Hell is only a word. The reality is much, much worse
While the genre of space horror is generically defined as simply space-based horror, there exist specific tropes that can be used to identify representative works. Among these are: (i) a relatively small ensemble cast, (ii) many of whom die over the course of the story; (iii) a secret corporate/political/military agenda and (iv) physical and psychological stresses due to the arduous process of space travel and related isolation. A subset of space horror adds metaphysical elements, drawing connections to Hell, more specifically a liminal space that Victor Turner terms the “betwixt and between.” As the region around and within the event horizon of a black hole fits this definition (like a classical view of Hell, trapping its victims for all eternity), it suggests that black holes could play an important role in Hell-related space horror. This paper analyses three works of hellish space horror – the much-maligned Disney film The Black Hole (1979), the cult-classic film Event Horizon (1997), and the “Impossible Planet/The Satan’s Pit” arc of new series Doctor Who (2006) – and demonstrates how they are representative of the use of black holes as fantastical gateways to supernatural (or at the very least super-natural) experiences with Hell.

This paper examines the crisis of children whose psyche has been disrupted by a psychic vampire’s thought world, by focusing on the impact of the thought world on innocent victims in the 2013 non-linear narrative novel, NOS4A2, by an American horror writer, Joe Hill. It strives to scrutinize the shared fantasy world and its impacts on normal people’s psychological state, the trauma it causes to the mental state, and the transformation of innocent kids into vampire states. As per M.H. Abrams’s Heterocosm perceptions, the person consciously creates an alternate world that merely geographically imitates the physical world. Through this novel, the writer aims to explore the person’s imaginative or thought world and how his supernatural powers will affect the psychological state of normal human beings. The study also examines the psychic vampire, Charlie, a 148-year-old man who sucks the children’s souls to remain young and live forever. The study portrays the terrifying kidnapping that happened in the United States during the period of 2000s.

La sociedad surcoreana actual se caracteriza por una alta competitividad que está causando presiones en los jóvenes, así como tensiones sociales entre distintas generaciones. Las características de esta realidad social, que ya advertía Han Byungchul en algunos de sus ensayos como La sociedad del cansancio (2010), están siendo abordadas también por la literatura desde el punto de vista de la ficción. En este sentido, mientras que algunas obras hacen una interpretación desde la ciencia ficción especulativa, como Mil azules de Cheon Seonran, y otras, como Pyobaek de Chang Kangmyeong, lo hacen desde un realismo con tintes distópicos, novelas como Contraataque a los 30 de Sohn Wonpyeong sitúan al lector en la realidad de una protagonista corriente, que se esfuerza por navegar la tendencia social que exige a todos destacar para encontrar su lugar en la sociedad. Este trabajo analiza la representación de las dinámicas de competitividad y brecha generacional que constituyen el motor narrativo de Contrataque a los 30 de Sohn Wonpyeong, con especial énfasis en el concepto de kkondae, calificativo empleado por los jóvenes para definir a una generación anterior autoritaria, condescendiente y resistente a los cambios culturales y de valores.
Within the Walls of Hell
The Land of Eternal Discomfort is a place where no one wants to go. It is hot and dirty. One is sure to experience depression once there and sleep is a luxury no longer attainable in that place. Unbelievable though it may seem one enters the Land of Eternal Discomfort by choice. It is a place destined for those who did not live a righteous life according to the Creator. The kind of life one lives down below determines where they go thereafter. For the seven characters in this play, the love of power and the hatred for those different and inferior to themselves leads them to choose a life of luxury gained through deceit, theft, adultery and murder. Against all the Creatorís commands, they chose to live lives of self-gratification ignoring their obligations to their fellow man. The choice they made was for their lives down there but they will forever live with the consequences in their lives thereafter. Life down there does not last forever and the characters are destined to meet the Messenger at which time the choice will have already been made. When you finally meet the Messenger, pray that he is ushering you into the Land of Eternal Happiness because in the other place you are doomed forever. In the Land of Eternal Discomfort the gate can only open to let someone in. It cannot open to let anyone out. Once you are in there you can never get out again.
