Youth Internet Safety Education: Aligning Programs With the Evidence Base
Background: This review critically examines the messages of youth internet safety education programs in the light of research about both the dynamics of internet dangers and the efficacy of youth prevention education. Methods: Using terms “internet safety education” and “digital citizenship,” a Google search identified 12 multi-topic safety programs. Review articles were identified via Google Scholar for six forms of online harm to youth that have been targeted by many of these programs: cyberbullying (19 articles); online sexual exploitation (23 articles); sexting (19 articles); online fraud, hacking, and identity theft (6 articles); online suicide and self-harm promotion (18 articles); and internet overuse or addiction (15 articles). Findings: There appear to be mismatches between dynamics revealed in the research about internet harms and the messages emphasized in educational programs, particularly on the issues of sexual exploitation and sexting. Overall, the review literature also suggests major advantages to integrating internet safety into already well-established and evidence-based programs currently addressing related off-line harms, for example, programs focusing on general bullying, dating abuse, or sexual abuse prevention. The advantages stem from four factors: (1) the considerable overlap between online harms and similar off-line harms, (2) the apparent greater prevalence of off-line harms, (3) the evidence that the same risk factors lie behind both online and off-line harms, and most importantly, (4) the substantially superior evidence base for the longer standing programs developed originally around the off-line harms.

The Effect of COVID-19 Restrictions on Routine Activities and Online Crime
ObjectivesRoutine activity theory suggests that levels of crime are affected by peoples’ activity patterns. Here, we examine if, through their impact on people’s on- and off-line activities, COVID-19 restriction affected fraud committed on- and off-line during the pandemic. Our expectation was that levels of online offending would closely follow changes to mobility and online activity—with crime increasing as restrictions were imposed (and online activity increased) and declining as they were relaxed. For doorstep fraud, which has a different opportunity structure, our expectation was that the reverse would be true.MethodCOVID-19 restrictions systematically disrupted people’s activity patterns, creating quasi-experimental conditions well-suited to testing the effects of “interventions” on crime. We exploit those conditions using ARIMA time series models and UK data for online shopping fraud, hacking, doorstep fraud, online sales, and mobility to test hypotheses. Doorstep fraud is modelled as a non-equivalent dependent variable, allowing us to test whether findings were selective and in line with theoretical expectations.ResultsAfter controlling for other factors, levels of crime committed online were positively associated with monthly variation in online activities and negatively associated with monthly variation in mobility. In contrast, and as expected, monthly variation in doorstep fraud was positively associated with changes in mobility.ConclusionsWe find evidence consistent with routine activity theory, suggesting that disruptions to people’s daily activity patterns affect levels of crime committed both on- and off-line. The theoretical implications of the findings, and the need to develop a better evidence base about what works to reduce online crime, are discussed.

Advancing cybersecurity: a comprehensive review of AI-driven detection techniques
As the number and cleverness of cyber-attacks keep increasing rapidly, it's more important than ever to have good ways to detect and prevent them. Recognizing cyber threats quickly and accurately is crucial because they can cause severe damage to individuals and businesses. This paper takes a close look at how we can use artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), alongside metaheuristic algorithms to detect cyber-attacks better. We've thoroughly examined over sixty recent studies to measure how effective these AI tools are at identifying and fighting a wide range of cyber threats. Our research includes a diverse array of cyberattacks such as malware attacks, network intrusions, spam, and others, showing that ML and DL methods, together with metaheuristic algorithms, significantly improve how well we can find and respond to cyber threats. We compare these AI methods to find out what they're good at and where they could improve, especially as we face new and changing cyber-attacks. This paper presents a straightforward framework for assessing AI Methods in cyber threat detection. Given the increasing complexity of cyber threats, enhancing AI methods and regularly ensuring strong protection is critical. We evaluate the effectiveness and the limitations of current ML and DL proposed models, in addition to the metaheuristic algorithms. Recognizing these limitations is vital for guiding future enhancements. We're pushing for smart and flexible solutions that can adapt to new challenges. The findings from our research suggest that the future of protecting against cyber-attacks will rely on continuously updating AI methods to stay ahead of hackers' latest tricks.
