked length spectrum are isometric. In addition, we provide a new stability estimate quantifying how the marked length spectrum controls the distance between the isometry classes of metrics. In dimension 2 we obtain similar results for general metrics with Anosov geodesic flows. We also solve locally a rigidity conjecture of Croke relating volume and marked length spectrum for the same category of metrics. Finally, by a compactness argument, we show that the set of negatively curved metrics (up to isometry) with the same marked length spectrum and with curvature in a bounded set of C
∞ is finite.

Open problems and questions about geodesics
2021
The paper surveys open problems and questions related to geodesics defined by Riemannian, Finsler, semi-Riemannian and magnetic structures on manifolds. It is an extended report on problem sessions held during the International Workshop on Geodesics in August 2010 at the Chern Institute of Mathematics in Tianjin.

We refine the recent local rigidity result for the marked length spectrum obtained by the first and third author in [GL19] and give an alternative proof using the geodesic stretch between two Anosov flows and some uniform estimate on the variance appearing in the central limit theorem for Anosov geodesic flows. In turn, we also introduce a new pressure metric on the space of isometry classes, which reduces to the Weil–Petersson metric in the case of Teichmüller space and is related to the works [BCLS15, MM08].

Matrix-Langevin Distribution
2018
A novel approach is presented for constructing polynomial chaos representations of scalar quantities of interest (QoI) that extends previously developed methods for adaptation in Homogeneous Chaos spaces. In this work, we develop a Bayesian formulation of the problem that characterizes the posterior distributions of the series coefficients and the adaptation rotation matrix acting on the Gaussian input variables. The adaptation matrix is thus construed as a new parameter of the map from input to QoI, estimated through Bayesian inference. For the computation of the coefficients' posterior distribution, we use a variational inference approach that approximates the posterior with a member of the same exponential family as the prior, such that it minimizes a Kullback–Leibler criterion. On the other hand, the posterior distribution of the rotation matrix is explored by employing a Geodesic Monte Carlo sampling approach, consisting of a variation of the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm for embedded manifolds, in our case, the Stiefel manifold of orthonormal matrices. The performance of our method is demonstrated through a series of numerical examples, including the problem of multiphase flow in heterogeneous porous media.

Efficient computation of null geodesics with applications to coherent vortex detection
2017
Recent results suggest that boundaries of coherent fluid vortices (elliptic coherent structures) can be identified as closed null geodesics of appropriate Lorentzian metrics defined on the flow domain. Here we derive an automated method for computing such null geodesics based on the geometry of the underlying geodesic flow. Our approach simplifies and improves existing procedures for computing variationally defined Eulerian and Lagrangian vortex boundaries. As an illustration, we compute objective vortex boundaries from satellite-inferred ocean velocity data. A MATLAB implementation of our method is available at https://github.com/MattiaSerra/Closed-Null-Geodesics-2D.

Simplicity of the Lyapunov spectrum for classes of Anosov flows
2023
For

, we prove that in a

$C^{k}$
-dense set of some classes of
$C^{k}$
-Anosov flows, all Lyapunov exponents have multiplicity one with respect to appropriate measures. The classes are geodesic flows with equilibrium states of Holder-continuous potentials, volume-preserving flows, and all fiber-bunched Anosov flows with equilibrium states of Holder-continuous potentials.
