OBITUARIES / E. Gierek, Former Polish Communist Leader
PAP news agency quoted Gierek's son Adam as saying the former communist leader, who tried to introduce some Western-style reforms in the 1970s but left Poland deep in debt, had died in the southern town of Cieszyn of a mining-related lung ailment. Gierek, who had worked as a youth in collieries in France and Belgium, became the first secretary of Poland's ruling Communist Party in 1970 after his predecessor, Wladyslaw Gomulka, was forced to step down after violent food price riots in which more than 40 workers were shot dead. \"It was under Gierek that the end of the Stalin style of governing really took place,\" said Janusz Rolicki, a communist-era journalist who wrote a book on Gierek.

Hostetler, both of South Bend; a son, Gary L. of South Bend; two stepdaughters, Laura L. Smith of South Bend and Kathy F. Levi of Granger; a stepson, Steven W. Pfettscher of Fort Collins, Colo.; two sisters, Susan White of Union, N.C., and Nancy Bartlett of Fort Wayne.; and a brother, Paul F. of Marietta, Ga. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, where friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. SOUTH BEND - [Willard A. Kelsey], 77, of Kissimmee, Fla., formerly of South Bend, died Tuesday in Osceola Regional Medical Center, Kissimmee of natural causes. Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen M. Porter of South Bend and Patricia J. Cooper of Kissimmee; two sons, Robert A. of Indianapolis and William M. of Glendale, Ariz.; one sister, Louise Dilts of South Bend; and a brother, Harry R. Kelsey of Temple, Texas. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Calvary Baptist Church. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. MISHAWAKA - [Wayne N. Middleton], 67, of West Third Street, died Tuesday in his home of natural causes. Survivors include three daughters, Sarah Echvarria and Sandy Middleton-Nix, both of Mishawaka, and Amy Robinson of Greenville, Mich.; three sons, Wayne and [Steve Gierek], both of Mishawaka, and Allen of Grant, Mich.; a sister, Shirley Loffler of Cadillac, Mich.; and two brothers, Dennis and Terry, both of South Bend. There will be no services or visitation. Bubb Funeral Chapel North is handling arrangements.
