THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG GYMNASTS’ TRAINING AGE, BODY MASS INDEX, BALANCE CONTROL, AND GYMNASTICS PERFORMANCE
The aim of the study was the examination of the relationships among gymnasts’ training age, body mass index (BMI), balance control during the execution of handstand, standing scale forward, and stork standing in relevé position, and their performance in competition settings. Forty young competitive gymnasts (20 males; age: 12.20 ± 1.98 years, and 20 females; age: 12.33 ± 2.07 years, mean ± SD) participated in this study. A portable digital platform for posturography was used to measure maximal pressure, center of pressure (CoP) sway area, CoP linear distance displacement and CoP velocity. The resulting data were analyzed using an integrated software module (Foot Checker, version 4.0). The results confirm the reliability of the measurements. Strong positive correlations were found between gymnasts' performance in the gymnastics competition, and their training age and BMI, with relationships also identified between performance and variables related to balance control. Regression analysis revealed that gymnasts' training age, BMI, and balance control in performing the assessed gymnastics skills had predictive significance in determining their performance in the competition, taking into account differences between age groups. Despite the limitations of the study, the results represent a valuable contribution to the literature by expanding knowledge about predicting gymnastics performance in competition. Furthermore, the results provide evidence for the identification of talent in gymnasts, offer coaches insights to improve training efficiency, and provide recommendations for future research in this area. Namen raziskave je bil preučiti povezave med leti vadbe telovadcev, indeksom telesne mase (ITM), nadzorom ravnotežja med izvajanjem stoje na rokah, razovke stojno zanožno in stoji na eni nogi v vzponu ter njihovo uspešnost v tekmovalnih okoljih. V tej raziskavi je sodelovalo 40 mladih  telovadcev in telovadk (20 moških; starost: 12,20 ± 1,98 let in 20 žensk; starost: 12,33 ± 2,07 let, povprečje ± SD). Prenosna pritiskovna plošča je bila uporabljena za merjenje najvišjega tlaka, območja nihanja središča tlaka (CoP), premika premočrtne razdalje CoP in hitrosti CoP. Dobljene podatke smo razčlenili z vgrajenim programom (Foot Checker, različica 4.0). Rezultati potrjujejo zanesljivost meritev. Ugotovljene so bile močne pozitivne povezave med uspešnostjo telovadcev na tekmovanju ter njihovimi leti vadbe in ITM, pri čemer so bila ugotovljena tudi razmerja med uspešnostjo in spremenljivkami, povezanimi z nadzorom ravnotežja. Regresijska metoda je pokazala, da imajo leta vadbe, ITM in nadzor ravnotežja pri izvajanju telovadnih prvin napovedni pomen pri določanju njihove uspešnosti na tekmovanju, ob upoštevanju razlik med starostnimi skupinami. Kljub omejitvam raziskave rezultati predstavljajo dragocen prispevek k literaturi z razširitvijo znanja o napovedovanju telovadne uspešnosti na tekmovanju. Poleg tega rezultati zagotavljajo dokaze za prepoznavanje nadarjenosti pri telovadcih, vaditeljem ponujajo vpogled v izboljšanje učinkovitosti vadbe in dajejo priporočila za prihodnje raziskave na tem področju.
Componentes del rendimiento en gimnasia rítmica individual (Components of performance in individual rhythmic gymnastics)
La Gimnasia Rítmica es un deporte en el que el rendimiento en la competición se rige por criterios especificados en el código de puntuación y depende de cuatro componentes: dificultad corporal, dificultad de aparato, ejecución artística y ejecución técnica. El objetivo del presente estudio fue identificar cuál de estos componentes es el más significativo en el rendimiento en un ejercicio individual y si el nivel de la competición, la categoría (edad de las gimnastas), o el aparato con el que se realiza el ejercicio, modifica su comportamiento. Para la realización del estudio se contó con las puntuaciones obtenidas en 2378 ejercicios de competición individual, pertenecientes a tres niveles de rendimiento distintos, y a cuatro categorías de edad. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo de las variables estudiadas, la correlación de Pearson para determinar la asociación entre las diferentes variables, y un análisis de regresión lineal simple para conocer la magnitud de los efectos de las variables sobre la nota final. Los resultados encontrados indican que los componentes más importantes en la composición de los ejercicios para obtener una puntuación más alta fueron, primer lugar la nota de dificultad de aparato, después la nota de dificultad corporal y en tercer lugar la nota de ejecución técnica, siendo casi irrelevante la nota de ejecución artística. Atendiendo a estos resultados, las estrategias de entrenamiento deberían dirigirse hacia la exploración del potencial de las gimnastas en las dificultades de aparato, así como optimizar la composición de los ejercicios en función de este componente. Abstract.  Rhythmic Gymnastics is a sport in which competition performance is governed by criteria specified in the scoring code and depends on four components: body difficulty, apparatus difficulty, artistic execution and technical execution. The objective of the present study was to identify which of these components is the most significant in the performance in an individual exercise and if the level of the competition, the category (age of the gymnasts), or the apparatus with which the exercise is performed, modify their behavior. To carry out the study, the scores obtained in 2378 individual competition exercises were used, belonging to 3 different performance levels, and to four age categories. A descriptive analysis of the studied variables was carried out, the Pearson correlation to determine the association between the different variables, and a simple linear regression analysis to know the magnitude of the effects of the variables on the final grade. The results found indicate that the most important components in the composition of the exercises to obtain a higher score were, firstly, the apparatus difficulty score, then the body difficulty score, and in third place the technical execution score, being almost the note of artistic execution is irrelevant. Based on these results, training strategies should be directed towards exploring the gymnasts potential in apparatus difficulties, as well as optimizing the composition of the exercises based on this component. Training Load and Recovery During a Pre-Olympic Season in Professional Rhythmic Gymnasts
Rhythmic gymnastics requires a high level of complexity and perfection of technical gestures, associated with well-developed physical and artistic capacities. The training-load and recovery profiles of rhythmic gymnasts across a season are unknown. To analyze the training load and recovery of professional rhythmic gymnasts during 1 season. Cohort study. Brazilian National Training Center of Rhythmic Gymnastics and competition facilities. Eight gymnasts from the Brazilian national senior rhythmic gymnastics group. Session rating of perceived exertion (session-RPE) and total quality recovery (TQR) scores were collected daily for 43 weeks. We obtained the session-RPE after each session and TQR score before the first session of the day. Performances during 5 competitions were also recorded. The season was divided into 8 periods. Total weekly internal training load (wITL), training intensity, frequency, duration, recovery, and acute : chronic workload ratio were calculated for analysis. The season mean wITL was 10 381 ± 4894 arbitrary units, mean session-RPE score was 5.0 ± 1.6, and mean TQR score was 12.8 ± 1.3. The gymnasts trained an average of 8.7 ± 2.9 sessions per week, with a mean duration of 219 ± 36 minutes. Each competitive period showed increased wITL compared with the previous period. Training-load variables (wITL and session-RPE) and recovery were inversely correlated. Gymnasts were poorly recovered (TQR < 13) during 50.9% of the season (n = 167 times), especially during competitive weeks. Spikes in load (acute : chronic workload ratio ≥ 1.5) occurred across 18.1% of the season (n = 55 times). The training-load variables and recovery changed throughout a professional rhythmic gymnastics group season, mainly during competitive periods. The correct distribution of training load is critical to ensure that gymnasts are entering competitions in a recovered state.
The perspective of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games from the analysis of continental championships in women’s artistics gymnastics
Aim. By analyzing the performances of all participants in the continental competitions of women's artistic gymnastics, we aim to create a 'profile' of the potential winning gymnast in team events, individual all-around, as well as apparatus competitions at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Material and methods. The study was conducted by analyzing the scores achieved by gymnasts from four continents at the continental competitions mentioned above. At the African Championships, 25 athletes from 7 countries participated, at the European Championships, 154 gymnasts from 38 countries participated, at the Asian Championships, 46 athletes from 14 countries participated, at the Pan American Championships, 60 athletes from 20 countries participated. Results. Following the execution of this study and monitoring the results of each previously mentioned continental competition, we have gathered a set of valuable data, including: Team competition results; Individual all-around competition results; Apparatus competition results. All of these data/grades/results can provide us with valuable information regarding the skill level of the continental representative athletes, either on a national level, in the individual all-around, or on specific apparatuses, at this training stage. By analyzing the obtained data, we have been focusing on preparation for the most crucial competition concluding this Olympic cycle. Conclusions. We consider that the winners at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, based on the profile obtained from the data collected, will be those who accumulate a minimum total of 166,000 points in the team competition, over 56,000 points in the Individual All-Around competition, an average of over 14,000 points between the two vaults in the Vault competition, a minimum of 14,600 points on Uneven Bars, a minimum of 14,400 points on Beam, and over 14,000 points in Floor Exercise.
Team Sport Athletes May Be Less Likely To Suffer Anxiety or Depression than Individual Sport Athletes
The objective of the study was to determine whether 1) the proportion of athletes with mental health diagnoses and 2) athlete motivations for playing differ between team sports and individual sports. We conducted a cross-sectional study of child and adolescent athletes assessed at a sports injury prevention center. We compared self-reported anxiety, depression, and reasons for participating in sports between athletes in individual sports (e.g. gymnastics, running, diving) and team sports (e.g. soccer, football, hockey). In addition, we categorized motivation for participating in sports as 1) for fun, with associated benefits of participation including, motives such as making friends and being part of a team or 2) for goal-oriented reasons with associated benefits of participation including motives such as obtaining scholarship or controlling weight. At the time of this analysis, 756 athletes between the ages of 6 and 18 years had undergone a sports injury prevention evaluation. Most athletes were White (85%) and there was a slight female predominance (56%). Of the total population, 8% reported suffering from anxiety or depression. A higher proportion of individual sport athletes reported anxiety or depression than team sport athletes (13% vs. 7%, p < 0.01). Individual sport athletes were more likely than athletes in team sports to play their sports for goal-oriented reasons, as opposed to for fun (30% vs. 21%, p < 0.05). Individual sport athletes are more likely to report anxiety and depression than team sport athletes. The mental health benefits of participation in organized sports may vary between individual sport athletes and those playing team sports.
Epidemiology of National Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Gymnastics Injuries, 2009–2010 Through 2013–2014
Recent injury-surveillance data for collegiate-level women's gymnastics are limited. In addition, researchers have not captured non-time-loss injuries (ie, injuries resulting in restriction of participation <1 day). To describe the epidemiology of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women's gymnastics injuries during the 2009-2010 through 2013-2014 academic years. Descriptive epidemiology study. Aggregate injury and exposure data collected from 11 women's gymnastics programs providing 28 seasons of data. Collegiate student-athletes participating in women's gymnastics during the 2009-2010 through 2013-2014 academic years. Women's gymnastics data from the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program (ISP) during the 2009-2010 through 2013-2014 academic years were analyzed. Injury rates; injury rate ratios; injury proportions by body site, diagnosis, and apparatus; and injury proportion ratios were reported with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The ISP captured 418 women's gymnastics injuries, a rate of 9.22/1000 athlete-exposures (AEs; 95% CI = 8.33, 10.10). The competition injury rate (14.49/1000 AEs) was 1.67 times the practice injury rate (8.69/1000 AEs; 95% CI = 1.27, 2.19). When considering time-loss injuries only, the injury rate during this study period (3.62/1000 AEs) was lower than rates reported in earlier NCAA ISP surveillance data. Commonly injured body sites were the ankle (17.9%, n = 75), lower leg/Achilles tendon (13.6%, n = 57), trunk (13.4%, n = 56), and foot (12.4%, n = 52). Common diagnoses were ligament sprain (20.3%, n = 85) and muscle/tendon strain (18.7%, n = 78). Overall, 12.4% (n = 52) of injuries resulted in time loss of more than 3 weeks. Of the 291 injuries reported while a student-athlete used an apparatus (69.6%), most occurred during the floor exercise (41.9%, n = 122) and on the uneven bars (28.2%, n = 82). We observed a lower time-loss injury rate for women's gymnastics than shown in earlier NCAA ISP surveillance data. Safety initiatives in women's gymnastics, such as \"sting mats,\" padded equipment, and a redesigned vault table, may have contributed to minimizing the frequency and severity of injury.
Analysis of eating disorders in fit kid aesthetic sport
Eating disorders encompass a range of mental health conditions characterized by disrupted eating behaviors, often accompanied by attitudes or practices focused on weight management. Certain sports, particularly aesthetic sports, pose a higher risk for these disorders, being more prevalent among elite athletes compared to recreational or non-competitive participants. Objective: This research aims to analyze the potential attitudes and risk behaviors associated with the development of eating disorders among athletes in the Fit Kid discipline, considering factors such as age range and competition level. Additionally, the study aims to identify any correlation between higher weight and BMI and the increased prevalence of eating disorders. Materials & methods: 66 Fit Kid athletes between 11 and 19 years of age participated in this descriptive study. The instrument used to collect the information was the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) and the data were analysed with the SPSS 28.0 statistical package. Results: The main results reveal a higher level of risky eating attitudes in the highest level of competition and in athletes with a higher BMI and weight.
Spartakiads
Every five years from 1955 to 1985, mass Czechoslovak gymnastic demonstrations and sporting parades called Spartakiads were held to mark the 1945 liberation of Czechoslovakia. Involving hundreds of thousands of male and female performers of all ages and held in the world’s largest stadium—a space built expressly for this purpose—the synchronized and unified movements of the Czech citizenry embodied, quite literally, the idealized Socialist people: a powerful yet pliant force directed by the regime.This book explores the political, social, and aesthetic dimensions of these mass physical demonstrations, with a particular focus on their roots in the völkisch nationalism of the German Turner movement and the Czech Sokol gymnastic tradition. Epidemiology of Injuries in National Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Gymnastics: 2014–2015 Through 2018–2019
The increasing trend in practice injury incidence is noteworthy although competition injury rates were higher overall. Findings also suggest that the etiologies of overuse injuries and inflammatory conditions as well as the biomechanical aspects of concussions warrant further attention.
