Saluting heroes of an unheroic war
2002
Both characters are the primary focal points of [Randall Wallace]'s adaptation, with [Mel Gibson] pulling John Wayne duty as the cigar- chomping, good-natured [Harold G. Moore], and \"Saving Private Ryan\" alumnus [Barry Pepper], as the sidelines [Joseph L. Galloway], who eventually is forced to drop his camera and pick up a gun. (The film is framed by Galloway's literary narration and reflective interpretation of the 36-year-old events.) Before the 'copters dump the 7th Cavalry soldiers in the Ia Drang Valley, we've met several more of their number on a limited basis, including Moore's crotchety crony, the silver-haired Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley, played by [Sam Elliott] exactly like you'd expect; and head pilot Maj. Bruce Crandall, in which a wasted [Greg Kinnear] gets three or four sustained lines of dialogue before being consigned to the 'copter, where he can barely be glimpsed thereafter as he whisks supplies in and flies casualties out. Then there was one ... : Two weeks ago, we reported the glaring gaps among major Oscar-nominated films that have to play a theatrical engagement in Bloomington-Normal. The big omissions were Monster's Ball, with its nomination for Best Actress (Halle Berry), and Iris, with its nominations for Best Actress (Judi Dench), Supporting Actress (Kate Winslet) and Supporting Actor (Jim Broadbent). Following tomorrow's arrival of \"Monster's Ball\" to the University Cinemas in Normal, that leaves only \"Iris\" among the missing ... not a bad track record compared to some years hereabouts.

MOVIES / Madcap Mel / Nobody enjoys a good joke more than Gibson, but whenit comes to discussing his new film, he plays it straight
2002
[MEL Gibson] plays [Harold G. Moore], a Lt. Col. at the time and a devoutly Catholic father of five (Gibson, also Catholic, has seven children with his wife of 20 years, Robyn) who leads the first major battle of the Vietnam conflict. Barry Pepper is war photographer-turned-combatant [Joseph L. Galloway], Sam Elliott is Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley and Gregg Kinnear is helicopter pilot Bruce Crandall. All the real-life characters contributed to the research on the film - most impressively Moore, Gibson says. \"It wasn't political, not for these guys,\" says Gibson, who along with the other cast members underwent Ranger training at Fort Benning, Ga. \"Gen. Moore will be the first to tell you that, and he's the vanguard, he's the vigilant keeper of the light of freedom. He'd be the first to say we weren't over there for apple pie or Mom or Lyndon Johnson's piles or ideals or the flag or anything else. Primarily, when we're there in the maelstrom, we're sort of fighting for each other. That's what it boils down to. That message is hard and clear in the film.\" Gibson says \"we\" as if he were still inhabiting Moore's character, and it's the kind of thing that might get him in trouble: A few years ago, after Gibson had made the Scottish independence epic \"Braveheart\" and portrayed the British somewhat harshly in \"The Patriot,\" at least one London tabloid writer had a near-nervous breakdown in print, accusing Gibson of utter hypocrisy. Born in Peekskill, N.Y., in 1956, Gibson relocated to Australia in 1968 (his father won the moving money on \"Jeopardy!\"), ostensibly to avoid the draft.

Faking history
2002
Now We Were Soldiers is about to be released, written and directed by [Randall Wallace], and starring, as the brave military commander battling incredible odds, none other than [Mel Gibson]. The Braveheart team is reunited on a film that seeks to do for Vietnam what the earlier film did for Scotland. Ironically, [Harold G Moore]'s men were the Seventh Cavalry, the regiment Custer commanded at Little Big Horn, with helicopters now instead of horses. Ia Drang would not be another Little Big Horn however, but rather an American Rourke's Drift. And yet the name Ia Drang means nothing to the American public, says Wallace. Ia Drang marked the beginning of a new chapter in warfare, with helicopters ferrying troops to battle. There are obvious similarities with Black Hawk Down, though it is set in the more emotionally neutral territory of Somalia in 1993. We Were Soldiers, with its focus on Ia Drang and the families back home, is a superior film, though it may prove too bloody for some, while its values may be too clean-cut for others. But then Wallace wants to change attitudes. He is not pretending war is fun, simply that not everyone who wore a US uniform in Vietnam was a mindless thug.

Baltimore mayor plays hardball after being stymied on comptroller vote
1994
The mayor's campaign had invited council members and others to be his guests at the schmooze event of the summer's political season in Somerset County, all expenses paid, including bus transportation to and from there. But, after the council stalemate Friday -- when members failed to select a successor to indicted former Comptroller Jacqueline F. McLean after three attempts -- those members not voting for the mayor's selection, Councilwoman Iris G. Reeves, were dis-invited for crabs. Mr. [D'Adamo], who historically has supported the mayor's efforts, seemed hurt by the dis-invitation, saying he thought Mr. [Kurt L. Schmoke] understood the reason for his abstaining from the vote, based on Friday's conversation. Mr. D'Adamo said he has telephoned the mayor's office six times and Mr. [Larry S. Gibson]'s office four times since Monday, but has yet to get a call back. Finally, he got hold of Housing Commissioner Daniel P. Henson III, a mayoral political operative. \"He said, `Nick, we're going to start playing hardball. It's the principle: You were not there to help the mayor,' \" the councilman recalled. \"If Henson and Gibson want a puppet, I'll go to Kmart and buy them a puppet.\"
