DANCER FROM PANAMA WILL ENLIVEN CONCERT AT LINDENWOOD
According to her mother, Lindenwood University dance major Monica Guzman was doing pirouettes mentally before she could walk. Guzman, 19, grew up in Panama City, where she started taking dance classes at age 4. She is proficient in jazz, tap, gymnastics and ballet and has appeared in Panamanian television commercials. Guzman is one of 50 Panamanian students enrolled at Lindenwood and one of three dance majors from that Central American country. She will be one of 60 dancers in the Lindenwood University Showcase Dancers' winter concert this week. Guzman has choreographed a vibrant salsa number for 16 dancers. She described the salsa as similar to the tango but with more movement. Guzman's mother, Estela Guzman, works for Intermark Systems in Panama City, and her father, Alavoro Guzman, owns the Happy Tours Travel Agency. Her sister, Anna Maria, is a college student in Florida. Guzman described life in Panama City as one where extended families get together at least once a week. Menus consist of fresh vegetables, a meat and always rice and beans.
New legislation too broad for complex U.S. illegal immigrant morass
While the rally, which drew about 100,000 people, didn't exactly screech the economy to a halt a la \"A Day Without a Mexican,\" the bevy of Latino-owned businesses that voluntarily shut down for the day and the throngs of workers who risked their jobs to protest show how critically this issue strikes at the heart of a vast community. (To give a sense of how large the exodus was from this area, about nine busloads of people traveled from Elgin, another 100 people went from Carpentersville, and some 300 took Metra, according to Kristin Kumpf of the Illinois Coalition of Immigrants and Refugee Rights, one of the protest organizers. Aurora saw 40 busloads of people go). [Monica Guzman], who works for an Elgin chiropractor, also noted that barring illegal immigrants would threaten far more than illegal immigrants.
The first-day-of-school adventures at Grace Miller Elementary in La Verne
Wearing royal blue T-shirts with gold lettering declaring \"Be Connected. Be United. Be Awesome,\" PTA members didn't just focus on their own children, they served students, parents and teachers a \"welcome continental breakfast\" of milk, donut holes and - for adults only - coffee. \"We just want to show them our school spirit and get them going on a positive note,\" PTA member Shelly Vasquez said. \"The kids will see us all year because we do activities every month. There's back-to-school night this Thursday at 6 p.m. PTA monthly features also include walkathons, a fall festival, donuts with dads, muffins with moms, book fairs and things that let kids know we're connected to them.\" [Bonnie Crum], assisted by instructional aide Theresa Scull, also revised the version of the three Rs from the old-fashioned \"reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic\" to \"respectful, responsible and resourceful\" as her format for learning, character development and interaction with others.
