High-profile projects promoted by governments, local municipalities, and the media do not always meet program requirements or user expectations. The Riverside Museum in Glasgow by Zaha Hadid Architects, which has generated significant discussion in the media, is used to test this claim. A multimodal inquiry adopts three factors: criticism, performance evaluation, and habitability. Results from this method are then correlated with visual attention scans using software from 3M Corporation to map unconscious user engagement. A wide spectrum of tools is employed, including a walking tour assessment procedure, contemplation of selected settings, navigational mapping, and assessing user emotional experiences. Key aspects of the design and spatial qualities of this museum are compared with an analysis of critical writings on how the project was portrayed in the media. Further, we examine socio-spatial practices, selected behavioral phenomena, and the emotional experiences that ensue from users’ interaction with the building and its immediate context. The findings suggest design shortcomings and, more worrisome, that spatial qualities relevant to users’ experiences do not seem to have been met. In going beyond the usual method of analysis, we apply new techniques of eye-tracking simulations, which verify results obtained by more traditional means. An in-depth analysis suggests the need for better compatibility between the imagined design ideas and the actual spatial environments in use.

The Colours of
2015
Colour as creative element Color is inextricably linked with architecture; as a design element and also as an inherent quality, it characterizes the shape and texture of the built fabric. The book presents extraordinary color schemes, both in terms of technology and aesthetics, for ground-breaking architecture with a wide spectrum of functions: from apartment to concert hall, from flagship store to city park. The focus is on the works of the three architects Frank O. Gehry, Jean Nouvel and Wang Shu. This is expanded by the works of other practices such as BIG, Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, Toyo Ito and SANAA.This publication presents a compendium that documents color schemes in architecture in the context of very different aesthetic approaches. The large-format photographs by Iwan Baan, Christian Richters, Roland Halbe and Philippe Ruault fascinate with their clarity and presence. All three main architects are Pritzker Prize winners With fascinating images by Iwan Baan and Christian Richters

How luxe is your laboratory?
2018
OPEN-PLAN INNOVATION The book rightly dwells on the architectural breakthrough of Louis Kahn's 1963 Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, with its imposing concrete facades, teak accents and white travertine marble courtyard. (The book does not cover more-controversial aspects of the Salk's configuration: its separation of senior and junior staff, for instance, has been criticized as elitist.) Contributors Kathleen Brandt and Brian Lonsway take us to the early 1970s with Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) conference room, a haven decked with then-novel beanbag chairs and whiteboard walls instead of a conference table. Designers collaborated with institute researchers to yield a beautiful, functional building with easily adaptable clean rooms and other lab spaces enclosed by glass that invite both light and transparency around the work.

Charles Jencks: architectural historian, landscape architect, and co-founder of Maggie’s Centres
2019
Maggie Cancer Care Centres Charles Jencks, landscape architect, critic, and author of 30 books on architectural history, who co-founded Maggie’s Centres to offer support to people with cancer, has died at his home in London at the age of 80. The result was the dazzlingly original Garden of Cosmic Speculation, conceived as a microcosm of the universe; it included depictions of giant black holes and DNA, aluminium sculptures, zigzagging staircases, and chequerboard patterns. Awards and publications In addition to those mentioned earlier, Jencks’s awards included the Melbourne Oration, Australia, 1974; the Bosom Lectures, Royal Society of Arts, London 1980; a RIBA gold medal, 1983; the Japanese Nara gold medal for architecture, 1992; Country Life Gardener of the Year, 1998; and an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow, 2005 Apart from his book, he contributed to magazines and journals.

3D-printed bridges
2025
3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) technology is rapidly gaining popularity in the construction industry, particularly for transportation infrastructure such as bridges. Unlike traditional construction methods, this innovative approach eliminates the need for formwork and enhances both economic efficiency and sustainability by lowering resource consumption and waste generation associated with formwork. This paper examines current research on 3D-printed concrete bridges, highlighting key areas such as concrete mixtures, design processes, construction techniques, and reinforcement strategies. It delves into computational methods like topology optimization and iterative “design by testing” approaches, which are crucial for developing structurally efficient and architecturally innovative bridges. Additionally, it reviews specific admixtures or additives within the concrete mix, assessing how they improve essential properties of printable concrete, including extrudability, buildability, and interlayer bonding. Moreover, it shows that the primary construction approach for 3DCP bridges involves prefabrication and on-site assembly, with robotic arm printers leading to scalability and precision. Reinforcement continues to be challenging, with the most commonly used strategies being post-tensioning, hybrid techniques, and fiber reinforcement. This paper offers insights into the advancements and challenges in 3D-printed concrete bridge construction, providing valuable guidance for future research and development in this field.
