Design thinking for visual communication
\"Now in its second edition, the highly popular Design Thinking for Visual Communication identifies methods and thought processes used by designers in order to start the process that eventually leads to a finished piece of work. Step-by-step guidance for each part of the process is highlighted by real-life case studies, enabling the student to see teaching in practice. This focus on ideas and methods eschews an abstract, academic approach in favour of a useable approach to design as a problem-solving activity. The new edition now includes contributions from a broader international range of design practices and adds depth to existing case studies by looking in greater detail at some of the processes used\"--Amazon.Com.
Experiential Graphic Design: Informing, Inspiring, and Integrating People in Physical Spaces—A Review
Experiential graphic design (XGD) has increased in importance over the past decade, with technological advances and a focus on user engagement. While the acronym XGD has been used for years, many practitioners prefer the older acronym, EGD, which stands for environmental graphic design. XGD, however, more accurately reflects the field’s scope, which combines multiple design disciplines to enhance user experience through the visual interpretation of ideas in physical spaces. The objective of this study was to perform an extensive bibliometric analysis of the existing literature on XGD topics across a wide range of spatial contexts, with particular emphasis on open public spaces and enclosed architectural environments, structured around four research questions related to the following: (1) foundational studies and the evolution of the literature, (2) the main keywords and research trends, (3) XGD application environments, and (4) XGD’s key roles. The methodology involved analyzing 245 records on the XGD topic from the Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases, following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA). Based on a comprehensive review of the literature, this study offers a general overview of XGD, exploring its applications across different built environments. In addition, it pairs theoretical concepts with practical examples to demonstrate XGD’s key roles, highlighting current trends, future developments, and the need to establish educational frameworks in the XGD field.

The elements of graphic design : space, unity, page architecture, and type
\"This very popular design book has been wholly revised and expanded to feature a new dimension of inspiring and counterintuitive ideas to thinking about graphic design relationships. The Elements of Graphic Design, Second Edition is now in full color in a larger, 8 x 10-inch trim size, and contains 40 percent more content and over 750 images to enhance and better clarify the concepts in this thought-provoking resource. The second edition also includes a new section on Web design; new discussions of modularity, framing, motion and time, rules of randomness, and numerous quotes supported by images and biographies. This pioneering work provides designers, art directors, and students--regardless of experience--with a unique approach to successful design. Veteran designer and educator Alex. W. White has assembled a wealth of information and examples in his exploration of what makes visual design stunning and easy to read. Readers will discover White's four elements of graphic design, including how to: define and reveal dominant images, words, and concepts; use scale, color, and position to guide the viewer through levels of importance; employ white space as a significant component of design and not merely as background; and use display and text type for maximum comprehension and value to the reader. Offering a new way to think about and use the four design elements, this book is certain to inspire better design\"-- Provided by publisher.
Sustainable Design Factors and Solutions Analysis and Assessment for the Graphic Design Industry: A Hybrid Fuzzy AHP–Fuzzy MARCOS Approach
Within the realm of graphic design sustainability, selecting appropriate solutions has become a crucial strategic decision for organizations aiming to optimize their operations. This paper presents a novel hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach, integrating a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) and fuzzy measurement alternatives and ranking according to compromise solution (FMARCOS). Evaluation criteria for graphic design sustainability are determined through consultation with experts, with their judgments expressed using linguistic terms based on fuzzy numbers. Criteria weights are calculated using FAHP, and the ranking and selection of the optimal potential solution are determined using FMARCOS. Subsequently, sensitivity analysis of the criteria weights is conducted to validate the results. Findings indicate that the integrated FAHP and FMARCOS model provides a robust and adaptable assessment framework for graphic design sustainability, enabling companies to navigate complexities strategically and effectively. The key contribution of this research is its emphasis on a systematic and objective model, offering practical insights relevant to the industry. It also serves as a valuable benchmark for future research in similar fields.
The art of graphic design
Bradbury Thompson (1911-1995) remains one of the most admired and influential graphic designers of the twentieth century, having trained a generation of design students while on the faculty of the Yale School of Art for more than thirty years. The art director of Mademoiselle and design director of Art News and Art News Annual in the decades after World War II, Thompson was also a distinguished designer of limited-edition books, postage stamps, rationalized alphabets, corporate identification programs, trademarks, and sacred works (most notably the Washburn College Bible). Thompson also designed more than sixty issues of Westvaco Inspirations, a magazine that was published by the Westvaco Corporation and distributed to thousands of printers, designers, and teachers to show the range and versatility of printing papers. Thompson was especially revered for his ability to adapt classic typography for the modern world.Bradbury Thompson: The Art of Graphic Design is a landmark in the history of fine bookmaking. First published by Yale University Press in 1988 and designed by Thompson himself, it was praised by the New York Times as a book in which \"art and design are gloriously and daringly mixed.\" Original texts by the author and other notable designers, critics, and art historians, including J. Carter Brown, Alvin Eisenman, and Steven Heller, explore Thompson's methods and design philosophy, and a newly commissioned afterword by Jessica Helfand attests to the enduring importance of his work.
The effectiveness of Canned Coffee packaging's graphic design elements in consumers' decision-making process
Studies recently focused on the important roles of graphic design elements in drawing consumers’ attention. The present study focuses on finding out the effectiveness of graphic design elements and colors of canned coffee packaging in consumers' decision-making process. This study was performed in two stages. The first stage included making graphic design elements: image, shape, and typography. In the second stage, the values were modified to see which color was the most attractive to the consumer by distributing questionnaires to 135 respondents. The study demonstrates the importance of packaging visuals, implying the need for attractive graphic design elements. Regarding the image, respondents preferred the photograph over the illustration. Meanwhile, regarding shape, respondents preferred fluid rather than pattern, and regarding typography, they preferred display over text. To conclude, respondents preferred light-colored photography, pattern and display. This result could be used as a reference in designing beverage packaging.
