Stamps not about to give up on Gesser despite erratic debut

CALGARY - Even with a perfect record to his credit, Calgary Stampeders quarterback Jason Gesser might face more skepticism heading into tonight's game than he did before his Canadian Football League debut in Hamilton last week. \"Well, Henry played three halves that I can think of at the beginning of the year that were equally as bad as Jason's first half the first half against Ottawa, B.C. and Toronto. He didn't execute, he threw the ball at the ground, he threw it up in the air, he made bad decisions, he fumbled. But Jason, who hasn't played a lick in three years, does that and all of a sudden he's no good? It's perception. In the second half against Hamilton, Gesser threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns.

Stamps flex muscles on defence

Defensive linemen Jerame Southern, Randy Chevrier, Rahim Abdullah, Sheldon Napastuk and Terrence Patrick manhandled Hamilton's pass protection, batted down balls, sacked the quarterback three times and held running back Troy Davis to 32 rushing yards. While Calgary's defence was the reason quarterback Jason Gesser, won his first CFL start, special teams were a close second. With two of three phases in top shape, the Stamps can afford to let Gesser find his bearings over the next few weeks at a more manageable pace. Gesser played Saturday in place of injured starter Henry Burris.

While [Jason Gesser] made countless mistakes and struggled mightily for three quarters he had four picks and four completions at one point Calgary's defence and special teams kept the team in a position to win. With four interceptions already on his record, Gesser led the offence out to begin a drive at Calgary's 20-yard line its worst field position of the night. These two phases gave Gesser time to find his groove and Calgary's coaches took a huge leap of faith by letting him work through his troubles.

Stamps look to kick-start running game
2005
CALGARY - The Calgary Stampeders need to get Joffrey Reynolds back in the game plan. With quarterback Jason Gesser making his first Canadian Football League start Saturday in Hamilton, the Stamps will be in trouble if they can't find a way to spring their tailback. \"The problem is that we haven't been as physical as we should be on the line of scrimmage and Joffrey has been guessing about where to run with the ball,\" said offensive co-ordinator/line coach Steve Buratto. \"Part of it because there isn't any place to go, so he's trying to bounce it around there to try and make a big play.

Pickings slim early for Stamps

2006
Because of Jason Gesser, the Calgary Stampeders can catch a few extra winks before today's CFL college entry draft. The quarterback cost Calgary its first-round pick when he was acquired from the B.C. Lions last season. As a result, the Stamps won't have a presence on the conference call until the 13th selection. The Stamps drafted six players last season -- defensive lineman Miguel Robede, whose signing will be announced today, with the first overall pick, offensive linemen Godfrey Ellis, John Comiskey and Kyler Jukes, linebacker David Hewson and receiver Brett Ralph. All but Hewson, who was cut last spring, will be in training camp next month.

Veteran QB enjoys his return to action
2006
Regular starting quarterback Joe Germaine is still out of action as his broken finger heals. Now, however, the Blaze won't be tempted to rush him back into action. [Kelly], who owns league records in passing yards and completions, needed just one game to establish himself as a dependable thrower. The difference between Kelly and Jason Gesser -- who started, and lost, the previous four games -- according to offensive specialist Siaha Burley, is quickly evident. With performances like the one he had in his Utah debut, Blaze fans could get real comfortable with Kelly, too.
