For Students, a Preview of What the Real World Holds
1990
''That's not fair,'' Miss Fisher protested, as she hugged a stuffed teddy bear closer to her chest and glowered at her teacher. ''What is SIDS, anyway?'' she demanded. The couple's homework assignment for Tuesday's class was to learn about sudden infant death syndrome, and Mr. [Michael Rossi] added: ''Don't forget to make the funeral arrangements. That will require some phone calls.'' The point system extends to the weekend, when students are never sure when or if Mr. Rossi will call, demanding to know where the children are and how they are doing. The real Hastings parents are now ''grandparents,'' asked to ''baby-sit'' on weekends, in case Mr. Rossi should call while the students take off for basketball games and parties. ''Is this really what it's going to be like?'' one parent mused recently after such a weekend. Taking the class seriously is initially difficult for some students. But the moment of truth comes when their ''children'' are l7-year-old high school students, and the problems Mr. Rossi presents include drugs, peer pressure, excess drinking and homework. ''These dilemmas have become the most controversial,'' he said. ''And those students who weren't serious suddenly say, 'Wow, this could be me.' ''
