Toward Industry 4.0 in home appliance industry: challenges and future perspectives
PurposeConsidering the problems faced by the home appliance industry in Iran, such as the increase in waste, lack of information transparency and lack of traceability of manufactured products, etc. the companies in the home appliance industry are moving toward Industry 4.0 and have been prompted to use it. On the other hand, the adoption of Industry 4.0 is associated with challenges that may lead to the failure of the adoption project and the bankruptcy of home appliance manufacturers. This study identified the challenges in the implementation of Industry 4.0 on current status and provided suitable solutions to overcome the identified challenges.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, a review of the literature and background of Industry 4.0 identified the challenges that influence the adoption of Industry 4.0. To measure the current status of the identified challenges, the opinions of experts in the Iranian home appliance industry were used. To find solutions to the challenges in the adoption of Industry 4.0 in the Iranian home appliance industry, a fuzzy cognitive mapping and scenario design were used.FindingsThe results of this study show that to face the challenge of data sharing, skilled personnel should be effectively promoted among workers in the home appliance industry. The results of this study also show that the barriers to cooperation should be removed to reduce the impact of the IT Security Concerns challenge.Originality/valueThis paper is the first article that identifies the challenges and effective solutions for implementing Industry 4.0 in the home appliance industry.
The Price Effects of a Large Merger of Manufacturers: A Case Study of Maytag-Whirlpool
Many experts speculate that US antitrust policy towards horizontal mergers has been too lenient. We estimate the price effects of Whirlpool's acquisition of Maytag to provide new evidence on this debate. We compare price changes in appliance markets most affected by the merger to markets where concentration changed much less or not at all. We estimate price increases for dishwashers and relatively large price increases for clothes dryers, but no price effects for refrigerators or clothes washers. The combined firm's market share fell across all four affected categories, and the number of distinct appliance products offered for sale fell.
Getting the measure of the fourth industrial revolution: advantages and challenges of Industry 4.0 in the Turkish white goods industry
PurposeIndustry 4.0 (I40) is an open window of opportunity for Turkey, a developed country, to eliminate technological dependence and produce with maximum productivity. However, I40, which corresponds to the fourth wave of industrial revolutions, brings both opportunities and challenges. In this context, this study aims to reveal the foresight of managers in the Turkish white goods industry (TWGI) regarding the advantages and challenges of I40 and compare them with the literature.Design/methodology/approachThe Delphi method was used for the study. Data were collected from managers of companies that are members of the White Goods Suppliers Association (BEYSAD). Seventy managers from 55 companies participated in the first round, and 19 managers participated in the second round of Delphi.FindingsThe results show that the most frequently cited advantages are productivity/resource efficiency, data and information-enabled effectiveness/productivity, quality 4.0 and competitiveness/strategy. The most frequently mentioned challenges are financial resources/investment, employee qualification/training, technical/processual challenges and organizational transformation/leadership.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample was limited to the managers of the TWGI.Practical implicationsPlayers in similar ecosystems and policymakers should consider the advantages and respond to potential challenges when creating roadmaps, taking the necessary steps and positioning themselves in the marketplace. In particular, the TWGI – Turkey’s showcase in international markets – should consider the undeniable benefits of the I40 transition to increase innovation.Originality/valueThe findings for the first time highlight the advantages and challenges of I40 in an industry in Turkey, and they will benefit the TWGI, which is among the leaders in Turkey in terms of digital maturity and innovation in its journey to I40.
After-sales services network design of a household appliances manufacturer
After-sales services have become high-margin businesses that account for larger portions of corporate profits. Delivering the after-sales services is challenging as after-sales services supply chains are significantly different than production–distribution supply chains. The literature provides little guidance on the use of quantitative methods for after-sales services network design. We present a mixed integer linear programming problem formulation to determine warehouse locations, assign repair vendors to facilities and choose mode of transportation while minimizing the total network cost. We transform the large-scale real-life problem of a household appliances manufacturer into a smaller scale to solve optimally in reasonable time. Through a scenario-based approach, we evaluate different configurations of a decentralized network with choices of transportation mode. We test the sensitivity of the solutions. The total cost decreases with additional choices of transportation mode and only slightly increases with the next-day delivery policy while the network solution may change significantly.
