NO EXTRA MONEY FOR LEGAL FEES IN LAWSUIT
A family who was awarded $862,000 in damages in 1999 after the mother accused her psychiatrist of implanting her with false memories of sexual abuse is not entitled to an extra $1.25 million in legal fees, the state Supreme Court ruled Friday. [Joan Hess] and her family accused Dr. Juan Fernandez III of implanting false memories during hypnosis, leading her to believe she was sexually abused by her father, she had more than 75 personalities and her parents were members of a cult that forced others to have sex with animals and witness babies being killed and eaten. Joan Hess contended none of things brought up in the memories occurred, and the ordeal of believing they did permanently harmed her, leading her to falsely accuse her father and causing the breakup of her marriage.
Whodunit
This is the 19th novel in [Joan Hess]'s cheerful and charming [Claire Malloy] series, a book in which Claire gets involved in the local ESL program. Ruth Rendall's former DCI Reg Wexford sits at home these days, in retirement from the Kingsmarkham coppers, busy reading all five volumes of Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Logic says it's Rendall who should be retired. She turns 84 in February, almost 20 years senior to Wexford. But it's [Ruth Rendell] who persists in writing with the same imaginative plotting and immaculate prose she has always brought to her crime novels.
