Family Diversity and Hybrid Entrepreneurship: A Family Embeddedness Perspective
2025
How does family diversity affect the choice of hybrid entrepreneurship? The effect of family dynamics has received little attention in research on the mode of entry into entrepreneurship. Building on the family embeddedness perspective, we hypothesize that the diversity of family households at surface (i.e., age and gender) and deep (i.e., work experience and education background) levels impacts the entrepreneur's adoption of a full-time or hybrid mode to start a new business. We further theorize that the effects of family diversity on entrepreneurial entry decisions are moderated by income stratification, which largely determines the ways entrepreneurs deal with family diversity. Using a sample of 1,320 individual-wave observations from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), our findings demonstrate that the choice of hybrid entrepreneurship is affected more by deep-level diversity than surface-level diversity among family households. Moreover, being from a high-strata family strengthens the relationship between surface-level diversity and the choice of hybrid entry, while weakening the effects of deep-level diversity. This study contributes to the ongoing discussion about family dynamics and entrepreneurship variations and provides important theoretical and practical implications.

Diversity and creativity in cross-national teams: The role of team knowledge sharing and inclusive climate
2018
Diversity literature has demonstrated negative effects of surface-level diversity and positive effects of deep-level diversity. How do two types of diversity among cross national team members influence team knowledge sharing and team creativity? The purpose of this study is to explore conditions that leverage the positive and restrain the negative effects of team diversity on team knowledge sharing, which leads to team creativity. We expect inclusive climate as the significant condition and knowledge sharing as the profound intervening mechanism between team diversity and team creativity relationship. We tested the hypotheses with data from a sample of 60 cross-national research teams from several universities in China. The results support the hypothesized relationships among inclusive climate, team knowledge sharing, and team creativity. Our findings contribute to the advancement of team diversity and team creativity literature, and their theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

2019
The purpose of this study is to explore inter-organisational dynamics in workforce diversity and effectiveness. Since the study is exploratory in nature, a qualitative approach was adopted to increase chances of gaining holistic insights into the phenomenon of team surface-and deep-level dissimilarity and team effectiveness in project delivery settings. The data was collected through interviews from construction practitioners/professionals from major construction project organisations and institutions who have been involved in construction project delivery. The results suggest that the extent to which surface-and deep-level dissimilarity affect team effectiveness depends on the collaborative activities of project team members within the inter-organisational relationship.

STORIES THAT SHAPED THE CENTURY / From the Pages of the Los Angeles Times; Disneyland Had Nowhere to Go but Up After Debut Series: STORIES THAT SHAPED THE CENTURY / From the Pages of the Los Angeles Times
1999
The news also escaped Walt's brother, Roy, who had borrowed against real estate, movies and life insurance to finance the park. Sitting outside in his Cadillac, admiring the throngs that crashed the invitation-only event with forged tickets, Roy Disney was told that kids who had been stuck in traffic jams were relieving themselves in the parking lot. As Roy smiled and Walt played to the cameras, high-heeled shoes sank deep into Disneyland's fresh asphalt, and food and drinks ran out. Long lines formed at toilets, visitors searched in vain for drinking fountains, and a power outage stalled Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Bunting hid unfinished rides; water washed across the overloaded deck of the Mark Twain steamboat. Advisors had urged Disney to lengthen the one-year construction period because of pre-opening snags. Sand beneath the Rivers of America sucked up water, and the attraction had to be lined with clay. Strikes disrupted schedules. Frontierland was rebuilt again and again to get the scale right. And still Disney insisted on the opening date he had promised.
