This article explores the hypotheses put forth in the literature on health and sexuality to explain vulnerability to HIV. The aim is to generate meaningful narratives about the reasons that justify forms of unsafe sexuality among men, which could serve as a platform for future research (perhaps based on surveys). The questions addressed are as follows: Is vulnerability to HIV, as suggested by the literature on health and epidemiology, a problem of ignorance or lack of information about risk? Or could it be, as those literatures also suggest, the result of an inability to protect oneself? Or, on the contrary, could we be, as the literature on sexuality postulates, facing a set of decisions made in a context of sufficient information, but that accept uncertainty about risk in the hope of achieving certain objectives in terms of personal and sexual satisfaction? Based on the analysis of more than 30 hours of material, obtained from 22 in-depth interviews with MSM, a vision of sexual relations among men is proposed, understood as the result of complex balances between objectives as opposed as safety and risk. Trust plays a central role in resolving these balances: often, risky sexual practices are chosen in the need to establish relationships of trust. Uncertainty is accepted as a small price to pay to connect with sexual and emotional partners. Invisible Geographies: A Study of Migration and Male Homoeroticism in Tijuana through Spinozist Affects
2023
Affect-based studies consider that peoples’ lives and behaviors cannot be entirely grasped and understood by rational choice models. The main goal of this article is to understand how factors like sexuality and migration affect the relations between people and spaces. Following Spinoza’s Ethics and subsequent interpretations, the article considers that bodies are influenced by previous interactions and act accordingly, and that space is a relational mode of substance perceived through attributes and modes affecting individuals and articulating the relationship of space, sexuality, and migration. This research studies same-sex-attracted men who moved to Tijuana, Mexico. Results show that affects (expressed through actions and passions) inform people’s relations to space based on their valorization of life events and expectations; that the meanings of space are personally constructed, relational, volatile, and invisible to others; and that most interviewees didn’t feel comfortable avowing to the gay identity but identified themselves as such, since, to some extent, gayness can escape from the moral stigma of male-male interaction in Latin America.

Nature Fantasies
2023
In this original study, Gabriel Horowitz examines the work of select nineteenth- and twentieth-century Latin American writers through the lens of contemporary theoretical debates about nature, postcoloniality, and national identity. In the work of José Martí, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Jorge Luis Borges, Augusto Roa Bastos, Cesar Aira, and others, he traces historical constructions of nature in regional intellectual traditions and texts as they inform political culture on the broader global stage. By investigating national literary discourses from Cuba, Argentina, and Paraguay, he identifies a common narrative thread that imagines the utopian wilderness of the New World as a symbolic site of independence from Spain. In these texts, Horowitz argues, an expressed desire to return to the nation’s foundational nature contributed to a movement away from political and social engagement and toward a “biopolitical state,” in which nature, traditionally seen as pre-political, conversely becomes its center.

Collective memory
2007,2009
We take for granted the survival into the present of artifacts from the past. Indeed the discipline of archaeology would be impossible without the survival of such artifacts. What is the implication of the durability or ephemerality of past material culture for the reproduction of societies in the past? In this book, Andrew Jones argues that the material world offers a vital framework for the formation of collective memory. He uses the topic of memory to critique the treatment of artifacts as symbols by interpretative archaeologists and artifacts as units of information (or memes) by behavioral archaeologists, instead arguing for a treatment of artifacts as forms of mnemonic trace that have an impact on the senses. Using detailed case studies from prehistoric Europe, he further argues that archaeologists can study the relationship between mnemonic traces in the form of networks of reference in artifactual and architectural forms.

2026
This research aims to understand the influence of culture and social cognition on the formation of toxic masculinity behavior in young adult men in Indonesia. In the context of Indonesian culture, understanding how these masculinity norms are internalized is relevant, particularly since culture often reinforces stereotypes of masculinity. This research employed a quantitative approach to examine beliefs regarding traditional masculinity with the MRNI-SF and a qualitative approach to explore perspectives on masculinity. Respondents were young adult men in Indonesia willing to participate, and the data were analyzed descriptively and thematically. The results showed that the family, especially parents, plays a crucial role in instilling traditional masculinity values such as responsibility and leadership. In addition, the extended family also provides alternative models of masculinity through daily interactions. These results highlight the role of the family as a mediator between traditional norms and contemporary views. This research is expected to provide a new understanding of the complexity of masculinity formation in Indonesia.

Engaging Men and Boys in Gender Justice Through Pro-Feminist Podcasts
2023
This article explores pro-feminist podcasting as an emergent approach to engaging men and boys in gender justice. In recent years, an increasing number of podcasts have surfaced which implicitly or explicitly espouse pro-feminist praxis. However, scholarship in this area remains underexamined. This article seeks to move the literature forward by 1) situating pro-feminist podcasting within the wider multi-disciplinary literatures on critical podcasting pedagogies; 2) sharing examples from the current landscape of English-language pro-feminist podcasts; and 3) discussing the potential benefits, challenges, and risks of this approach. In doing so, this article considers how pro-feminist podcasts have the potential to expand men’s engagement efforts to wider audiences, provide new accessible entry points, and help facilitate ways to bring together and mobilise groups of pro-feminist men. However, there are several challenges and tensions involved in pro-feminist podcasting - as is the case with other forms of engaging men and pro-feminist allyship - which demonstrate that this work should be undertaken with care, ongoing reflexivity, and accountability. Overall, this article seeks to start a conversation about the potential of podcasting in the field of engaging men and boys and to draw attention to the need for further work and research in this area.
