Utilization of Hazel (Corylus avellana L.) Wood Particles in the Production of Three-Layer Particleboards for Furniture and Interior Applications

Hazel wood (Corylus avellana L.) is widespread in Europe but remains underutilized in industry. This study evaluated its potential as a raw material for three-layer particleboards for furniture and interior use. Boards were produced with barked and debarked hazel particles at substitution levels of 0–100% with industrial pine. All variants fulfilled EN 312 P2 requirements. Hazel particles increased the bulk density (211 for debarked vs. 160 kg m−3 for pine wood), affecting handling. The modulus of rupture remained stable (11.5–12.7 N mm−2), while the modulus of elasticity declined with the hazel content but stayed above 1600 N mm−2. Internal bond strength improved markedly, reaching 1.63–1.66 N mm−2 at full substitution, and screw withdrawal resistance rose to ~200 N mm−1. However, dimensional stability worsened at 100% hazel, with higher thickness swelling and water absorption, especially for debarked material. Boards from fully debarked hazel also showed reduced core density to below 80% of the nominal density, potentially influencing bonding. The findings indicate that up to 50% hazel substitution is feasible without performance loss, while full replacement requires optimization of pressing and adhesives. Hazel wood thus represents a promising, sustainable alternative to conventional species, supporting more diversified raw material use in particleboard production.

Evaluation of Hazel-Derived Particleboard as a Substitute for Conventional Wood-Based Composites

This study investigated the potential of hazelnut wood (Corylus avellana L.) as an alternative raw material in the production of single-layer structural particleboards. Boards with a target density of 700 kg m−3 and thickness of 13 mm were manufactured using varying substitution levels (5%, 10%, 25%, 50% and 100%) of hazel wood particles relative to industrial pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) particles. Phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin was used as the adhesive at a 15% resination rate. Mechanical and physical properties, including modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), internal bond (IB), screw withdrawal resistance (SWR), water absorption (WA), and thickness swelling (TS), were evaluated according to relevant European standards. Density profiles (DP) were also assessed. The results showed that while higher hazel content reduced bending strength (from 23.3 N mm−2 for reference to 18.7 N mm−2 for 100% hazel wood board) and stiffness (from 3515 N mm−2 for reference to 2520 N mm−2 for 100% hazel wood board), most boards met standard mechanical requirements of EN 312 for P3 and P5 boards. Notably, IB strength improved significantly at higher hazel content, with the 100% variant (2.07 N mm−2) exceeding the reference board (1.57 N mm−2). Screw withdrawal resistance also increased with hazel wood addition (from 235 N mm−1 for reference to 262 N mm−1 for 100% hazel wood board), linked to its higher density. However, water resistance and dimensional stability worsened with increasing hazel content, particularly in bark-containing particles, leading to excessive thickness swelling after prolonged water exposure. Thickness swelling after 24 h of soaking rose from 16.36% for the reference board to 20.13% for the 100% hazel wood board. Density profiles revealed a more uniform internal structure in boards with higher hazel content. Overall, hazelnut wood shows promise as a partial substitute for pine in particleboard production, especially at moderate substitution levels, though limitations in moisture resistance must be addressed for broader industrial application.

Keywords: Turkish hazel, Corylus colurna L., distribution, autecology, silviculture, climate change INTRODUCTION Climate-induced changes in forest ecosystem structure and species composition, particularly from recurring droughts, significantly alter interspecific competition, reduce biodiversity and stand stability, impair carbon sequestration, and result in long-term economic losses (Alfaro ег al., 2014; Schelhaas ef al., 2015; Kunz et al., 2018). The aim of this publication is to synthesize and present comprehensive knowledge on Turkish hazel, specifically focusing on its distribution, ecological characteristics, and silvicultural potential and competitive interactions in mixed stands in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, as well as its role in mixed forests under climate change pressures. An overview of the Tukish hazel productivity, wood quality and uses, silvicultural characteristics, and response to climate change is provided based on the available literature and field survey findings. According to the Euro+Med (2006+), it is present in Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, the Russian Federation (Caucasus), Serbia (including Kosovo), and both the European and Asian parts of Turkey (Fig. 1).

ContextEcological networks are often designed based on the degree of suitability and permeability of land cover classes, as obtained by estimating the statistical relationships between occurrence data and classes coverage using habitat suitability models (HSMs). Considering only the classes coverage, but not their spatial arrangement, frequently prevents HSMs from correctly identifying nodes and connectivity elements.ObjectivesWe propose a new approach in the design of ecological networks starting from the relationship between occurrence data and both land cover classes coverage and spatial arrangement, as calculated for different simulated species perceptions of the landscape (SSPLs, corresponding to different combinations of classes alternatively assuming the role of nodes, connectivity elements, or matrix).MethodsThe approach consists of comparing the ability to explain the observed species occurrence of both the nodes coverage and the connectivity degree provided by both nodes and connectivity elements, calculated for each SSPL. The better performing SSPL will provide information about the land cover classes that should be considered in designing an ecological network for the species, as well as their role in the network.ResultsWhen applied to the Hazel Dormouse in an agricultural landscape in northern Italy, the method proved effective and allowed us to identify woodlands and hedgerows as nodes, and poplar cultivations, biomasses and reforestations as connectivity elements.ConclusionsThe proposed method can be adopted to identify nodes and connectivity elements for virtually every species sensitive to fragmentation, and has important practical implications when integrated in landscape management plans developed to guarantee ecological connectivity.

Blue mould, caused primarily by Penicillium expansum, is a major threat to the global pome fruit industry, causing multimillion‐dollar losses annually. The blue mould fungus negatively affects fruit quality, thereby reducing fresh fruit consumption, and significantly contributes to food loss. P. expansum also produces an array of mycotoxins that are detrimental to human health. Management options are limited and the emergence of fungicide‐resistant Penicillium spp. makes disease management difficult, therefore new approaches and tools are needed to combat blue mould in storage. This species profile comprises a comprehensive literature review of this aggressive pathogen associated with pomes (apple, pear, quince), focusing on biology, mechanisms of disease, control, genomics, and the newest developments in disease management. Biology A wide host range necrotrophic postharvest pathogen that requires a wound (e.g., stem pull, punctures, bruises, shoulder cracks) or natural openings (e.g., lenticel, stem end, calyx sinus) to gain ingress and infect. Toxins Patulin, citrinin, chaetoglobosins, communesins, roquefortine C, expansolides A and B, ochratoxin A, penitrem A, rubratoxin B, and penicillic acid. Cytoplasmic Volume Modulates Spindle Size During Embryogenesis

Rapid and reductive cell divisions during embryogenesis require that intracellular structures adapt to a wide range of cell sizes. The mitotic spindle presents a central example of this flexibility, scaling with the dimensions of the cell to mediate accurate chromosome segregation. To determine whether spindle size regulation is achieved through a developmental program or is intrinsically specified by cell size or shape, we developed a system to encapsulate cytoplasm from Xenopus eggs and embryos inside cell-like compartments of defined sizes. Spindle size was observed to shrink with decreasing compartment size, similar to what occurs during early embryogenesis, and this scaling trend depended on compartment volume rather than shape. Thus, the amount of cytoplasmic material provides a mechanism for regulating the size of intracellular structures.
