Using chatbots to support student goal setting and social presence in fully online activities: learner engagement and perceptions
Although fully online learning is now the ‘new normal’ in many parts of the world, its implementation is often beset by challenges such as the lack of student self-regulation, and the sense of isolation. In this paper, we explored the use of chatbots to support student goal setting (Study 1) and social presence (Study 2) in online activities. In Study 1, participants in a fully online course were invited to complete a goal setting activity prior to attending class via a goal-setting chatbot. The chatbot engaged participants with five questions developed based on the SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely) goal setting framework. In Study 2, English-as-Foreign-Language participants in a fully online course were tasked to complete listening practices. The learning buddy chatbot was designed based on the social presence framework (interpersonal communication, open communication, cohesive communication) to guide students through listening exercises. In both Study 1 and 2, we evaluated participants’ behavioral engagement by measuring their conversation records with the chatbots, as well as participants’ perceived usefulness and ease of use of the chatbots. We also gathered in-depth interview data concerning the participants’ perceptions of interacting with the chatbots. Overall, our findings found positive learner experiences with both chatbots with regard to the chatbots’ perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. We also provided suggestions for instructors to apply chatbots in teaching and learning.
Self-goal setting as a way to career sustainability: exploring the roles of career crafting and perceived organizational goal clarity
PurposeAs an increasingly important variable in the career field, career sustainability has received particular attention, yet few empirical studies have been conducted to examine its antecedents. The authors propose a moderated mediation model based on the goal-setting theory and the wise proactivity perspective for exploring when and how self-goal setting can influence career sustainability.Design/methodology/approachThe authors use a time-lagged design and collect three waves of data from 1,260 teachers in basic education schools in China. The authors test the proposed hypotheses with SPSS 26.0 and Mplus 8.3.FindingsThe results show that self-goal setting positively relates to career sustainability and that career crafting plays a mediating role in this relationship. This relationship is strengthened when perceived organizational goal clarity is high.Originality/valueThe authors extend the application scenarios of the goal-setting theory to the field of career research and find out that self-goal setting is also a self-initiated and wise antecedent of career sustainability. From a wise proactivity perspective, the authors examine the mediating mechanism of career crafting to make positive career outcomes. Furthermore, the authors consider the impact of perceived organizational goal clarity as a boundary condition and broaden the understanding of “when to wise proactivity” from the goal-setting theory.
Longitudinal Process of Setting and Achieving Activity- and Participation-Level Goals in Home Rehabilitation in Japan: A Qualitative Study Using Trajectory Equifinality Modeling
This study aimed to clarify the longitudinal goal negotiation and collaboration process of achieving activity- and participation-level goals. We conducted a qualitative study using the trajectory equifinality model. Nine occupational therapists with experience in setting and achieving activity- and participation-level goals were recruited and interviewed about their clients. We identified two phases and four pathways in the setting and attainment process for activity- and participation-level goals. Throughout the longitudinal goal-setting process, when the occupational therapist and client had difficulty discussing activity- and participation-level goals, the therapist respected the client’s expectations, explained the purpose of occupational therapy in detail, and conducted individual face-to-face interviews. When it was difficult to provide work-based interventions, the occupational therapist made flexible use of functional training, elemental movement training, occupation-based practice, and environmental modifications. The results of this study may assist in supporting clients to improve their activity and participation in home rehabilitation.
A three‐goal model for patients with multimorbidity: A qualitative approach
Background To meet the challenge of multimorbidity in decision making, a switch from a disease‐oriented to a goal‐oriented approach could be beneficial for patients and clinicians. More insight about the concept and the implementation of this approach in clinical practice is needed. Objective This study aimed to develop conceptual descriptions of goal‐oriented care by examining the perspectives of general practitioners (GPs) and clinical geriatricians (CGs), and how the concept relates to collaborative communication and shared decision making with elderly patients with multimorbidity. Method Qualitative interviews with GPs and CGs were conducted and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results Clinicians distinguished disease‐ or symptom‐specific goals, functional goals and a new type of goals, which we labelled as fundamental goals. “Fundamental goals” are goals specifying patient's priorities in life, related to their values and core relationships. These fundamental goals can be considered implicitly or explicitly in decision making or can be ignored. Reasons to explicate goals are the potential mismatch between medical standards and patient preferences and the need to know individual patient values in case of multimorbidity, including the management in acute situations. Conclusion Based on the perspectives of clinicians, we expanded the concept of goal‐oriented care by identifying a three‐level goal hierarchy. This model could facilitate collaborative goal‐setting for patients with multiple long‐term conditions in clinical practice. Future research is needed to refine and validate this model and to provide specific guidance for medical training and practice.
Corporate Environmental Strategy and Voluntary Environmental Behavior—Mediating Effect of Psychological Green Climate
Given the growing intent to prevent decay in environmental management, the present study seeks to unearth the impact of corporate environmental strategy on employees’ voluntary environmental behavior by regulating or facilitating their perceived psychological green climate. Research problems and research questions are built on the essence of multiple theories—goal-setting theory, social identity theory, and social learning theory for grounding the research model. A total of 294 replies were collected through a self-administered survey from diverse industrial panoramas. We used structural equation modeling (SEM) analytics via AMOS-version 20.0 for measuring the hypothesized results. The study revealed that the corporate environmental strategy is displaying an insignificant direct influence on voluntary environmental behavior. However, the corporate environmental strategy indirectly influences, via the mediation effect, voluntary environmental behavior of employees through their psychological green climate perception. Directions for future research are recommended based on insights from the implications and limitations of the study.
