Background The report of the Lancet Commission on medicine, Nazism, and the Holocaust, released in November 2023, calls for this history to be required for all health professions education, to foster morally courageous health professionals who speak up when necessary. Main body The report was released a month after Hamas’ October 7 invasion of Israel, with the accompanying massacre of over 1200 people, taking of civilian hostages, and gender-based violence. These acts constitute crimes against humanity including genocide. Post-October 7, war in Gaza resulted, with a legitimate objective of Israel defending itself within international law. The authors discuss an accompanying Statement to the report condemning Hamas crimes and denouncing the perpetrators’ use of their own civilians as human shields, including in healthcare facilities, and with the Hamas attack unleashing immense and ongoing suffering in Israel and beyond. With some exceptions, the medical literature shows a marked absence of condemnation of Hamas atrocities and includes unsubstantiated criticisms of Israel’s military. A significant surge in global antisemitism including on university campuses since October 7, 2023, has occurred; and health professionals, according to the Commission, have a special responsibility to fight antisemitism and discrimination of all kinds. In this context, the authors discuss the controversy and criticism regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion education programs (“DEI”) including such programs failing to protect Jews on campuses, especially as the U.S. President Biden’s “The U.S. National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism,” released in May 2023, calls for the inclusion of issues of antisemitism and religious discrimination within all DEI education programs. The authors support an evidence-based approach to the Hamas massacre, its aftermath and its relevance to health professionals both within medicine and their global citizenship, including refuting the international community accusations and anti-Israel libel. Conclusions The report of the Lancet Commission on medicine, Nazism, and the Holocaust has striking relevance to the Hamas massacre of October 7, 2023 and its aftermath. This is further conveyed in an accompanying Statement, that describes the report’s implications for contemporary medicine, including: 1) provision of skills required to detect and prevent crimes against humanity and genocide; (2) care for victims of atrocities; (3) upholding the healing ethos central to the practice of medicine; and (4) fostering history-informed morally courageous health professionals who speak up when necessary.

This article examines memory and monuments in the science fiction Star Trek franchise as a lens for understanding commemoration technologies and how futuristic visions of memorials anticipated real ones, especially during times of conflict. To understand the cultural reciprocity of sci-fi television and contemporary commemoration of war and trauma, we investigate the interactive website produced by the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, Kan, titled Kan 7.10.360, which commemorates the victims of the 7 October 2023 Hamas massacre of civilians, soldiers, and policemen in Israel’s Gaza Envelope region. The 7.10.360 website employs advanced technologies to create what we identify as a digital “counter-monument.” By applying the concept of metamemorial science fiction relating to the Shoah, investigating its victims’ commemoration and examining the globital turn in memory work, we demonstrate that the Kan project realizes digital mnemonic practices engaged in Star Trek. We argue that the renowned series performs and anticipates three aspects of globital memory work and novel digital commemoration, also prevalent in the Kan 7.10.360 website: the personalization of memory using images; televisual testimony or documentation that mediates personal experience; and the display of objects that symbolize quotidian aspects of the victims’ lives.

Robinson-Divine reflects on the tensions inherent in Zionism and the processes of establishing the Israeli state and nation. She points out that those tensions had boiled over in the months preceding October 7, 2023 in the form of the \"judicial overhaul\" that was attempted by the Netanyahu government and the mass demonstrations that brought tens of thousands of Israelis out into the streets over a period of months. Israel was in crisis before October 7th. For at least a number of months leading up to the Hamas massacre that took place that day, it was clear that this was not only a political or a judicial crisis, specific to particular aspects of Israeli life, but rather a crisis in the very meaning of Israel and Zionism; indeed, there was already a creeping sense that we were living a critical moment in modern Jewish history. But October 7th expanded and deepened the crisis in unimaginable ways. One dimension of our post-October 7th reality, in other words, is a fusion of numerous preexisting quandaries into an overarching sense of ground-shaking tremors that profoundly impact not only Israel itself and much of the Jewish world; that not only pose what at least at times appear to be existential challenges to the post-1945, post-1989 world order in which some triumph of liberal democracy seemed all but self-evident.

The present article offers a critique of postcolonial theory, a perspective often applied to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Critiques of Israel today tend to frame the Hamas-led October 7th massacre in terms that either excuse or justify it. In this article I provide an overview of Palestinian terrorism and argue that it is the main driver behind Israeli policies, \"a context of the context.\" The issue of terrorism in today's dominant postcolonial discourse is either completely absent or portrayed as a discursive manipulation, used by Israel to justify the oppression of Palestinians. Contrary to the well-known and well-studied reality of terrorism, postcolonial researchers purposefully present Israeli actions as a \"contextless context\" for the attack. Finally, the paper leverages the \"context\" concept within a Gramscian perspective, to discuss the interests, power, and resources behind the production of post-colonial knowledge. Framed as \"organic intellectuals\" embedded in a \"historical bloc\" such scholars weave together the interests of Western-Leftist parties and Political Islam, Iran, Qatar, Russia, and China into a fabric that applies academic justification for warmongering.
