Fill Rate
The direction fill rate is about space utilization. The three cases in this chapter illustrate that fill rate is an important packaging design direction for sustainable development. The cases consider sustainability impacts across the entire packaging system. Each case, though, has its own scope or approach that illustrates the impact of fill rate on the three pillars of sustainable development from an organization, product or packaging perspective. The cases are: detergent powder packaging; ice cream packaging; IKEA loading ledges. The first case demonstrates a well‐functioning and well‐designed packaging system, with a high volume of everyday products. The second case compares two different packaging design solutions for ice cream and discusses their impact on sustainabile development. The third real‐life case evaluates the sustainability outcome from a decade‐long implemention of a new unit load carrier throughout the global retailer IKEA's product range and supply network, from manufacturers via distribution centres to retail stores worldwide.
