For Atlantic City hookers, money trumps risk
2006
On Pacific Avenue, [Alison Connell] was the center of attention as she leaned on a jitney-bus pole. Her natural good looks are rare on the track. At 5 feet 10 with a slim frame, blue eyes, blond hair and cheeks dusted with sparkly blush, Connell seemed to belong in a wholesome television ad rather than on a strip populated with pimps and drug dealers. Yaiyuma and the other prostitutes call Yaiyuma -- whose smooth face is painted with a rosy blush and pastel eyeshadow -- a woman. Coarse, unkempt curls peek out beneath a white do-rag -- something rarely worn by women. But her snug, yellow, navel- exposing women's top and thigh-hugging jeans made it clear that Yaiyuma wanted only customers who craved femininity. Yaiyuma, who said she has a cosmetology license, left her Asbury Park, N.J., home months ago to \"make money out here.\"

Pregnancy in 50s raises age-old questions
2004
The news that a Georgia woman - 59 years old and a great- grandmother - is pregnant with twins after her tubes came untied is more than fodder for water cooler conversations. The pregnancy of Frances Harris - and the recent birth (by in vitro fertilization) of twins to Aleta St. James, 56, of New York City - raises the touchy question of how old is too old to have children. Society already operates under some unspoken, if fading, reproductive norms, like the one that frowns on teen parents. Study after study proves that kids born to teen moms are more likely to drop out of school and become teen parents themselves. For women like Harris, who became pregnant without medical assistance, the issue is murkier. She thought a tubal ligation took 33 years ago. Obviously, it didn't. Who can say that her pregnancy isn't part of God's larger plan?
