A World Without Jews

Why exactly did the Nazis burn the Hebrew Bible everywhere in Germany on November 9, 1938? The perplexing event has not been adequately accounted for by historians in their large-scale assessments of how and why the Holocaust occurred. In this gripping new analysis, Alon Confino draws on an array of archives across three continents to propose a penetrating new assessment of one of the central moral problems of the twentieth century. To a surprising extent, Confino demonstrates, the mass murder of Jews during the war years was powerfully anticipated in the culture of the prewar years.The author shifts his focus away from the debates over what the Germans did or did not know about the Holocaust and explores instead how Germans came to conceive of the idea of a Germany without Jews. He traces the stories the Nazis told themselves-where they came from and where they were heading-and how those stories led to the conclusion that Jews must be eradicated in order for the new Nazi civilization to arise. The creation of this new empire required that Jews and Judaism be erased from Christian history, and this was the inspiration-and justification-for Kristallnacht. As Germans imagined a future world without Jews, persecution and extermination became imaginable, and even justifiable.

In Murder in Manchuria , Scott D. Seligman explores an
unsolved murder set amid the chaos that reigned in China in the
run-up to World War II. The story unfolds against the backdrop of a
three-country struggle for control of Manchuria-an area some called
China's \"Wild East\"-and an explosive mixture of nationalities,
religions, and ideologies. Semyon Kaspé, a young Jewish musician,
is kidnapped, tortured, and ultimately murdered by disaffected,
antisemitic White Russians, secretly acting on the orders of
Japanese military overlords who covet his father's wealth. When
local authorities deliberately slow-walk the search for the
kidnappers, a young French diplomat takes over and launches his own
investigation. Part cold-case thriller and part social history, the
true, tragic saga of Kaspé is told in the context of the larger,
improbable story of the lives of the twenty thousand Jews who
called Harbin home at the beginning of the twentieth century. Scott
D. Seligman recounts the events that led to their arrival and their
hasty exodus-and solves a crime that has puzzled historians for
decades.
The Memory Factory

The Memory Factory introduces an eng-speaking public to the significant women artists of Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, each chosen for her aesthetic innovations and participation in public exhibitions. These women played important public roles as exhibiting artists, both individually and in collectives, but this history has been silenced over time. Their stories show that the city of Vienna was contradictory and cosmopolitan: despite men-only policies in its main art institutions, it offered a myriad of unexpected ways for women artists to forge successful public careers. Women artists came from the provinces, Russia, and Germany to participate in its vibrant art scene. However, and especially because so many of the artists were Jewish, their contributions were actively obscured beginning in the late 1930s. Many had to flee Austria, losing their studios and lifework in the process. Some were killed in concentration camps. Along with the stories of individual women artists, the author reconstructs the history of separate women artists’ associations and their exhibitions. Chapters covering the careers of Tina Blau, Elena Luksch-Makowsky, Helene Funke, and Teresa Ries (among others) point to a more integrated and cosmopolitan art world than previously thought; one where women became part of the avant-garde, accepted and even highlighted in major exhibitions at the Secession and with the Klimt group. “This is an excellent addition to the literature on fin-de-siècle Vienna, well-researched and well-argued. It highlights little-known artists and situates them in a novel interpretation of women’s roles in the art world. How Could This Happen

A forgotten historical figure and his influence on the
writing of James Joyce
In this book, Neil Davison argues that Albert Altman (1853 ‒
1903), a Dublin-based businessman and Irish nationalist, influenced
James Joyce's creation of the character of Leopold Bloom, as well
as Ulysses 's broader themes surrounding race, nationalism,
and empire. Using extensive archival research, Davison reveals
parallels between the lives of Altman and Bloom, including how the
experience of double marginalization-which Altman felt as both a
Jew in Ireland and an Irishman in the British Empire-is a major
idea explored in Joyce's work.
Altman, a successful salt and coal merchant, was involved in
municipal politics over issues of Home Rule and labor, and
frequently appeared in the press over the two decades of Joyce's
youth. His prominence, Davison shows, made him a familiar name in
the Home Rule circles with which Joyce and his father most
identified. The book concludes by tracing the influence of Altman's
career on the Dubliners story \"Ivy Day in the Committee
Room,\" as well as throughout the whole of Ulysses . Through
Altman's biography, Davison recovers a forgotten life story that
illuminates Irish and Jewish identity and culture in Joyce's
Dublin.
