Global and regional emissions estimates of 1,1-difluoroethane (HFC-152a, CH3CHF2) from in situ and air archive observations
High frequency, in situ observations from 11 globally distributed sites for the period 1994–2014 and archived air measurements dating from 1978 onward have been used to determine the global growth rate of 1,1-difluoroethane (HFC-152a, CH3CHF2). These observations have been combined with a range of atmospheric transport models to derive global emission estimates in a top-down approach. HFC-152a is a greenhouse gas with a short atmospheric lifetime of about 1.5 years. Since it does not contain chlorine or bromine, HFC-152a makes no direct contribution to the destruction of stratospheric ozone and is therefore used as a substitute for the ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). The concentration of HFC-152a has grown substantially since the first direct measurements in 1994, reaching a maximum annual global growth rate of 0.84 ± 0.05 ppt yr−1 in 2006, implying a substantial increase in emissions up to 2006. However, since 2007, the annual rate of growth has slowed to 0.38 ± 0.04 ppt yr−1 in 2010 with a further decline to an annual average rate of growth in 2013–2014 of −0.06 ± 0.05 ppt yr−1. The annual average Northern Hemisphere (NH) mole fraction in 1994 was 1.2 ppt rising to an annual average mole fraction of 10.1 ppt in 2014. Average annual mole fractions in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) in 1998 and 2014 were 0.84 and 4.5 ppt, respectively. We estimate global emissions of HFC-152a have risen from 7.3 ± 5.6 Gg yr−1 in 1994 to a maximum of 54.4 ± 17.1 Gg yr−1 in 2011, declining to 52.5 ± 20.1 Gg yr−1 in 2014 or 7.2 ± 2.8 Tg-CO2 eq yr−1. Analysis of mole fraction enhancements above regional background atmospheric levels suggests substantial emissions from North America, Asia, and Europe. Global HFC emissions (so called “bottom up” emissions) reported by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) are based on cumulative national emission data reported to the UNFCCC, which in turn are based on national consumption data. There appears to be a significant underestimate ( >  20 Gg) of “bottom-up” reported emissions of HFC-152a, possibly arising from largely underestimated USA emissions and undeclared Asian emissions.
Detection of Atmospheric Hydrofluorocarbon-22 with Ground-Based Remote High-Resolution Fourier Transform Spectroscopy over Hefei and an Estimation of Emissions in the Yangtze River Delta
Under the control of the Montreal Protocol and its amendments, hydrofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are used as temporary substitutes for ozone-depleting substances, such as chlorofluorocarbons, and are regulated for consumption and production. China plans to phase out HCFCs by 2030, and HCFC-22 (CHClF2) is currently the most abundant HCFC in the atmosphere. This study measures the vertical profiles and total columns of atmospheric HCFC-22 from January 2017 to December 2022, based on the mid-infrared solar spectra recorded by the ground-based high-resolution Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer at the Hefei remote sensing station. The HCFC-22 total columns over Hefei increased from 2017–2018 and gradually decreased in 2018–2022, with an annual variation rate of 5.98% and −1.02% ± 0.02%, respectively. Compared with the ACE-FTS satellite independent dataset, the FTIR data indicate good consistency with the ACE-FTS data at a 5–25 km altitude, with an average relative difference of −4.38 ± 0.83% between the vertical profiles. HCFC-22 emissions in the Yangtze River Delta from 2017 to 2022 are estimated, derived from measured total columns combined with the Lagrangian transport model and the Bayesian inversion technique. In the Yangtze River Delta, HCFC-22 emissions were high in 2017, with a value of 33.3 ± 16.8 kt, and decreased from 2018 to 2022, with a minimum of 27.3 ± 13.6 kt in 2022 during the observations.
Effect of irradiance on the emission of short-lived halocarbons from three common tropical marine microalgae
Marine algae have been reported as important sources of biogenic volatile halocarbons that are emitted into the atmosphere. These compounds are linked to destruction of the ozone layer, thus contributing to climate change. There may be mutual interactions between the halocarbon emission and the environment. In this study, the effect of irradiance on the emission of halocarbons from selected microalgae was investigated. Using controlled laboratory experiments, three tropical marine microalgae cultures, Synechococcus sp. UMACC 371 (cyanophyte), Parachlorella sp. UMACC 245 (chlorophyte) and Amphora sp. UMACC 370 (diatom) were exposed to irradiance of 0, 40 and 120 µmol photons m −2 s −1 . Stress in the microalgal cultures was indicated by the photosynthetic performance (F v /F m , maximum quantum yield). An increase in halocarbon emissions was observed at 120 µmol photons m −2 s −1 , together with a decrease in F v /F m . This was most evident in the release of CH 3 I by Amphora sp. Synechococcus sp. was observed to be the most affected by irradiance as shown by the increase in emissions of most halocarbons except for CHBr 3 and CHBr 2 Cl. High positive correlation between F v /F m and halocarbon emission rates was observed in Synechococcus sp. for CH 2 Br 2 . No clear trends in correlation could be observed for the other halocarbons in the other two microalgal species. This suggests that other mechanisms like mitochondria respiration may contribute to halocarbon production, in addition to photosynthetic performance.
On the Influence of Hydroxyl Radical Changes and Ocean Sinks on Estimated HCFC and HFC Emissions and Banks
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are potent greenhouse gases regulated under the Montreal Protocol and its amendments. Emission estimates generally use constant atmospheric lifetimes accounting for loss via hydroxyl radical (OH) reactions. However, chemistry‐climate models suggest OH increases after 1980, implying underestimated emissions. Further, HCFCs and HFCs are soluble in seawater and could be destroyed through in situ oceanic microbial activity. These ocean sinks are largely overlooked. Using a coupled atmosphere‐ocean model, we show that increases in modeled OH imply underestimated HCFC and HFC emissions by ∼10% near their respective peak emissions. Our model results also suggest that oceanic processes could lead to up to an additional 10% underestimation in these halocarbon emissions in the 2020s. Ensuring global compliance to the Protocol and accurate knowledge of contributions to global warming from these gases therefore requires understanding of these processes. Plain Language Summary Man‐made hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) contribute to global warming, prompting worldwide agreement to control the production of these chemicals. It is important to estimate their emissions to ensure global compliance with the agreed phaseout. But correct emission estimation requires knowledge of different loss pathways. One major loss pathway of halocarbons is through chemical reactions with the atmospheric “scrubber” called OH. OH is difficult to measure and usually assumed to be constant with time. But some models suggest OH has increased, which implies increased emissions to match observed abundances. These halocarbons also dissolve into the oceans, where microbes may also metabolize them, but these processes are not included in current emission estimates. We show that if these halocarbons are being consumed in the oceans, this would also lead to an additional underestimation of human emissions. Confidence in the success in the Montreal Protocol and its Kigali amendment to reduce HFCs will therefore require a better understanding of both OH trends and ocean sinks, along with use of HFC and HCFC measurements. Verification of anthropogenic VOC emission inventory through ambient measurements and satellite retrievals
Improving the accuracy of the anthropogenic volatile organic compound (VOC) emission inventory is essential for reducing air pollution. In this study, we established an emission inventory of anthropogenic VOCs in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region of China for 2015 based on the emission factor (EF) method. Online ambient VOC observations were conducted in one urban area of Beijing in January, April, July, and October, which, respectively, represented winter, spring, summer, and autumn in 2015. Furthermore, the developed emission inventory was evaluated by a comprehensive verification system based on the measurements and satellite retrieval results. Firstly, emissions of the individual species of the emission inventory were evaluated according to the ambient measurements and emission ratios versus carbon monoxide (CO). Secondly, the source structure of the emission inventory was evaluated using source appointment with the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model. Thirdly, the spatial and temporal distribution of the developed emission inventory was evaluated by a satellite-derived emission inventory. According to the results of the emission inventory, the total anthropogenic VOC emissions in the BTH region were 3277.66 Gg in 2015. Online measurements showed that the average mixing ratio of VOCs in Beijing was approximately 49.94 ppbv in 2015, ranging from 10.67 to 245.54 ppbv. The annual emissions for 51 of 56 kinds of non-methane hydrocarbon species derived from the measurements agreed within ±100 % with the results of the emission inventory. Based on the PMF results and the emission inventory, it is evident that vehicle-related emissions dominate the composition of anthropogenic VOCs in Beijing. The spatial correlation between the emission inventory and satellite inversion result was significant (p<0.01) with a correlation coefficient of 0.75. However, there were discrepancies between the relative contributions of fuel combustion, emissions of oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs), and halocarbons from the measurements and inventory. To obtain a more accurate emission inventory, we propose the investigation of the household coal consumption, the adjustment of EFs based on the latest pollution control policies, and the verification of the source profiles of OVOCs and halocarbons.
Observations of Greenhouse Gases as Climate Indicators
Humans have significantly altered the energy balance of the Earth’s climate system mainly not only by extracting and burning fossil fuels but also by altering the biosphere and using halocarbons. The 3rd US National Climate Assessment pointed to a need for a system of indicators of climate and global change based on long-term data that could be used to support assessments and this led to the development of the National Climate Indicators System (NCIS). Here we identify a representative set of key atmospheric indicators of changes in atmospheric radiative forcing due to greenhouse gases (GHGs), and we evaluate atmospheric composition measurements, including non-CO2GHGs for use as climate change indicators in support of the US National Climate Assessment. GHG abundances and their changes over time can provide valuable information on the success of climate mitigation policies, as well as insights into possible carbon-climate feedback processes that may ultimately affect the success of those policies. To ensure that reliable information for assessing GHG emission changes can be provided on policy-relevant scales, expanded observational efforts are needed. Furthermore, the ability to detect trends resulting from changing emissions requires a commitment to supporting long-term observations. Long-term measurements of greenhouse gases, aerosols, and clouds and related climate indicators used with a dimming/brightening index could provide a foundation for quantifying forcing and its attribution and reducing error in existing indicators that do not account for complicated cloud processes.
Measurement report: Ambient volatile organic compound (VOC) pollution in urban Beijing: characteristics, sources, and implications for pollution control
The increasing ozone (O3) pollution and high fraction of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in fine particle mass has highlighted the importance of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air pollution control. In this work, four intensive field measurements of VOCs during winter of 2018 (from 1 December 2018 to 17 January 2019), spring (15 April to 27 May), summer (17 June to 13 July), and autumn (22 September to 27 November) of 2019 were conducted at an urban site in Beijing to characterize VOC sources and their contributions to air pollution. The total mixing ratio of the 95 quantified VOCs (TVOC) observed in this study ranged from 5.5–118.7 ppbv with the mean value of 34.9 ppbv. Alkanes, OVOCs, and halocarbons were the dominant chemical groups, accounting for 75 %–81 % of the TVOC across the sampling months. The molar ratios of VOCs to NOx indicated that O3 formation was limited by VOCs during the whole sampling period. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis showed that diesel vehicle exhaust, gasoline vehicle exhaust, and industrial emissions were the main VOC sources during both the O3-polluted and PM2.5-polluted months. On the basis of O3 formation impact, VOCs from fuel evaporation and diesel exhaust, particularly toluene, xylenes, trans-2-butene, acrolein, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, 1-butene, and 1-hexene, were the main contributors, illustrating the necessity of conducting emission controls on these pollution sources and species to alleviate O3 pollution. Instead, VOCs from diesel exhaust as well as coal and biomass combustion were found to be the dominant contributors to secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP), particularly the VOC species of toluene, 1-hexene, xylenes, ethylbenzene, and styrene, and top priority should be given to these for the alleviation of haze pollution. This study provides insights for the government to formulate effective VOC control measures for air pollution in Beijing.
Pollution halo impact in context of productive capacities, energy poverty, urbanization, and institutional quality
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) represents a substantial development strategy spearheaded by China. Its central aim is to foster connectivity across a vast geographical area that includes countries spanning Asia, Europe, and Africa. This project played a pivotal role to develop the region on the one side and also raised serious environmental concerns on the other side. There is extensive literature explored the various dimensions affecting the environment in BRI partner countries but there is hardly any study examining the impact of productive capacities, energy poverty, FDI, urbanization, and institutional quality on CO2 emission in the BRI region. Moreover, pollution halo impact is also explored so this study used panel data of 52 nations engaged in the BRI covering time span of 2001–2022 by applying OLS, Difference GMM, System GMM, Cross sectional-ARDL techniques. The results suggest that enhancing productive capacities, FDI and institutional quality significantly reduces carbon emissions in the region, while energy poverty, urbanization and economic growth is linked to higher carbon emissions. Moreover, ‘pollution halo effect’ is proved because of adoption of eco-friendly technologies through foreign corporations lead to reduction in carbon emission. The study advocates for policy measures that emphasize the promotion of productive capacities, the utilization of renewable energy sources, the adoption of practices regarding sustainable urban development, the implementation of efficient institutional structure, and inflow of eco-friendly technology through FDI.
Natural short-lived halogens exert an indirect cooling effect on climate
Observational evidence shows the ubiquitous presence of ocean-emitted short-lived halogens in the global atmosphere1,2,3. Natural emissions of these chemical compounds have been anthropogenically amplified since pre-industrial times4,5,6, while, in addition, anthropogenic short-lived halocarbons are currently being emitted to the atmosphere7,8. Despite their widespread distribution in the atmosphere, the combined impact of these species on Earth’s radiative balance remains unknown. Here we show that short-lived halogens exert a substantial indirect cooling effect at present (−0.13 ± 0.03 watts per square metre) that arises from halogen-mediated radiative perturbations of ozone (−0.24 ± 0.02 watts per square metre), compensated by those from methane (+0.09 ± 0.01 watts per square metre), aerosols (+0.03 ± 0.01 watts per square metre) and stratospheric water vapour (+0.011 ± 0.001 watts per square metre). Importantly, this substantial cooling effect has increased since 1750 by −0.05 ± 0.03 watts per square metre (61 per cent), driven by the anthropogenic amplification of natural halogen emissions, and is projected to change further (18–31 per cent by 2100) depending on climate warming projections and socioeconomic development. We conclude that the indirect radiative effect due to short-lived halogens should now be incorporated into climate models to provide a more realistic natural baseline of Earth’s climate system.
