Calvary Christian girls drop three at hoops Holiday Classic
Leesburg reached the 2013-14 Class 6A regional finals and is undefeated this season. It took Leesburg some time to get going and it was a 1-0 contest until the 4:25 mark of the first quarter when Calvary's Kiara Rodriguez hit two free throws to give the Lions their only lead. Calvary's best chance for a win came in the third game when it battled Interlachen for three quarters and trailed by five at 44-39. The Lions closed it to a three-point game, 51-48, with plenty of time remaining, only to give up a 7-0 run to the Rams. Interlachen won 60-53. Most of Calvary's problems in the first game resulted from an inability to break defensive pressure. Oddly, the Lions did it well in the first quarter and marksmanship from the 3-point arc by Drew Good, Perez and Rodriguez, who combined for 12 of the team's 18 points. Rodriguez finished with 13 for the game.

SRC rate increase queried
I HAVE received and paid my Southland Regional Council rates demand for 1999. Myrates have increased by 25 percent since 1998. In the same time the capital valueof my property has decreased by $27,000, which by coincidence is about 27 percent. This is an excellent reason for the amalgamation of the four Southland councils andrid ourselves of this parasitic bureaucracy, a luxury that ratepayers can no longerafford. They have to go!George F Hodge Gore Asked to comment, the regional council'sdirector of corporate services Graham Alsweiler replies:Rates for our council increasedthis year by $125,612 overall, or 2.5 percent on average.

GROWING TOWN CROWDING IN AROUND CHURCH
Busy Route 66, a former dirt trail for early churchgoers' horse- drawn buggies, is about to be widened, starting at the intersection the church anchors, and extending through the heart of the business district. Three bank branches, a McDonald's, clusters of shops and professional offices and town hall are all within shouting distance of Bethlehem. Of more immediate concern to Bethlehem is the impending work on Route 66, which practically abuts its front steps. The state Department of Transportation paid the church $7,100 for a strip of frontage that will bring the roadway even closer, forcing the relocation of the church's sign. Glenn Wood of East Hampton, a retired Pratt engineer who joined the Bethlehem congregation in 1956, laments the increased traffic and noise he fears will accompany the improvements. Members enter and exit the church parking lot from Route 66, and they worry that more traffic will make access even more difficult.

RENEWAL OF COOPERATION BISHOPS OF THREE DENOMINATIONS TO SIGN REVISED COVENANT SUNDAY
Signing the document during the 4 p.m. ceremony will be Bishop Margaret G. Payne of the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; Bishop Andrew D. Smith of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut; and Bishop Daniel A. Hart of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Norwich. Two Episcopal suffragan bishops, the Rt. Rev. James E. Curry and the Rt. Rev. Wilfrido Ramos-Orench, also are expected to attend. Written by an interchurch committee called LARC (for Lutherans, Anglicans and Roman Catholics), the document is similar to what was approved in 1997. The covenant calls for the churches to, among other things, pray regularly for one another and for church unity; strive to remove any obstacles to unity \"while mutually supporting and preserving our respective traditions according to the mandates of the Gospel\"; actively pursue continued dialogue and explore opportunities for sharing the various faith traditions; and join in worship services, especially during the week of prayer for Christian unity, Pentecost, Lent and Thanksgiving.
