“Because of Your Beard I Can Talk to You”: Rabbi Froman as Crisis Mediator between Israelis and Palestinians
2023
The subject of this essay is the role Rabbi Menachem Froman played as a mediator in crises between Israelis and Palestinians against the background of his interreligious vision of peace and attempts to implement it. Rabbi Froman was very active in this matter and initiated various schemes to promote reconciliation between the Israelis and Palestinians, both in his discussions with religious leaders of the two peoples as well as with politicians in Israel and around the world. The network of contacts and the open discourse that the rabbi developed in order to promote his vision enabled him to serve as a mediator during numerous crises that arose in the Middle East, in general, and Israel in particular. This essay sheds light on Rabbi Froman’s attempts at mediation throughout the years, including the outline of a solution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict he crafted with the other side. This essay is primarily based on archival materials and newspaper articles about the rabbi that were revealed after his death in 2013. The essay also chronologizes Rabbi Froman’s attempts to serve as mediator for the Israeli and Palestinian leadership and the “jihad for peace” he advocated.

This article explores whether national political agendas influenced the content of domestic and foreign television news media coverage of the 2011 Israel–Hamas Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange deal. The deal, which released Israeli soldier Shalit in exchange for 1,027 prisoners, is the largest prisoner exchange agreement in Israeli history for a single live soldier, but the third largest prisoner exchange agreement as a whole. A quantitative content analysis was conducted on 2,162 news reports from five international and national news networks – BBC, CNN, Fox and Israel's Channels 1 and 2. The findings suggest important differences in the way foreign and national news networks cover controversial political events. Findings reveal that Israeli networks strongly aligned themselves with the government's position, while the BBC provided the most balanced coverage. Prominent differences were found between the two US channels – CNN and Fox News. This work builds on a growing body of research on media framing of political events.

Hamas and Civil Society in Gaza
2013,2011,2014
Many in the United States and Israel believe that Hamas is nothing but a terrorist organization, and that its social sector serves merely to recruit new supporters for its violent agenda. Based on Sara Roy's extensive fieldwork in the Gaza Strip and West Bank during the critical period of the Oslo peace process, Hamas and Civil Society in Gaza shows how the social service activities sponsored by the Islamist group emphasized not political violence but rather community development and civic restoration.
Israeli soldier held captive for 1,941 days tells his story
2012
The former hostage [Gilad Shalit] has spoken to Israeli television for the first time since his release from Hamas captivity a year ago, describing how he and his Islamist captors shared brief moments of companionship through their passion for sport. Snatched at the age of 19 from an Israeli tank idling on the Gaza border, Corporal Shalit was whisked off into to captivity deep inside the coastal enclave, with only occasional indications that he was still alive released to his family and the Israeli government in the next five years. The first account of Mr Shalit's time in captivity has been keenly awaited in Israel, where the soldier's fate transfixed the nation for more than five years. His family's encampment outside the Prime Minister's residence was a constant reminder of his plight, and his face became one of the most recognisable in Israel.

Former Israeli soldier gives details of captivity in Gaza
2012
Mr. [Gilad Shalit] said that during his captivity, he had tried to focus on the good things, small as they were: \"Whatever I was allowed -- television, radio, reasonable food, the fact that they did not abuse me too much.\" He said he tried to maintain a regular schedule and to keep active. \"I would get up at about the same time and go to sleep at the same time,\" he said. \"I would do the same things almost every day. From the start, I followed the dates. There wasn't a moment that I didn't know what day it was.\" He said that he had begun to understand a little Arabic and had built a kind of rapport with his guards over a shared enthusiasm for sports. \"There were moments when a kind of emotion would arise, a kind of laughter,\" he said, \"when we watched a good game on television or a movie.\" He would also play chess and dominoes with his captors, he said, saying that those activities had helped him \"stay sane.\"

NO ONE WORTH 1,027 OTHERS, ESPECIALLY IF THEY'RE KILLERS READER'S VIEW
2011
I don't understand one Israeli being worth more than 1,027 individuals, who, by the letter writer's definition, are terrorists. Nor do I understand the arrogance of making judgments on whom should or should not have \"a peaceful day.\" As a child growing up in a Protestant Christian family, I was taught that the Lord said, \"Vengeance is mine. I will repay.\" Apparently, the letter writer feels willing and able to take over that divine function and the Lord can now close the Vengeance Dispensing Department.

REASON TO CELEBRATE BOCA RATON TEMPLE CELEBRATES ISRAELI SOLDIER'S HOMECOMING
by
McManus, Shani

Shalit, Gilad
2011
\"[[Gilad Shalit]] very much embodies the nobility of Jewish spirit and the sanctity and affirmation of life,\" said Rabbi Ruvi New, of Chabad of East Boca Raton. \"I think he's been the adopted son of the Jewish people for the last five years. We prayed for his release. It has touched Jews all over the world in a very personal way.\" \"Before I left Israel, I went with a friend to the Shalit protest tent in Jerusalem and met with Noam, Gilad's father,\" [Chen Amir] said. \"We didn't really know what to say. 'We support you. We are with you.' Noam nodded his head and thanked us for coming, for sitting with him, for not forgetting Gilad.\"

DEBATES HAVE BEEN SHAMEFUL
2011
Today we learned of the release of [Gilad Shalit], the Israeli soldier who was captured by Hamas nearly six years ago. The 'even' exchange from the Israeli side was approximately 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. Regardless of the personal opinions individuals hold of the Israeli/Palestinian issue, there is one thing that cannot be denied: the Jewish people hold one singular life so valuable as to jeopardize its safety as a nation to return him to his country and his family. The scriptures state, \"To save one life is as though you have saved the world.\" How wonderful it would be if the citizens of every country felt the same way. Credit: [Peggy C.
