Marshall profiles Alice Hoffman, a writer. Aside from writing, Hoffman makes a parallel investment in what matters by giving generously, of her time and energy and money. By donating the advance for a 1999 story collection called Local Girls, she initiated The Hoffman Breast Center at the Mount Auburn Hospital, a Harvard University teaching hospital, to consolidate care for breast cancer patients. The Dovekeepers is her latest novel.
