Czech defence minister rejects calls for resignation over foreign missions
2009
[Report by \"ada\": \"CSSD Is Waiting for Topolanek To Deal With Foreign Missions\"] According to [Jan Hamacek], the CSSD wants to speak particularly about the Czech participation in Afghanistan. However, he did not confirm yesterday whether the CSSD would support the modified proposal for missions, which assumes, among other things, that the government would send only 480 people, instead of 645, to the ISAF [International Security Assistance Force] in Afghanistan. \"I have not seen the proposal,\" Hamacek said, even though he certainly has an idea of what it contains. According to Hamacek, the prime minister should not repeat the mistake made at the end of last year, when the Assembly failed to reach an agreement and missions were not approved, because the government needs 101 active votes for their deployment.

Czech paper says 10 opposition MPs to vote for foreign military missions
2009
If the party's binding vote is abolished, Miroslav Svoboda (CSSD), deputy chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Defence Committee, is ready to vote in support of the missions. According to Svoboda, about 10 deputies in the CSSD deputies' group are in favour of the missions. \"If the commitment [to vote against the mission] in the form of the binding resolution is abolished, about 10 people from our caucus will support the missions. I will be very happy to vote for the missions,\" Svoboda told [Pravo]. According to [Jan Hamacek], the government material meets the CSSD's demands half way, which he sees as the reason for the change in his party's approach to the missions. \"I will most likely back the missions,\" said Antonin Seda (CSSD), deputy chairman of the Defence Committee. According to Lubomir Zaoralek, the CSSD shadow minister of foreign affairs, his party's objections to the Afghanistan mission continue, despite its decision to allow its deputies to vote freely on the issue. The Social Democrats would like to know, for example, what sort of a political goal the operation pursues. Nevertheless, the CSSD Board passed a resolution, according to which the Defence Ministry's revised proposal concerning the missions, which the government will discuss on Monday, \"essentially accepts the CSSD demand to limit the Czech Army's participation in Afghanistan\".
