Inside the nudge unit : how small changes can make a big difference
Adding a crucial line to a tax reminder brought forward millions in extra revenue; prompting people to become organ donors while paying for their car tax added an extra 100,000 donors to the register in a single year. Halpern heads up the UK government's \"Nudge Unit,\" the world's first government institution that uses behavioral economics to examine and influence human behavior, to \"nudge\" us into making better decisions. Here he shows you how to make better choices and improve your life.
Differences in architecture and performance between two subcanopy congeneric tropical tree species
We report architectural divergence between two congeneric tropical tree species coexisting in the same stratum which suggests different strategies: reducing selfshading and support costs, or maximizing light foraging. We found species-specific differential performance across light environments, suggesting that architectural differentiation could facilitate the coexistence of species with similar vertical habitat.

JNK signaling dominance in hyperthermia
2025
Hyperthermia is a promising anticancer treatment that induces heat stress, stimulating various signal transduction pathways to maintain cellular homeostasis. Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) link various extracellular stimuli with cytoplasmic and nuclear mediators through a three-tiered cascade of kinases, including MAPKs, MAP2Ks, and MAP3Ks. In mammals, three major groups of MAPKs have been characterized: extracellular signalregulated protein kinases (ERK), p38 MAPKs, and c-Jun NH₂-terminal kinases (JNK). Each group of MAPKs is heatactivated and exhibits distinct biological functions. However, the differences and advantages of the regulation of each MAPK with temperature changes remain unknown. Our results demonstrated that JNK was activated in a temperature-dependent manner, with degradation of the JNK phosphatases despite transient phosphorylation of ERK with induction of the ERK phosphatases. This brief insight deepens our current understanding of the deregulation of the ERK and JNK cascades in hyperthermia.
