2018
\"Berta Isla thought she knew what to expect from life. When she was a young girl she decided she had found her match in Tomás Nevinson--the dashing half-Spanish, half-English boy in her class with an extraordinary gift for languages--so she was even able to endure their time apart while Tomás studied at Oxford. But after his graduation, he returns to Madrid a changed man. Distracted, sullen, and anxious, Berta's new husband has become a stranger to her, and she begins to suspect that his mysterious job at the Foreign Office is responsible. But it's more than just that: Tomás has unwittingly set in motion events that will derail forever the life they had planned. With unerring insight into the most shadowed corners of the human soul, Marías plunges the reader into the growing chasm between Berta and Tomás and the decisions that irreversibly change the course of the couple's fate. Berta Isla is a novel of love and truth, fear and secrecy, and the destinies we bring upon ourselves\"-- Provided by publisher.

Daily life is connected life, its rhythms driven by endless email pings and responses, the chimes and beeps of continually arriving text messages, tweets and retweets, Facebook updates, pictures and videos to post and discuss. Our perpetual connectedness gives us endless opportunities to be part of the give-and-take of networking. Some worry that this new environment makes us isolated and lonely. But in Networked , Lee Rainie and Barry Wellman show how the large, loosely knit social circles of networked individuals expand opportunities for learning, problem solving, decision making, and personal interaction. The new social operating system of \"networked individualism\" liberates us from the restrictions of tightly knit groups; it also requires us to develop networking skills and strategies, work on maintaining ties, and balance multiple overlapping networks. Rainie and Wellman outline the \"triple revolution\" that has brought on this transformation: the rise of social networking, the capacity of the Internet to empower individuals, and the always-on connectivity of mobile devices. Drawing on extensive evidence, they examine how the move to networked individualism has expanded personal relationships beyond households and neighborhoods; transformed work into less hierarchical, more team-driven enterprises; encouraged individuals to create and share content; and changed the way people obtain information. Rainie and Wellman guide us through the challenges and opportunities of living in the evolving world of networked individuals.
Factors Affecting Online Infidelity: A Review /Cevrimici Aldatmayi Etkileyen Faktorler: Bir Gozden Gecirme
2023
Online infidelity has been a topic of discussion for the past two decades. Hence, while it is on the agenda of current researches, the associated factors of online infidelity have not yet been sufficiently clarified. The current review examines factors affecting online infidelity in line with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis guidelines. In the review the studies were included considering the criteria of (i) being an empirical study, (ii) being written in Turkish or English, (iii) being published in peer-reviewed journals (iv), evaluating at least one factor that may affect online infidelity. Eight studies which include factors affecting online infidelity were examined and the findings of these studies were evaluated. More positive attitudes towards infidelity, lower relationship commitment, higher quality of alternative partners, lower marital quality, higher loneliness, lower relationship satisfaction, higher relationship uncertainty, anxious and avoidant attachment, and being in a strong position were found significantly associated with online infidelity. 2024
The potential implications of the COVID-19 pandemic include an increased strain on the relationships of cohabiting couples. The effects of an online intervention based on the Awareness, Courage, and Love (ACL) model from Functional Analytic Psychotherapy were compared to those of a protocol with a leisure activity (movie). The participants (28 Brazilian dyads) were randomly assigned to two groups. Group 1, 1st session--ACL protocol and 2nd session--movie protocol (one week apart). Group 2, in reverse order. The groups completed two scales (The Couple Assessment of Relationship Elements--CARE and Inclusion of Other in the Self Scale--IOS); one assessed marital relationship quality, and the other evaluated interpersonal closeness. The scales were answered three times: before and after each session and one week later (follow-up). The data presented homogeneity between groups before the intervention (Student's t-test). The impact of the ACL and movie protocols on the quality of marital relationships and closeness of couples was tested using the General Mixed Model, which had random effects on individuals and couples. The mean scores obtained in the two scales increased significantly from the pre- to the post-test in ACL and movie protocols, with no discrepancy between the two interventions. In the follow-up, the score of both scales decreased. We concluded that the interventions with the ACL and the movie protocols efficiently approximated couples in the pandemic scenario and improved the relationship quality indicators right after the sessions. Keywords: Couples. Functional Analytic Psychotherapy. Interpersonal Relationships. Psychological Intervention. COVID-19. Os grupos completaram duas escalas (The Couple Assessment of Relationship Elements--CARE e Inclusion of Other in the Self Scale--IOS); uma avaliou a qualidade do relacionamento conjugal, e a outra avaliou a proximidade interpessoal. No follow-up, a pontuacao de ambas as escalas diminuiu. Understanding the role of the husband in supporting early detection, diagnosis, and treatment for breast cancer patients in Northern Tanzania: a qualitative study
2025
Background
Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer related morbidity and mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa with women often being diagnosed at advanced stages of disease. Little is known about how the role of the husband impacts the diagnosis and treatment of women with breast cancer. In this study, we aimed to describe the role of the husband in the experiences of breast cancer patients in Tanzania.
Methods
We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with breast cancer patients (
n
= 20), physicians (
n
= 10), nurses (
n
= 10), and traditional healers (
n
= 18) exploring perceptions of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in Tanzania. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and subsequently coded by three independent reviewers. Emergent themes were identified using thematic analysis approach.
Results
We identified two distinct domains from responses: supportive husbands and unsupportive husbands. Within these domains, 5 supportive and 4 unsupportive themes were identified. Supportive husbands provided financial assistance, encouraged early treatment, adopted a caregiver role, displayed leadership in decision-making, and provided emotional support. Unsupportive husbands displayed stigma and shame, refused financial support, and resorted to rejection and abandonment which ultimately led to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
Conclusions
Majority of patients, providers, and traditional healers described unsupportive husbands as a component contributing to the delayed presentation and negative experiences of patients. We inferred that spousal financial concerns and societal stigma often drove husband rejection, which resulted in a lack of emotional and financial support for patients and contributed to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Improvements in husband education and communication may reduce stigma and misconceptions regarding breast cancer and may help increase the number of supportive husbands.
