Propane business: The Columbia Planning Commission recently approved a propane/butane storage facility at 360 S. Fourth St. Council voted to approve an $221,067 improvement escrow for Sterling Columbia Rail, detailing projected costs. [Leo Lutz] said the company has been working with emergency services to ensure the facility is constructed and operated safely.

Polk County Public Schools have continually reached Arts Achieve ! Model School status during [Frank Howes]' tenure, and the Polk County Public Schools were chosen in 2009 as the 21st annual recipient of the Kennedy Center's Alliance for Arts Education Network and National School Boards Association Award. The John F. Kennedy Center For the Performing Arts, located in Washington, D.C., named Polk for the award.

The department received Image Awards from the Florida Public Relations Association for two projects. The department's audio-visual presentation \"Give Them Somethin' To Talk About\" and public service announcements broadcast during National Teacher Appreciation Week both received Image awards. The public service announcements were broadcast on cable television, commercial radio and were also available on the school district's Web site. Lake Region High's Honor Choir, under the instruction of the school's Choral Studies director Robert Zahner, earned superior assessments from all judges in 2009-2010 in the district and the state Concert Music Performance Assessment (MPA). According to Lake Region records, this was the first time that the chorus earned superior marks from all judges at the state MPA. Zahner has been at Lake Region the last two years, coming from Lakeland's Lake Gibson Middle. [Melissa Konkol-Bennett] won a second place in the high school division of the Personal Financial Literacy category for her project on \"Exploring My Future Career.\" Sampson won a third place in the high school division of the Personal Financial Literacy category for her curriculum \"Nutritional Family Meal Planning on a Budget.\" [Antionette Wilcox] won third place in the middle school division category of Econ 101 for her project \"The Economic Quest for Chocolate.\"

Leacock officials look to hold line on taxes

Currently, local officials are considering a proposed budget of $874,214, up more than $66,800 from the $807,388 allocated last year. The 2007 budget, which includes approximately $894,000 in income, expects to take in $122,000 in property taxes, $60,000 in real-estate transfer taxes and collect $350,000 in earned-income tax from the state. According to the proposed budget, [Leacock] plans to spend $8,700 on winter-maintenance needs like snow plowing and road salt and $240,739 on general road-repair and maintenance projects. The budget also will put $20,000 into the township's equipment fund for future purchases.

\"By law, we have to set the rate for our own pensions. Then, we send in a report to the state giving them a rate based on this year's wages, plus the percentage we're going to apply to our pensions for next year,\" township secretary/treasurer Frank Howe said after Monday's meeting. According to Virginia Cornyn, a coordinator for municipal pensions and fire relief in the state's auditor general's office, what Leacock residents have to remember is this is not tax money - either state or local - that's going into municipal pension plans.
