The influence of Chinese typography on information dissemination in graphic design: based on eye-tracking data
The arrangement of Chinese characters has a significant impact on the visual effect and information dissemination in graphic design. In traditional Chinese layout, vertical arrangement of characters is predominant, but in recent times, there has been a gradual transition towards horizontal arrangement. To compare the influence of different character arrangement forms on visual meaning generation and information dissemination, This study employed an eye-tracking experiment to investigate two common Chinese character layouts in posters—horizontal and vertical, and collected data such as eye-tracking heatmap, pupil diameter and eye-tracking trajectory map. Based on objective eye-tracking data, combined with post-test interviews and questionnaire surveys, it was found that vertical character arrangement in Chinese typography is more effective in attracting visual attention and facilitating the expression and stimulating interest in viewing/reading under the premise of meeting formal requirements, which may provide guidance and inspiration for the practical application of Chinese characters in layout design, advertising design, packaging design, exhibition design, UI design, and other related fields.
Crowdsourcing with All-Pay Auctions: A Field Experiment on Taskcn
To explore the effects of different incentives on crowdsourcing participation and submission quality, we conduct a randomized field experiment on Taskcn, a large Chinese crowdsourcing site using mechanisms with features of an all-pay auction. In our study, we systematically vary the size of the reward as well as the presence of a soft reserve, or early high-quality submission. We find that a higher reward induces significantly more submissions and submissions of higher quality. In comparison, we find that high-quality users are significantly less likely to enter tasks where a high-quality solution has already been submitted, resulting in lower overall quality in subsequent submissions in such soft reserve treatments. Art and Ocean Objects of Early Modern Eurasia
During the early modern period, objects of maritime material culture were removed from their places of origin and traded, collected and displayed worldwide. Focusing on shells and pearls exchanged within local and global networks, this monograph compares and connects Asian, in particular Chinese, and European practices of oceanic exploitation in the framework of a transcultural history of art with an understanding of maritime material culture as gendered. Perceiving the ocean as mother of all things, as womb and birthplace, Chinese and European artists and collectors exoticized and eroticized shells' shapes and surfaces. Defining China and Europe as spaces entangled with South and Southeast Asian sites of knowledge production, source and supply between 1500 and 1700, the book understands oceanic goods and maritime networks as transcending and subverting territorial and topographical boundaries. It also links the study of globally connected port cities to local ecologies of oceanic exploitation and creative practices.
A Novel Method Based on GPU for Real-Time Anomaly Detection in Airborne Push-Broom Hyperspectral Sensors
The airborne hyperspectral remote sensing systems (AHRSSs) acquire images with high spectral resolution, high spatial resolution, and high temporal dimension. While the AHRSS captures more detailed information from the terrain objects, the computational complexity of data processing is greatly increased. As an important application technology in the hyperspectral domain, anomaly detection (AD) processing must be real-time and high-precision in many cases, such as post-disaster rescue, military battlefield search, and natural disaster detection. In this paper, the real-time AD technology for the push-broom AHRSS is studied, the mathematical model is established, and a novel implementation framework is proposed. Firstly, the optimized kernel minimum noise fraction (OP-KMNF) transformation is employed to extract informative and discriminative features between the background and anomalies. Secondly, the Nyström method is introduced to reduce the computational complexity of OP-KMNF transformation by decomposing and extrapolating the sub-kernel matrix to estimate the eigenvector of the entire kernel matrix. Thirdly, the extracted features are transferred to hard disks for data storage. Then, taking the extracted features as input data, the background separation model-based CEM anomaly detector (BSM-CEMAD) is imported to detect anomalies. Finally, graphics processing unit (GPU) parallel computing is utilized in the Nyström-based OP-KMNF (NOP-KMNF) transformation and the BSM-CEMAD to improve the execution efficiency, and the real-time AD for the push-broom AHRSS could be realized. To test the feasibility of the implementation framework proposed in this paper, the experiment is carried out with the Airborne Multi-Modular Imaging Spectrometer (AMMIS) developed by the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics as the data acquisition platform. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms many other state-of-the-art AD methods in anomalies detection and background suppression. Moreover, under the condition that the downlink data could retain most of the hyperspectral data information, the proposed method achieves real-time detection of pixel-level anomalies, with the initial delay not exceeding 1 s, the false alarm rate (FAR) less than 5%, and the true positive rate (TPR) close to 98%.
A Design Framework of Medical Wayfinding Signs for the Elderly: Based on the Situational Cognitive Commonness
Older people in China have a poor understanding of hospital signage. To address this problem, in this study, we combined the theories of situated cognition and cognitive commonness in order to introduce the three main factors that affect the generation of situational cognitive commonness: composition of the situation, familiarity, and concreteness. We used these theories to construct a methodological framework for the design of geriatric hospital wayfinding signs that were based on situational cognitive commonness. The design of nine healthcare signs for Chinese national standards were used as examples in the study. First, users who were familiar with medical scenarios were asked to draw concrete cognitive conception graphics for the purposes of individual wayfinding targets from both physical and social situations. Next, we coded and grouped the generated graphics based on their situational features in order to extract groups of representative common graphics. Finally, we reorganized the common graphics and developed concrete designs, which were tested by the judgment test. The wayfinding signs designed according to the methodological framework of this study effectively improved the understanding of hospital signage among older Chinese people. This study took geriatric hospital wayfinding signs as the examples to provide a feasible theoretical basis and research reference for symbol design.

Decentralization of Political Design in China
Political posters, banners, and similar objects are extremely common in China. This article uses political design from contemporary China, particularly emphasizing the government's Chinese Dream campaign, to analyze what at first appears to be a paradox. The subjects of the various campaigns and the language they use are mandated by the central government and promoted through central and local publicity departments. However, the graphic aspects of these campaigns, such as the choice of colours, images, layout, and typeface, are much less strictly controlled, and are decided by local governments or authorities. This makes political design in China decentralized. Decentralized design is inconsistent with the principles of global marketing and with the PRC's reliance on set forms of political discourse, both of which rely on the assumption that uniformity will lead to more effective communication of messages and persuasion of the public. Evidence from local design campaigns indeed shows that Chinese political posters are often designed hastily and without expertise, resulting in strange and unpersuasive images. Despite this, the article shows that decentralized design is not paradoxical. This is largely because the Chinese party-state uses propaganda as a method of \"signalling\" its overall power, more than as a tool of indoctrination or persuasion about particular topics. The central government's reliance on incentives and metrics to regulate local authorities means that the production of propaganda is also a way in which local governments can signal their loyalty to the Centre.
Gutenberg in Shanghai : Chinese print capitalism, 1876-1937
Relying on documents previously unavailable to both Western and Chinese researchers, this history demonstrates how Western technology and evolving traditional values resulted in the birth of a unique form of print capitalism that would have a far-reaching and irreversible influence on Chinese culture. In the mid-1910s, what historians call the Golden Age of Chinese Capitalism began, accompanied by a technological transformation that included the drastic expansion of China's Gutenberg revolution. This is a vital reevaluation of Chinese modernity that refutes views that China's technological development was slowed by culture or that Chinese modernity was mere cultural continuity.
Comparison of four algorithms on establishing continuous reference intervals for pediatric analytes with age-dependent trend
Background Continuous reference intervals (RIs) allow for more precise consideration of the dynamic changes of physiological development, which can provide new strategies for the presentation of laboratory test results. Our study aimed to establish continuous RIs using four different simulation methods so that the applicability of different methods could be further understood. Methods The data of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and serum creatinine (Cr) were obtained from the Pediatric Reference Interval in China study (PRINCE), in which healthy children aged 0–19 years were recruited. The improved non-parametric method, the radial smoothing method, the General Additive Model for Location Scale and Shape (GAMLSS), and Lambda-Median-Sigma (LMS) were used to develop continuous RIs. The accuracy and goodness of fit of the continuous RIs were evaluated based on the out of range (OOR) and Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) results. Results Samples from 11,517 and 11,544 participants were used to estimate the continuous RIs of ALP and Cr, respectively. Time frames were partitioned to fulfill the following two criteria: sample size = 120 in each subgroup and mean difference = 2 between adjacent time frames. Cubic spline or penalized spline was used for curve smoothing. The RIs estimated by the four methods approximately overlapped. However, more obvious edge effects were shown in the curves fit by the non-parametric methods than the semi-parametric method, which may be attributed to insufficient sample size. The OOR values of all four methods were smaller than 10%. Conclusions All four methods could be used to establish continuous RIs. GAMLSS and LMS are more reliable than the other two methods for dealing with edge effects.
