From cradle to stage : stories from the mothers who rocked and raised rock stars
Drawing on interviews with such women as Verna Griffin, Dr. Dre's mother; Marianne Stipe, Michael Stipe of REM's mother; Janis Winehouse, Amy Winehouse's mother; Hester Diamond, Mike D of The Beastie Boys' mother; and many more, the mother of Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl presents an exposمae of what it's like to be a rock 'n' roll mom.
SOUND CITY No Cert
IN TERMS of riffs that were heard around the world, few can compare with the one that detonates Nirvana's iconic Smells Like Teen Spirit. Whether, like me, you can still remember where you were when you first heard that instant classic's soul-stirring licks, or you're just a fan of quality tunes, it's almost guaranteed that Sound City, ex-Nirvana drummer David Grohl's fascinating new documentary, will rock your world.
This is a call : the life and times of Dave Grohl
The epic story of a singular career that includes Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, and Them Crooked Vultures. Based on ten years of original, exclusive interviews with the man himself and conversations with a legion of musical associates like Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, DC punk legend Ian MacKaye, and Nevermind producer Butch Vig, this is Grohl's story. He speaks candidly and honestly about Kurt Cobain, the arguments that almost tore Nirvana apart, the feuds that threatened to derail the Foo Fighters' global success, and the dark days that almost caused him to quit music for good.
Grohl grows another super group with Them Crooked Vultures
\"For 20 years, people have asked me what my dream band line-up is,\" [David Grohl] said in a recent interview. \"And now I can say that I'm in it!\" The 40-year-old formed the band by inviting [Josh Homme] and [John Paul Jones] to join him on a \"blind date\" at a medieval banquet, just to see how they all got along. They hit it off big time, and now the group have revealed they're already planning a follow-up release. \"We talk about making another record,\" he said. \"I don't know when we'll do it or where or how, but it's not something I would ever wanna stop doing, that's for sure.
Foo Fighters break music festival record
\"Becoming a father changes your outlook on every aspect of your life,\" he says. \"It really does change the way you look at things, and with me, it made me feel fearless - more alive. On the evidence of raucous live shows such as the one Foo Fighters put on at the recent Live Earth London gig, it would be wrong to say the band's sound has completely mellowed - though they have become more melodic. \"Album after album, we've tried to redesign what we do,\" [David Grohl] explains. \"Not reinvent, but just make it all a little prettier. We wanted to experiment and go deeper melodically.\" Grohl says it was after last year's acoustic tour - chronicled on live CD/DVD Skin and Bones - when he \"finally realised the melodic possibilities hidden in a lot of our songs.\"
Out this week
Foo Fighter David - what happened to the 'Dave'? - [DAVID GROHL] is the latest rocker seeking some kind of wacko credibility going into the film composition business. Those expecting some Foo business will be disappointed but Grohl reveals a half-decent eye for pastiche (check the surf guitar on Bill Hill Theme) but otherwise it's all very so what? Shame.
NIRVANA`S `NEVERMIND` UNCONVENTIONAL HEAVY METAL
The first track, Smells Like Teen Spirit, is the song that is responsible for breaking Nirvana into the mainstream. It received countless hours of MTV play. This song, which has an anti- establishment theme, has become an anthem of sorts for teen-agers. It defines Nirvana`s unique sound; that sound, combined with hypnotic lyrics, is what separates Nirvana from other metal groups.
Film & Music: Brief encounters: Internet killed the rock'n'roll star
Or perhaps it's born out of a slightly less malicious brand of wishful thinking on the part of a fan. A prematurely dead rock star is a perfect rock star: they don't become old and unattractive, they don't blot their copybook with middle-aged lapses of taste. There's always the chance that whoever killed off [Dave Grohl] was trying to preserve his career in aspic: maybe they thought the Foo Fighters' acoustic live album Skin and Bones represented the start of a long decline and made a desperate, futile attempt to arrest said decline. Then again, there's always the chance that whoever killed off Dave Grohl did it for want of something better to do. Perhaps the anonymous Grim Reaper of Wikipedia should get a life.
Star Wars fans, mark your calendars
The two-disc set for Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith will include a making-of documentary produced by Lucasfilm; featurettes on the movie's stunts and on Anakin Skywalker -- who transforms into galactic bad guy Darth Vader; and an Internet documentary series featuring 15 segments produced for the web. Love, the widow of Kurt Cobain, and [David Grohl], who played drums in Nirvana, have feuded before. Grohl and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic became mired in three years of litigation in a dispute over the timing of the famed grunge band's box set, With the Lights Out. They settled their legal issues in September 2002 and the CDs were released last year.
No love lost
Though some have labelled David Grohl of the Foo Fighters the \"nicest guy in rock,\" Courtney Love would beg to differ.
