Isotope values of the bioavailable strontium in inland southwestern Sweden—A baseline for mobility studies
The inland area of southwestern Sweden is well known for its well-preserved archaeological animal and human remains dating back to the Mesolithic and Neolithic (10000-4000 and 4000-1700 BC). They allow application of multiple bioarchaeological methods, giving insights into various and complementary aspects of prehistoric human life, as well as economic and social structures. One important aspect concerns human mobility and its relation to social networks and to circulation of objects. Here, strontium isotope analysis plays a crucial role. The present study aims to construct a strontium isotope baseline of southwestern Sweden with considerably greater coverage and higher resolution than previously published data. As the region has been affected by glacial events, the relation between bedrock geology and isotope signals of the bioavailable strontium in such areas is given special attention. We determined strontium isotope ratios for 61 water and five archaeological animal samples, and combined the data with previous measurements of two water and 21 non-domestic faunal samples. The results reveal a complex pattern. Several areas with distinct baseline ranges can be distinguished, although with overlaps between some of them. Overall, the bioavailable strontium isotope signals mirror the basement geology of the region. The highest ratios occur in the geologically oldest eastern parts of the Precambrian terrain, while lower ratios are found in the western part, and the lowest ratios occur in the youngest Paleozoic areas. At the same time, there are minor deviations compared to the underlying bedrock, due to glacial transport, overlying sediments, and local intrusions of younger rocks. The background data set now available allows for more nuanced and detailed interpretations of human and animal mobility in the region, in particular by identification of subregions with differing strontium isotope ratios within the Precambrian province. Also, we can now identify long distance mobility with greater confidence.
Remoteness, islands and islandness
Through an explorative overview of a number of approaches to what remoteness is, in terms of language, discourse, and fantasy, how it is established spatially and temporally by movements and perspectives, by how connections are set up, and by how boundaries are drawn and crossed, this paper argues that remoteness is a) produced rather than discovered; b) an asymmetric relation between two parties from which emanates certain features, practices, and affective modes; c) a category to think with rather than an object for such thinking; d) a device that frames and structures the positioning and experiencing of time and place; and e) a part of the logic that organises the world in terms of power and control. Of longstanding concern in island studies is what constitutes ‘the island’. Much of the discussion is built on an undertheorised and broadly accepted dichotomisation between ‘literal’ and ‘metaphorical’ understandings of islands. What the overview suggests is a third position: ‘the island’ as an intensively multirelational phenomenon constituted by the constant sliding between islands as physical places and all the figures of thought attached to such places.
Producing landscapes of environmental justice: exploitation of woodlands and wetlands and deep historical geographies of justice on Gotland
ContextThe importance of justice is increasingly recognized in environmental policy making. Research on environmental justice offers an important perspective on landscape transformations, both natural and social.ObjectivesThis paper asks how current work on environmental justice might contribute to the development of socio-environmental knowledge of the biophysical landscape. The paper explores the relations between environmental justice thinking and the production of a distinctively capitalist landscape.MethodsThe paper builds on a review of environmental justice and landscape literature and, for the empirical part, on archival studies and secondary sources.ResultsThe paper shows that there remains a disjunction between landscape studies and the environmental justice literature. It provides a theoretically informed approach of bringing together environmental justice scholarship with the transformations of a contested and distinctively capitalist landscape. By studying changes in woodlands and wetlands on the island of Gotland, Sweden, it uncovers a process of the production of landscape that elicits “deep” historical geographies of environmental justice. The massive exploitation of wetlands and forests shows how an approach encompassing environmental justice in conjunction with forms of resource exploitation and conservation can help grasp changes in the landscape.
Sustainability Assessment of Energy System Transition Scenarios in Gotland: Integrating Techno-Economic Modeling with Environmental and Social Perspectives
Gotland has been designated by the Swedish government as a pilot region for the transition to a sustainable, fossil-free energy system by 2030. This transformation emphasizes local renewable energy production and system independence. Within this context, this study investigates the role of industrial waste heat as a resource to improve energy efficiency and support sector integration between electricity, heating, and industry. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining techno-economic energy system modeling, life cycle assessment, spatial GIS data, and stakeholder input. The study develops and analyzes future carbon-neutral energy scenarios for Gotland’s energy system. Industrial waste heat can significantly reduce primary energy demand, particularly in scenarios with expanded industry, carbon capture, and increased sector integration—such as through district heating. In such cases, up to 3000–4000 GWh/year of low-temperature industrial residual heat becomes available, offering substantial potential to improve overall energy efficiency. The scenarios highlight synergies and trade-offs across environmental, economic, and social dimensions, emphasizing the importance of coordinated planning. Scenarios with offshore wind enable energy exports and industrial growth but raise challenges related to emissions and public acceptance, while scenarios without cement production reduce environmental impact but weaken local economic resilience. Limitations of the study include the exclusion of global supply chain impacts and assumptions about future technological costs. The study underscores the need for integrated planning, regulatory innovation, and stakeholder collaboration to ensure a just and resilient transition for Gotland.
Paternal Perinatal Depression Assessed by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the Gotland Male Depression Scale: Prevalence and Possible Risk Factors
Several studies have used the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), developed to screen new mothers, also for new fathers. This study aimed to further contribute to this knowledge by comparing assessment of possible depression in fathers and associated demographic factors by the EPDS and the Gotland Male Depression Scale (GMDS), developed for “male” depression screening. The study compared EPDS score ≥10 and ≥12, corresponding to minor and major depression, respectively, in relation to GMDS score ≥13. At 3–6 months after child birth, a questionnaire was sent to 8,011 fathers of whom 3,656 (46%) responded. The detection of possibly depressed fathers by EPDS was 8.1% at score ≥12, comparable to the 8.6% detected by the GMDS. At score ≥10, the proportion detected by EPDS increased to 13.3%. Associations with possible risk factors were analyzed for fathers detected by one or both scales. A low income was associated with depression in all groups. Fathers detected by EPDS alone were at higher risk if they had three or more children, or lower education. Fathers detected by EPDS alone at score ≥10, or by both scales at EPDS score ≥12, more often were born in a foreign country. Seemingly, the EPDS and the GMDS are associated with different demographic risk factors. The EPDS score appears critical since 5% of possibly depressed fathers are excluded at EPDS cutoff 12. These results suggest that neither scale alone is sufficient for depression screening in new fathers, and that the decision of EPDS cutoff is crucial.
Submersed Aquatic Vegetation Enhances Density and Diversity of Epifaunal Invertebrates Compared to Filamentous Mats in the Central Baltic Sea
Submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) provides essential habitat and food to numerous coastal invertebrate species. In the eutrophic Baltic Sea, fast‐growing drifting algae form extensive mats that can negatively impact SAV. However, these mats also offer additional habitat and food to epifauna. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of SAV and filamentous mats on epifaunal communities in shallow soft‐bottom habitats around Gotland, Sweden, in the central Baltic Sea. We used generalised linear models (GLMs) to evaluate the influence of SAV vertical structure, biomass and macrophyte species richness (including macroalgae) and filamentous mat biomass on epifaunal community properties as well as on those of key grazer species. Diversity, vertical structure and biomass of SAV were positively associated with higher total epifaunal abundance and greater abundance gastropod grazers. In contrast, filamentous mats only increased gastropod abundance and biomass. In addition to introducing a rapid tool for quantifying vegetation structural complexity, this study highlights the selective effects of different habitat types on invertebrate communities in a relatively understudied region of the Baltic Sea. As warming temperatures and eutrophication promote filamentous mat growth, reducing nutrient pollution and protecting SAV will be crucial for sustaining abundant and diverse epifaunal communities. This study evaluates the relative importance of Submersed Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) and filamentous mats in shaping epifaunal invertebrate communities in the central Baltic Sea. Our results showed that diversity, vertical structure, and biomass of SAV were all positively associated with higher total epifaunal abundance and greater abundance of crustacean and gastropod grazers, while filamentous mats only positively influenced gastropods. Our results highlight the importance of managing for diverse, abundant, and complex SAV assemblages.
Terrestrial Laser Scanning for the Detection of Coastal Changes along Rauk Coasts of Gotland, Baltic Sea
Clusters of sea stacks, called rauks, are unique rocky landforms characteristic of Baltic Sea coasts. These limestone stacks raise interest due to their spectacular morphology and yet unexplained origin. This study presents the results of seasonal observations (2019–2020) of rauk coast changes carried out in one of the key rauk fields on Fårö Island, Sweden. The landforms developing within three test sites were examined. At Langhammars ‘classic’ field of rauks built from homogeneous limestone (1) and a shore platform devoid of rauks, underlain clearly separate limestone slabs were explored (2); and at Gamla Hamn, the analysis covered a non-typical rauk field built of densely laminated limestone (3). We applied terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) to obtain data needed in morphometric analyses and rauk surface change monitoring. We identified and determined contemporary erosional rates and dominant processes responsible for eroding and downwearing of rauk coasts. The observed changes were strongly associated with differences in local lithological and structural conditions—from a nearly complete absence within massive limestone rauks notches, to clear signs of erosion within limestone slabs eroded by waves, almost 1 m2 in size.
Cost–benefit analysis of beach-cast harvest
Harvesting beach-cast can help mitigate marine eutrophication by closing land-marine nutrient loops and provide a blue biomass raw material for the bioeconomy. Cost–benefit analysis was applied to harvest activities during 2009–2018 on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, highlighting benefits such as nutrient removal from the marine system and improved recreational opportunities as well as costs of using inputs necessary for harvest. The results indicate that the activities entailed a net gain to society, lending substance to continued funding for harvests on Gotland and assessments of upscaling of harvest activities to other areas in Sweden and elsewhere. The lessons learnt from the considerable harvest experience on Gotland should be utilized for developing concrete guidelines for carrying out sustainable harvest practice, paying due attention to local conditions but also to what can be generalized to a wider national and international context.
Amphibian Occurrence Is Influenced by Current and Historic Landscape Characteristics
Human-induced habitat loss and degradation are major threats to wetland species as reflected in the fact that wetlands have declined by more than 50% in Europe and North America during the last century. Both current and historic land-use patterns are likely to be significant determinants of wetland species' distributions; however their relative importance is often unknown. We studied the importance of local (study pond) and landscape (current and 18th-century landscape) characteristics in explaining the occurrence and species richness of amphibians (Rana arvalis, Bufo bufo, and Triturus vulgaris) on the Swedish island of Gotland, where more than 40% of wetlands have been lost since the 18th century. Current local habitat characteristics were the strongest determinants of occurrence for all study species. Additionally, species occurrence was related to current and historic landscape characteristics, which generally explained equal amounts of the variation in species-occurrence data. The proportions of both current and historic arable land were negative determinants of amphibian occurrence and species richness, indicating that agricultural land use may have an overall negative impact on amphibians, and that amphibians may occur less frequently in areas with a long agricultural history. Likewise, historic forest area was positively related to B. bufo occurrence and species richness, whereas current forests had no significant effects, suggesting that there may be a lag in the response of amphibians to agriculture-mediated habitat loss. Our results suggest that historic land-use patterns may influence current amphibian populations and that inclusion of historic land-use information could be a valuable tool in future studies on amphibian-habitat relations.
“Authenticity” as a Pathway to Sustainable Cultural Tourism? The Cases of Gotland and Rapa Nui
In this paper, two World Heritage island destinations are compared, Gotland in the Baltic and Rapa Nui in the Pacific. Both islands deal with a growing number of tourists, which asks for rethinking of tourism development. As cultural heritage plays a major role in tourism for both destinations, it is especially important to look into sustainable cultural tourism development from the perspective of authenticity. The paper is based on a variety of materials and takes an innovative approach to methods through a student–staff collaboration. The data show that social acceptance of tourism by local communities on both islands could be achieved through the creation of authentic experiences. Furthermore, data show that it is rather potent to engage both locals and tourists in modernized authentic experiences. However, this can only be done if locals are empowered and are genuinely allowed to steer the development of tourism.
