Born in Saskatchewan, [Alice Hughes] came to Golden 40 years ago. Her daughter Shirley had opened the original Husky Restaurant and needed her mom's help. In 1970, Alice's daughter Shirley moved to Vancouver Island and Alice took over the Husky. She says she was only planning on staying two years when she arrived here because she had planned on returning to Kamloops. It was there she was going to be running another restaurant, but plans fell through. While her free time was sparse, Alice would spend it baking or knitting. Anytime there was a function going on that required pies or squares, Alice was ready to lend a hand- and her culinary skills.

While travelling in New Zealand [ALICE HUGHES] decided she wanted to learn a craft and enrolled on a jewellery making course run by a man called Ray Mitchell. Mr Mitchell made the 'One Ring' used in the blockbuster film trilogy, Lord of the Rings She said: 'I was totally inspired by the country - by the plants and the shells - everything is on a larger scale and I felt totally overwhelmed.'
