Clara Romero de Nicola: Principal Cultural Promoter of the Guitar in Cuba

The Cuban school of classical guitar holds a distinguished place in the international guitar community. This article examines the pivotal role of Clara Romero de Nicola in shaping guitar technique and pedagogy in early twentieth-century Cuba and explores the enduring impact of her contributions on subsequent generations of Cuban classical guitarists. Through interviews with her students and family members, archival research, and the critical consideration of her life work through a gendered frame, this article places importance on the often unrecognized role of Romero de Nicola in developing and promoting the Cuban school of classical guitar. Resumen: La escuela cubana de guitarra clásica ocupa un lugar destacado en la comunidad guitarrística internacional. Este artículo examina el papel fundamental de Clara Romero de Nicola en la configuración de la técnica y pedagogía guitarrística en Cuba a principios del siglo XX, y explora la perdurable influencia de sus aportaciones en las generaciones posteriores de guitarristas clásicos cubanos. A través de entrevistas con sus alumnos y familiares, investigación archivística y una consideración crítica de su trayectoria desde una perspectiva de género, este artículo destaca el papel, a menudo no reconocido, de Romero de Nicola en el desarrollo y la promoción de la escuela cubana de guitarra clásica.
