Blog: Review of: Uwe Fleckner and Peter Mack, The Afterlife of the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg: Volume 12 (Vortrage Aus Dem Warburg-Haus), Berlin/Boston: De Gruyter 2015
This volume celebrates the eightieth anniversary of the Warburg Library’s transportation from its home in Hamburg to London covering the years from its move to the late fifties when Ernst Gombrich published Art and Illusion. There are useful and entertaining personal memoires, essays based on the archives and three papers based specifically on Gombrich. The review raises questions that emerge from the collection and argues for more work to be done on the subject as an important episode in intellectual history.
The British Museum scrubbed the Elgin Marbles 'clean' in an extraordinary act of vandalism that it kept secret for 60 years Shocking new claims will astound art lovers
The Greek ambassador, Vassilis Zafiropou-los, told The Mail on Sunday last week: '[William St Clair]'s disturbing revelations constitute an additional argument in favour of Greece's case for the return of the Marbles to where they belong.' The story begins early one Sunday morning in September 1938 when John Forsdyke, director of the British Museum, took a stroll through the basement workshops of his world-renowned institution to check on the cleaning of the Marbles. For nearly 60 years the full story of what happened to the Elgin Marbles was hidden from public scrutiny. Although reports leaked out at the time that the Marbles had been 'overcleaned', these were denied and records of the inquiry were secreted away in the bowels of the British Museum. [Elgin] sold the Marbles to the British Museum in 1816 for GBP 35,000. In 1936-38 the Duveen Gallery was built to hold the Marbles, which were sent for cleaning with catastrophic results.
