COVID-19 cases were climbing in Pennsylvania, and we were sent home not knowing if or how we would return for the last two months of classes. After those initial two weeks, the state's decision was made to keep us virtual for the rest of the year. Students are similar in their quick and righteous disregard for those who are wasting their time. But here's the thing about a lesson plan: it's just a boundary, a map to follow. Sure, there are topographical lines to trace and note, but what happens between those lines is the beautiful part of teaching. The unknown, the amalgamation of curriculum and critical thinking and humanity. There's a mystery that gets to be uncovered in each lesson. There's something to learn and to discover.

Existentialist's Traits in Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha: An Ontological Inquiry
The paper aims at seeking existentialist’s traits in the lead character of Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha by explicating the fundamental tenets of existentialism. Indubitably, Hesse’s portrayal of Siddhartha is highly influenced by Buddhist philosophy, therefore the paper will take a recourse to some concepts of Buddhist philosophy to establish the existentialist’s traits in Siddhartha. However, the paper does neither claim of any influence of existentialism on Hermann Hesse nor it establishes any impact of Buddhism on existentialism.

Hermann Hesse’s concept of world literature and his critique on Chinese literature
Hermann Hesse drafted in 1927 an outline of world literature in his article Eine Bibliothek der Weltliteratur (A Library of World Literature) in which he took Chinese literature as one of the important sources. In 1935, from German translation of historical novel Water Margins (水浒传) Hesse gave a response to Goethe’s ideal of world literature and defined it as the last common spirit “through empathetic translation, to broaden and enrich one’s own language and literature”. Chinese literature playing this landmark role in Hesse’s world literature is not groundless, but closely related with his continuous reading, commenting on a variety of Chinese literature for 30 years in his early career. He praised the perfect form of Chinese poetry, and ascribed Chinese drama to a treasure of stage art. He argued Chinese short narration with the magic to transform freely and broke through reality and illusion. Hesse also evaluated three Chinese romantic fictions The Fortunate Union (好逑传), The Wonder of the Second-Plum (二度梅) and The Plum in the Golden Vase (金瓶梅). He commented twice on the masterpiece Dream of the Red Chamber (红楼梦), initially criticized it was not a classic because it embodied no Chinese wisdom, only afterwards reaffirmed that it was a masterpiece depicting “a mood of decline and fatigue”. Hesse’s critique on Chinese classical literature not only provides a vision of literary communication between the East and the West, it is also closely related with his cultivation of world literature, which greatly enriches the construction of “world literature” in the early twentieth century.

ذئب البوادي هي عبارة عن رؤية نفسية عميقة جدا، حيث يقوم هيرمان هيسه بتحليل نفسي للمثقف المكتئب، والسوداوي في تلك المرحلة .. حيث أنه يحلل تحليلا عميقا، أقرب لكونه تحليل عالم نفس متخصص، إلا أن ذلك بقالب روائي جميل، ليس من السهل أن يصفه أي روائي .. ذئب البوادي تتحدث عن الإنسان المثقف الذي ينتمي إلى الإنسانية فقط، والذي يقف ضد التيار في ذلك العالم الذي كان يحبذ القوة، ويحبذ الانتصارات على الأعداء، كانت هنالك حروب أم لم تكن، حيث أن \"ذئب البوادي\" كان هو ذلك الشخص الذي يقف مضح بكونه مصب الهجوم والنقد الساخر بل والجارح .. وفي الوقت نفسه، تتحدث \"ذئب البوادي\"، عن ذلك الإنسان الذي تختلط فيه كل الهويات الإنسانية، حيث أنه فرد مكون من ذئب وإنسان في الوقت نفسه .. الذئب له غرائزه التي يحاول أن يفرضها، والإنسان له غرائزه التي يحاول أن يفرضها أيضا، فيقوم \"هاري\" بمحاولة وصف الصراع الذي ينتج داخله بشكل دقيق، بل ويقوم باستنتاجات عميقة جدا، ويصل في نهاية مزعجة، للنهاية الأسوأ، وهي تمني الموت بل ومحاولة الإقدام عليها.. وحين ذلك، يلتقي ذئب البوادي، \"هاري\"، بتلك الشابة التي تفهمه جيدا، وتغير فيه بشكل كبير، وهي التي تحاول أن تقوم باستئصال سوداويته الحالكة نحو هذا العالم .. فيتغير الكثير في شخصية ذئب البوادي.

Doğu Düşünce Sisteminin Hermann Hesse Romanları Üzerindeki Etkisi
Hermann Hesse, Batı dünyasını eleştirel bir kavrayışla ele alan Batı’ya ve Batılı bireyin kimlik sorununa Doğu düşünce sistemine yönelerek çözüm arayan yirminci yüzyılın en önemli yazarlarından biridir. Hermann Hesse’nin romanlarındaki Doğu anlatısı, Doğulu Öteki’de teselli bulma arzusundan ya da sıradan bir emperyalist dürtüden ziyade Batı’daki kriz ortamı ve Batı’nın gidişatı hakkında bilgi vermesi açısından derin bir anlam içermektedir. Bu çerçevede çalışma, Doğu düşünce sisteminin Hermann Hesse’nin romanları üzerindeki etkisini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada, Hermann Hesse’nin eserleri karakterler ve tematik yönden incelenmeye tabi tutulmuştur. Eserlerde, Batı modernliğinin manevi yönünün insan doğasına ayak uyduramadığı ve materyalist değerleri yükselişe geçirdiğine dikkat çekilmektedir. Bu yönde, Doğu’nun sunduğu değerlerin, hem bireysel hem de kolektif açıdan insan doğasına daha uygun olduğu vurgulanmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, Hermann Hesse’nin romanlarında Doğu düşüncesi, Batı’nın ilerleme idealine duyulan şüphe ve ahlaki çöküşü karşısında sentezlenmesi gereken bir alternatif çözüm yolu olarak görülmektedir. Parçalanmış Batılı bireyin içinde bulunduğu çıkmazı aşabilmesi ve bütünlüğünü sağlayabilmesi için Doğu düşünce sisteminde olduğu gibi maneviyata ve deneyime yer verilmesi ile insanın doğayla ilişkisinin yeniden gözden geçirilmesi gerektiği ortaya konmaktadır.

Hesse : the wanderer and his shadow
Hermann Hesse's stories inspired nonconformity and a yearning for universal values to supplant the political fanaticism tearing Europe apart. Initially, critics thought his work inaccessible to Americans, but the counterculture of the 1960s--and subsequent generations of admirers--emphatically proved the opposite. Gunnar Decker weaves together previously unavailable sources to offer a unique interpretation of the life and work of Hermann Hesse. Drawing on newly discovered correspondence between Hesse and his psychoanalyst Josef Lang, Decker shows how Hesse reversed the traditional roles of therapist and client, and rethinks the relationship between Hesse's novels and Jungian psychoanalysis. Readers who can now explore Hesse's correspondence with Thomas Mann and Stefan Zweig--the latter recently unearthed--will come away with a better understanding of the author's profound sense of alienation from his contemporaries.-- Provided by publisher

Hermann Hesse and L: Two narratives of sciatica
In the literary novel
Kurgast (1925), translated in English as
A guest at the spa, the Nobel laureate Hermann Hesse describes the treatment of his own sciatica.
We compare Hesse's description of 85 years ago with a transcript of an interview with a contemporary patient with sciatica. The narratives of both texts were analyzed.
Both narratives start with hope on full recovery. Later this changes into the realization that one needs to accept that some symptoms are irreversible and will be permanent.
Although there currently is better understanding, diagnostic imaging and treatment of sciatica, a strong similarity in narrative type between the two stories was observed. Literary narratives can reflect every day practice, and probably can also be used to give better insight in dealing with diseases.
