Flooded London: Sensory Lexica in The End We Start From by Megan Hunter
As London is flooded due to unprecedented rainfall that is caused by the negative consequences of climate change in Megan Hunter’s novel
, a journey of joy, loss, sadness, and homecoming begins. Whereas Hunter’s apocalyptic novel about a female Londoner escaping the flooded capital with her newborn baby has been successfully adapted into a film, her novel has, so far, attracted insufficient attention in the field of climate change fiction (cli-fi) studies and ecocriticism. Seeking to overcome the current research gap, this contribution presents a qualitative study whose aim is to shine light onto sensory lexica in Hunter’s novel
. The sensory lexica in the study are defined as lexical items that are involved in the manifestation and interpretation of such categories as hearing, smell, taste, touch, and vision. The study employs a qualitative methodology of identifying and classifying the sensory lexica in
in order to gain insight into the protagonist’s authentic experiences of the flooded London of the not-so-distant utopian future. Arguably, the sensory lexica in
may deepen the readers’ understanding of the protagonist’s feelings, emotions, and perceptions. The results of the qualitative analysis indicate that the sensory lexica in Hunter’s novel are skilfully employed in order to portray the protagonist’s encounters with the negative consequences of climate change in a realistic and, at the same time, relatable manner.

For more than 40 years, the radically subjective style of participatory journalism known as Gonzo has been inextricably associated with the American writer Hunter S. Thompson. Around the world, however, other journalists approach unconventional material in risky ways, placing themselves in the middle of off-beat stories, and relate those accounts in the supercharged rhetoric of Gonzo. Avian preparedness: simulations of bird diseases and reverse scenarios of extinction in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore

This article describes relations between humans, animals, artefacts, and pathogens in simulations of disasters, taking bird diseases in three Chinese sentinel posts as ethnographic cases. Drawing on distinctions between simulation, ritual, and play, it shows that the engagement of actors in the imaginary of simulations, which they describe as ‘realism’, reflectively reverses the oppositions between humans and nonhumans, active and passive, fiction and reality that shape ordinary life. Borrowing from the anthropology of hunting societies, it argues that simulations of bird diseases, considered as signs of future species extinction, rely on cynegetic techniques of power, in which humans and animals symmetrically shift perspectives, and not only on pastoralist techniques, in which humans are above the population they monitor and sometimes sacrifice. We wouldn't have known our own bodies. Hunter had started asking questions, saying the manual was out of date and we couldn't trust it, but I thought the opposite. What if the manual contained the secret to crossing the mountains? But yeah, I got where Hunter was coming from. He was bored. We were all so fucking bored. How film genres are a product of biology, evolution and culture-an embodied approach

The article describes how basic cognitive and emotional systems of the embodied brain are products of a long evolutionary history and how this determines the way in which the major film genres are constructed. It synthesizes research from evolutionary psychology and cognitive film studies, as well as moral psychology. It explains how the film experience is embodied: experienced not only cognitively but with the whole body and its interaction with the world. Also discussed is how the biological underpinning of genres are based on three major types of emotions: a group of reptilian emotions central to action and adventure; a group of mammalian emotions related to offspring of care; and separation panic/ grief. A special human development to enhance group living has expanded emotions of care to also underpin emotions linked to group living such as loyalty to tribe, aggression towards out-groups and submission to tribal hierarchy, central in war, sci-fi and fantasy films, and also emotions related to social rituals such as comedy, tragedy and musical. A discussion is also offered of how the historical development from hunter-gatherers via societies based on agriculture to the present post-agrarian society has moulded moral emotions; this is exemplified in relation to crime films. Finally, also considered is how age and gender influence genre preferences.
