Broken field : a novel
\"Told from the perspective of a high school girl and a football coach, Broken Field reveals the tensions that tear at the fabric of a small town when a high school hazing incident escalates and threatens a championship season. Set on the high prairies of Montana, in small towns scattered across vast landscapes, the distances in Broken Field are both insurmountable and deeply internalized. Life is dusty and hard, and men are judged by their labor. Women have to be tougher yet. That's what sixteen-year-old Josie Frehse learns as she struggles to meet the expectations of her community while fumbling with her own desires. Tom Warner coaches the Dumont Wolfpack, an eight-man football team, typical for such small towns. Warner is stumbling through life, numbed by the death of his own young son and the dissolution of his marriage. But he's jolted into taking sides when his star players are accused of a hazing incident that happened right under his nose. The scandal divides and ignites the town and in Broken Field, Jeff Hull brilliantly gives breadth and depth to both sides of this fractured community, where the roots of bullying reach deep, secrets are buried, and, in a school obsessed with winning, everyone loses\" -- Provided by publisher.
Shop Hazing Rituals
by
Meldrum, Gabe
in
Hazing
2026
Every shop has its quirks, and some times those quirks come in the form of \"initiation rituals\" for the new guy. Looking back, Meldrum can say he endured his fair share of shop hazing as he was making his way through the ranks -- and he wouldn't trade those memories for anything. One that still makes me laugh was the clever use of spotting blue. If you've ever worked with the stuff, you know it doesn't take much to make a big mess. A co-worker decided to test his awareness by putting a tiny dab in a few inconspicuous spots -- just enough to trip him up but not enough to ruin his day. The first surprise was under the handle of his toolbox drawer. He grabbed it without thinking, and suddenly his hand looked like it had been through a painter's workshop. Before he even figured out where it came from, he had already managed to smudge it onto his shirt. The next trick was a little more personal: a discreet swipe on the nosepiece of his safety glasses. He didn't notice until after break, when someone casually asked him if he was \"experimenting with war paint.\"

Systematic Review of Teammate Bullying and Hazing with Recommendations to Advance Peer Aggression Research in Sport
2025
Although sport participation can have positive benefits for athletes, there are also unique risks for receipt of aggression. Bullying and hazing occurs across teammates in this setting and can have detrimental physical and psychological effects on athletes. This systematic review was designed to explore the sport literature to (1) uncover conceptualizations and associated prevalence of bullying and hazing and (2) elucidate factors related to bullying and hazing. PRISMA guidelines were followed when completing the review, and 38 studies were included. Prevalence rates vary from less than 10% to over 70% across studies, and most studies sampled athletes from the United States or Canada. Factors associated with bullying or hazing experiences included younger athlete ages, newcomer status on team, increased Machiavellianism, aggressive-coercive personality styles, male gender, lower ability or skill level, and social norms for aggression. To strengthen future research in this area, scholars should more intentionally follow American Psychological Association’s Journal Article Reporting Standards and should ensure that chosen definitions and measures of bullying and hazing are reliable and valid in selected samples. Furthermore, it is impossible to consistently understand prevention and intervention efficacies related to bullying and hazing until researchers can define and delineate between varied forms of teammate-to-teammate aggression.

True gentlemen : the broken pledge of America's fraternities
\"College fraternity culture has never been more embattled. Once a mainstay of campus life, fraternities are now subject to withering criticism for reinforcing white male privilege and undermining the lasting social and economic value of a college education. No fraternity embodies this problem more than Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a national organization with more than 15,000 undergraduate brothers spread over 230 chapters nationwide. While SAE enrollment is still strong, it has been pilloried for what John Hechinger calls \"the unholy trinity of fraternity life\": racism, deadly drinking, and misogyny. Hazing rituals have killed ten undergraduates in its chapters since 2005, and, in 2015, a video of a racist chant breaking out among its Oklahoma University members went viral. That same year, SAE was singled out by a documentary on campus rape, The Hunting Ground. Yet despite these problems and others, SAE remains a large institution with strong ties to Wall Street and significant political reach. In True Gentlemen, Hechinger embarks on a deep investigation of SAE and fraternity culture generally, exposing the vast gulf between its founding ideals and the realities of its impact on colleges and the world at large. He shows how national fraternities are reacting to a slowly dawning new reality, and asks what the rest of us should do about it. Should we ban them outright, or will they only be driven underground? Can an institution this broken be saved? With rare access and skillful storytelling, Hechinger draws a fascinating and necessary portrait of an institution in deep need of reform, and makes a case for how it can happen\"-- Provided by publisher.
Testing workplace hazing, moral disengagement and deviant behaviors in hospitality industry
2024
Purpose
This study aims to assess the direct impact of workplace hazing and the indirect impact via moral disengagement on organizational deviance behavior and negative word-of-mouth (WOM) communication in the hospitality industry of Pakistan. This research also addresses the significance of psychological (resilience) and social factors (friendship prevalence) as moderators of the relationship between workplace hazing and moral disengagement.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a multirespondent strategy, the data was collected from 319 newcomers employed in the Pakistani hospitality industry and analyzed using structural equation modeling.
Findings
The results reveal that workplace hazing increases moral disengagement, organizational deviance and negative WOM communication. Moreover, various psychological factors can significantly decrease and mediate the negative influence of workplace hazing on moral disengagement.
Practical implications
The managers should explicitly and formally handle the workplace hazing issues like harassment and bullying to build a positive working environment for newcomers.
Originality/value
This study addresses a gap in determining the significance of workplace hazing and its impact on moral disengagement, organizational deviance and negative WOM communication. Also, this study contributes to the literature by examining either social or psychological factors that play an important role in dampening the negative impact of workplace hazing.
