Candidates
2016
Commentators from a broad range of perspectives have been at pains to explain Donald Trump's transition from billionaire businessman to populist presidential candidate. This article draws on cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and rhetorical theory to argue that the success of Trump's candidacy in the 2016 Republican primary was in part due to its value as comedic entertainment. We examine the ways that Trump's unconventional political style, particularly his use of gesture to critique the political system and caricature his opponents, brought momentum to his campaign by creating spectacle. Post-structuralist and neo-Marxist scholars have asserted that late capitalism values style over content: Trump took this characteristic to new heights. The exaggerated depictions of the sociopolitical world that Trump crafts with his hands to oppose political correctness and disarm adversaries accrue visual capital in a mediatized twenty-first-century politics that is celebrity driven.

The Marvelous Bookcase: Yang Jiong's \Fu on the Bookcase for Reading While Lying Down\
2023
Yang Jiong ... (650-ca. 694), though hailed both by his contemporaries and later generations as one of the \"Four Elites of the Early Tang,\" has yet to receive due scholarly attention. This article contributes to the study of Yang Jiong by examining his \"Fu on the Bookcase for Reading While Lying Down\" (\"Wodu shujia fu\" ... . It demonstrates how the poet displays his literary genius by skillfully employing various allusions, using self-deprecating humor for assertive self-display, devising close echoes among different parts, and building an extremely well-balanced structure, written in verse of an elaborately parallel style. More importantly, he cleverly crafts a double text so that both the physical bookcase and he himself, the \"mental bookcase,\" become the dual subjects of the fu. The interplay between the bookcase, the poet, and his self-representation also contributes to the wider discussions of material culture, social norms, and literary expression.

American literature
2010
The Reading List annually recognizes the best books in eight genres: adrenaline (which includes suspense, thriller, and adventure), fantasy, historical fiction, horror, mystery, romance, science fiction, and women's fiction. In this deeply disturbing novel, the Brotherhood of Mutilation, a cult that gains wisdom through amputation, kidnaps a maimed detective and forces him to investigate the murder of a cult leader. Through spare language, a noir sensibility, and macabre humor, Evenson crafts a compulsively readable nightmare that asks, \"How do you know the moment when you cease to be human?\" Readers may also enjoy Will Elliott's Pilo Family Circus, Stephen King's Misery, and J. G. Ballards's Crash.

Woodworking Hobbies Master this tounge-in-cheek technique
1998
\"I want to make a stick with one end sharpened. The stick should be about 4' long. I want to put a point on one end, preferably the end that points down. It should be able to penetrate the earth deeply enough to stand on its own. Anyone have any plans?\" \"The best way to sharpen a stick is the way it was done a hundred years ago by REAL craftsmen: use a Stanley #33 1/3 stick-sharpening plane. Of course the Stanley #33 1/3 isn't as good as the Record #007, but those are extremely rare --- only two were ever made and I own them both (I got them at a garage sale). \"The first thing you need to do is lap the sole of the stick sharpening plane. Since the sole isn't flat, you'll need a special jig. I like to use the horn of a 2-year-old mountain goat coated with tripoli abrasive, but in a pinch a 3-year-old goat will do.

Hooked on hooking

\"That's because of me texture and use of other materials creating the illusion of faces coming to life,\" said another visitor at the show. \"I could spend hours drifting from one hooked rug to another. Maybe that's why so many patients seem so content to wait!\"
