Happy Holidays--Animated!
Since the early 20th century, animated Christmas cartoons have brightened the holiday season around the world--first in theaters, then on television. From devotional portrayals of the Nativity to Santa battling villains and monsters, this encyclopedia catalogs more than 1,800 international Christmas-themed cartoons and others with year-end themes.
The Writing and Development of the Holiday Romantic Comedy Count on Christmas
Holiday films, specifically those in the Hallmark Christmas Movie (HCM) sub-genre, find an audience because they provide predictable storylines, cliché characters, and familiar settings. Writing the screenplay for Count on Christmas was an attempt to create a fresh view of this unsurprising category of holiday movies. Research for this script included reviewing recent HCMs, watching classic films in the romantic comedy genre, and reviewing studies that provide insight regarding why viewers are drawn to predictable films. Different sources of inspiration for the script were also examined, and the success of the different elements incorporated in Count on Christmas, including breaking the fourth wall and setting the protagonist as an antihero, were outlined. The writing process involved several drafts of an outline and a complete re-write of the first. Ultimately, I produced a script that captured the spirit and familiar pieces of an HCM but with a different comedic tone and film style than the sub-genre typically depicts.
Germany. Germany holidays
Most of the holidays in Germany are religious in nature. Some states also have holidays that are unique to their region. Explore the most popular holiday, Christmas, which features celebrations that bring families together and many Christmas fairs throughout the country.
Days to remember. Episode 4, Presidents' Day
From George Washington's birthday to a day honoring all U.S. Presidents, learn how Presidents' Day became a national holiday and its significance today.
Days to remember. Episode 3, Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day traces its roots from ancient pagan rituals to 17th-century German settlers in Pennsylvania. This February 2nd tradition has evolved into a fun, modern celebration.
Mexico. Mexico customs
The Mexican calendar is filled with special events and holidays, both national and religious. In fact, there isn't a month all year when Mexicans don't celebrate at least one holiday. Christmas is the most important holiday in Mexico. Mexicans celebrate with exuberant partying and festivals, and many people take off from work for the last two weeks of December. Explore other key celebrations including Virgen de la Soledad, Noche de los Rabanos, Aio Nuevo and Dia de los Santos Reyes, Carnival, Dia de la Constitución, Cinco de Maya, Dia de los Muertos, and others throughout the year.
HORROR AND DEATH
In 2013, the Walt Disney Company submitted an application to trademark “Día de los muertos” (Day of the Dead) as they prepared to launch a holiday themed movie. Almost immediately after this became public Disney faced such strong criticism and backlash they withdrew their petition. By October of 2017 Disney/Pixar released the animated film Coco. Audiences in Mexico and the U.S. praised it's accurate and authentic representation of the celebration of Day of the Dead. In this essay, I argue that despite its generic framing, Coco mobilizes many elements of horror in its account of Miguel's trespassing into the forbidden space of the dead and his transformation into a liminal figure, both dead and alive. Specifically, with its horror so deftly deployed through tropes and images of borders, whether between life and death or the United States and Mexico, Coco falls within a new genre, the border horror film.
Improvement of Methods and Devices for Multi-Parameter High-Voltage Testing of Dielectric Coatings
Currently, the high voltage testing method is widely used to detect pinholes and porosity defects in dielectric coatings. However, most modern coatings also have requirements for the minimum allowable coating thickness. Conducting tolerance tests on the thickness of dielectric coatings concurrently along with monitoring integrity within a single technological process appears promising. Additionally, mitigating the impact of various interfering parameters is crucial. This paper conducts a theoretical and experimental examination of spark formation processes in both gas and dielectrics. This analysis takes place during the identification of both through and non-through defects in dielectric coatings on conductive substrates. The principles of selecting the test voltage for the investigated dielectric coatings, considering the need to detect both through defects and inadmissible thinning, are theoretically and experimentally justified. It is suggested to utilize a probabilistic approach for evaluating the detectability of the mentioned defects. It is demonstrated that, when the dielectric strength of the coating is known, it is feasible to identify both through and non-through defects in coatings with a calculated probability under a specified test voltage. The conditions of occurrence of partial discharges in the process of testing are investigated, and measures to suppress their influence on the inspection results are proposed. The influence of the substrate surface roughness on the magnitude of the breakdown voltage during testing is considered.
High or low season?
PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the moderating impacts of seasonality on the effectiveness of new product commercialization strategies in short-lifecycle markets. The authors contextualize their theory in the vast and culturally significant entertainment industry sector and contrast the effects between independent films and big budget movies.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses an econometric modeling approach.FindingsThis study finds that unlike new films by well-resourced studios, which must launch in a high season for best performance, independents can generate more revenue in low seasons under certain conditions. The study shows how seasonality moderates the effectiveness of new films’ commercialization strategies and how new product outcomes are different for small independent products than for big-budget productions with regards to distribution duration, advertising expenditure and product characteristics.Research limitations/implicationsThis research extends the literature on launch timing, which examines various strategic tradeoffs. In contrast with the few extant studies whose concern is sensitizing to the effects of seasonality (Siqueiraet al., 2016), this research treats seasonality as an exploitable opportunity that can be strategically factored into business planning for small producers. Accordingly, this is the first study to theoretically and empirically investigate the moderating relationship between seasonality, marketing decisions, product characteristics and performance.Practical implicationsTo achieve useful specificity, the study constructs its discussion around the highly seasonal entertainment industry sector. The study shows that seasonality moderates the effectiveness of new films’ commercialization decisions and that the strategic outcomes are different for small independent products than for major studio productions in particular.Originality/valueIn contrast with extant research whose concern is sensitizing to the effects of seasonality, our research treats seasonality as an exploitable opportunity that can be strategically factored into business planning. Accordingly, ours is the first study to theoretically and empirically investigate the moderating relationship between seasonality, marketing decisions, product characteristics and performance.
Trade war, national sentiment and consumption substitution of cultural products: evidence from China’s film market
The causal relationship between the US–China trade war and consumption substitution of domestic films for American films in China is examined in this study using the difference-in-difference model. The daily screening film data in China’s 33 major cities in 2018 are employed. The results suggest that after the US–China trade war, the average attendance rate of foreign and American films has declined by 24.75% and 19.11%, respectively, compared with domestic films. As indicated by the above-mentioned finding, the trade war has led to a shift in the consumption of US films. The consumption substitution effect weakens on holidays for specific film types. People in cities exhibiting a higher economic and trade development level and a larger share of the tertiary industry are more inclined to purchase foreign cultural products. Accordingly, the negative effect of the trade war on American films is offset to some extent. As revealed by the result of this study, the negative effects are reduced with time.
