Home futures : living in yesterday's tomorrow
The home of the future has long been a topic of fascination in popular culture and an intriguing prospect for designers, and the 20th century offered up countless visions of the future of domestic life, from the aspirational to the radical. Whether it was the dream of the fully mechanized home or the notion that technology might free us from the home altogether, the domestic realm was a site of endless invention and speculation. But what happened to those visions? Are the smart homes of today and patterns of use in the sharing economy the future that architects and designers once predicted, or has the home proved resistant to radical change? 'Home Futures: Living in Yesterday's Tomorrow' explores different approaches to reinventing domestic life, tracing the social and technological developments that have driven change in the home. The first comprehensive survey of the 20th century's aspirational, radical and futuristic visions of the home, this richly illustrated publication showcases a range of ideas and plans for the future from the prescient to the fantastical that designers produced as they imagined new ways of living at home and on the move, independently and collectively, with more and with less.
Exploring Consumers’ Purchase Intention on Energy-Efficient Home Appliances: Integrating the Theory of Planned Behavior, Perceived Value Theory, and Environmental Awareness
Extensive energy consumption has incurred global environmental problems such as climate change. Home appliances are highly used products and consume large amounts of energy. When widely applied, energy-efficient home appliances promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Therefore, people’s intention to purchase these home appliances merits research attention. In this study, a comprehensive model was developed using the theories of planned behavior, perceived value, and environmental awareness. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey, to which 448 valid responses were returned, and analyzed using partial least squares. The results indicated that consumers’ intention to purchase energy-efficient home appliances was positively affected by their attitude toward purchasing the appliances. Such attitude was significantly and positively affected by functional value, price value, environmental value, and environmental awareness. However, consumers’ attitudes toward purchasing these appliances were not significantly affected by emotional value or social value. Suggestions were proposed on promoting consumer intention to purchase these home appliances according to the research results.
Pierre Robin Sequence and 3D Printed Personalized Composite Appliances in Interdisciplinary Approach
This paper introduces a complex novel concept and methodology for the creation of personalized biomedical appliances 3D-printed from certified biocompatible photopolymer resin Dental LT Clear (V2). The explained workflow includes intraoral and CT scanning, patient virtualization, digital appliance design, additive manufacturing, and clinical application with evaluation of the appliance intended for patients with cranio-facial syndromes. The presented concept defines virtual 3D fusion of intraoral optical scan and segmented CT as sufficient and accurate data defining the 3D surface of the face, intraoral and airway morphology necessary for the 3D design of complex personalized intraoral and extraoral parts of the orthopedic appliance. A central aspect of the concept is a feasible utilization of composite resin for biomedical prototyping of the sequence of marginally different appliances necessary to keep the pace with the patient rapid growth. Affordability, noninvasiveness, and practicality of the appliance update process shall be highlighted. The methodology is demonstrated on a particular case of two-year-old infant with Pierre Robin sequence. Materialization by additive manufacturing of this photopolymer provides a highly durable and resistant-to-fracture two-part appliance similar to a Tübingen palatal plate, for example. The paper concludes with the viability of the described method and material upon interdisciplinary clinical evaluation of experts from departments of orthodontics and cleft anomalies, pediatric pneumology and phthisiology, and pediatric otorhinolaryngology.
What Drives China’s Exports: Evidence from a Domestic Consumption Expansion Policy
The relationship between domestic demand and exports has remained the focus of the academic world for a long time. A large body of research has confirmed the promotion effect of international trade on domestic demand. This study uses a difference-in-difference (DID) model to estimate instrumental variables. In addition, we have discussed that China’s “Home Appliances to the Countryside” policy as an instrumental variable for domestic demand as it affects exports through the two-stage least squares (2SLS) method. The empirical results show that expanding domestic demand can significantly promote exports. The internal mechanism is that the subsidy policy stimulates domestic demand, which improves total factor productivity (TFP). TFP could enhance the international competitiveness of enterprises effectively. Furthermore, this study negates the channel that prices decline in promoting export. A series of robustness test policies that promote domestic demand can significantly boost exports. This study provides evidence for the solid complementary relationship between domestic demand and exports in the home appliance industry.
How Can Multinational Enterprises Effectively Implement Local Consumer-Oriented Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Strategies? A Multi-Perspective Study on the Differences in CSR Response Mechanisms between Chinese and Japanese Consumers
Fully understanding the local populace’s awareness and reactions to corporate social responsibility (CSR) with a strong emphasis on sustainability is crucial for multinational enterprises (MNEs) to design and implement effective localized CSR strategies. This study centers on the home appliance industry and utilizes semi-structured interviews and questionnaire surveys as the research methods to construct and validate a model called “Attribution–Perception–Satisfaction–Loyalty (APSL)” that visualizes consumer responses to CSR information, particularly in the context of sustainability. We further explore the distinctions in the mechanism between Chinese and Japanese consumers, considering cultural, economic, and institutional aspects related to sustainability. The findings reveal that beyond the perceptions related to value-driven motivations, there are pronounced differences between Chinese and Japanese consumers in stakeholder-driven, self-interest-driven, and strategy-driven motivations, which can impact sustainability initiatives. Notably, Japanese consumers are more significantly affected by the impact of CSR on their satisfaction and loyalty. This study not only enriches and expands the theoretical framework of CSR and consumer responses to CSR but also offers insights and recommendations for MNEs in China and Japan to help overcome the self-reference criterion and implement local CSR marketing strategies with a strong emphasis on sustainability.
Credit Risk Assessment of Supply Chain Financing with a Grey Correlation Model: An Empirical Study on China’s Home Appliance Industry
Supply chain finance (SCF) plays an increasingly important role in global enterprise competition. The credit risk accompanying SCF has attracted the attention of the government, enterprises, and academia. However, with the absence of data and inaccurate information, traditional risk assessment methods are frequently failed to assess the credit risk in SCF, especially for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In this study, a grey correlation model is introduced and applied to the SCF risk assessment process for 15 firms in the Chinese home appliance industry with 15 performance indicators that represent profitability, solvency, operational capability, and development capability. The empirical study displays the operability and effectiveness of the grey correlation model, which is superior to traditional methods in the supply chain financial risk assessment.
Machine learning based customer churn prediction in home appliance rental business
Customer churn is a major issue for large enterprises. In particular, in the rental business sector, companies are looking for ways to retain their customers because they are their main source of revenue. The main contribution of our work is to analyze the customer behavior information of actual water purifier rental company, where customer churn occurs very frequently, and to develop and verify the churn prediction model. A machine learning algorithm was applied to a large-capacity operating dataset of rental care service in an electronics company in Korea, to learn meaningful features. To measure the performance of the model, the F-measure and area under curve (AUC) were adopted whereby an F1 value of 93% and an AUC of 88% were achieved. The dataset containing approximately 84,000 customers was used for training and testing. Another contribution was to evaluate the inference performance of the predictive model using the contract status of about 250,000 customer data currently in operation, confirming a hit rate of about 80%. Finally, this study identified and calculated the influence of key variables on individual customer churn to enable a business person (rental care customer management staff) to carry out customer-tailored marketing to address the cause of the churn.
A Novel Time-of-Use Pricing Based Energy Management System for Smart Home Appliances: Cost-Effective Method
Smart grids (SG) allow users to plan and control device usage patterns optimally, thereby minimizing power costs, peak-to-average ratios (PAR), and peak load demands. The present study develops a typical framework of a home energy management system (HEMS) for SG scenarios using newly limited and multi-limited planning approaches for domestic users. Time-of-use pricing (TOUP) is used to develop, handle, and manage the optimization problem properly. As a capable method for optimizing the proposed problem, this paper uses a robust meta-heuristic algorithm named wind-driven optimization algorithm (WDOA) and compares it to the other optimization algorithms in order to demonstrate its efficiency. In addition, it integrates a rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system with the system in order to show that all devices are cost-effective if managed properly. Eight diverse case studies are analyzed using a variety of time planning algorithms. The simulation results advocate for the quality and high performance of the proposed model by minimizing the total cost and managing energy consumption economically.
A Mathematical Model for Home Appliances in a DC Home Nanogrid
A mathematical model for nonlinear loads, that contains, in its design, a switching power supply is presented. The model was tested in home appliances operating in a Direct Current Home Nanogrid (DCHN). Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and LED lamps were used as nonlinear loads to study, through the model, the experimental results in the profile of ripple in voltage and current of the lamps. The profile of ripples, due to the home appliances, could be explained by the model, even in the simultaneous operation of two loads. Additionally, the effect of decreasing the ripple amplitude when an induction stove in standby mode was incorporated with the DCHN was analyzed.
From General to Company-Specific Ecodesign Strategies: Developing Guidelines for Eco-Efficient Product Design Across the Entire Product Portfolio of an Appliance Company
Increasing consumer awareness on significant environmental challenges, in addition to forthcoming regulations, is driving domestic appliance manufacturers to adopt an Ecodesign approach to more effectively and significantly reduce the environmental impacts along all of the life cycle phases of their products, minimising energy and material consumption, optimising the life of the product, facilitating recycling, facilitating disassembly, optimising material conservation/renewability, and minimising toxicity. This paper emphasises and discusses the significance of supporting this process by creating a company-specific handbook of guidelines and checklists to design low-environmental-impact products across an entire company’s appliance range. Checklists are design support tools intended to qualitatively assess whether, and to what extent, an Ecodesign guideline has been applied, enabling the evaluation of existing products or newly developed concepts, while also serving to guide and inspire sustainable design decisions. It is argued that these are effective tools in translating eco-efficient design into practice and guiding the whole of product development organisation through a knowledge-based approach. The Handbook of Guidelines to Design Low Environmental Impact Products is the result of a project commissioned by a home appliance company to the LeNSlab (research group on Design and System Innovation for Sustainability) of the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano, elaborated, after preliminary desk research, through a series of activities, interactions, knowledge exchanges, and operative workshops in cooperation with the company team of experts. The handbook contains 7 Ecodesign strategies, 27 sub-strategies, 157 guidelines, and related checklists, to be specific to such a level that they can effectively be applied to all types of company appliances.
