Medieval Islamic Political Thought
2004,2005
This book presents general readers and specialists alike with a broad survey of Islamic political thought in the six centuries from the rise of Islam to the Mongol invasions. Based on a wide variety of sources, it seeks to bring out the enormous scope and high level of historical (and, in some cases, contemporary) interest of medieval Muslim thinking on this subject. The author aims to make Islamic political thought easier for modern readers to understand by relating it to the contexts in which it was formulated, analysing it in terms familiar to the reader, and, where possible, comparing it with medieval European and modern thought. Guiding the reader through this complex history on a tour of one of the great civilizations of the pre-modern world, the book brings out the fascinating nature of medieval Islamic political thought, both in its own right and as the background to political thinking in the Muslim world today. Key Features
* Written by one of the most renowned scholars in the field
* All concepts have been glossed and all persons, events and historical developments have been identified or summarised, both on first encounter and in the index (where the number of the page containing the gloss will be emboldened)
* Specialists are addressed in the footnotes; non-specialists are free to skip these and read an uncluttered text
Islamization and archaeology : religion, culture and new materialism
\"This fresh approach to the study of Islamization proposes an innovative conceptual framework that treats the subject as a particular case of cultural change. The aim of the volume is to make Islamization amenable to archaeological and historical analyses of changes in material conditions of life without forsaking the specific history of Islam. Islam and Islamization must be understood in their particular social context, but also in relation to the conditions that hold them together over large geographical and chronological expanses. Archaeologists and historians have considered Islamization from a range of different perspectives, from conversion to cultural change, though these studies have tended to be underpinned by a normativist conception of Islam. In contrast, José C. Carvajal López takes a hermeneutical stance, wherein Islam is the result of exploration, and adopts a New Materialist theoretical analysis to explore Islamization and its impact on identities, communities and their material culture. The consequences for the study of Islamization are examined through examples that include some of the author's own experiences. This innovative take on Islamization is not exclusively interested in the spread of the religion or of the polity, and therefore it overcomes the theoretical limits imposed by the concepts of religious conversion and ideological imposition. This book will appeal to scholars interested in associating cultural and religious change and, in particular, those working on Islam, whether within or outside the discipline of archaeology\"-- Provided by publisher.
Popular Religious Preaching as Informal Education and Its Impact on Medieval Islamic Culture
2024
This study examines popular preaching in medieval Islamic culture, which served as a form of mass education for the public. Public assemblies (majālis) and gatherings were organized by scholars on their initiative of scholars, or by rulers for various purposes. The assemblies took the form of a sermon (khuṭba), preaching (wa‘ẓ), da‘wa, dhikr with a Sufi shaykh, or as a part of a visit (ziyāra) to a shrine of a righteous person. Assemblies and gatherings were held in mosques, in the courts of rulers, or in public places. The goals of these gatherings depended on the desires of their organizers, the time and place in which they were held, and the religious or social events for which they were arranged. Therefore, the nature of gatherings tended toward religious preaching, the personal interest of the organizers, propaganda, political activities, critique and oversight, and sometimes as a form of celebration or leisure. By means ofthese assemblies, some leaders enhanced their status, as well as garnering greater publicity from among the general population. The gatherings displayed the level of knowledge among the educated and among the ‘ulamā’. In addition to the stated objectives of holding these assemblies, this study shows that the primary objective centered on the preserving of Islamic values and moral rules.

‘Islamic Culture’ textbook content and religious needs of literacy students
2022
The present study aimed to investigate the degree of adaptation of the 'Islamic Culture' textbook content to the religious needs of the literacy learners, using document and content analysis as the main research method. The statistical population for the document analysis included all texts related to the religious needs of the literacy learners, and the 'Islamic Culture' textbook was examined in the content analysis section. The research tools were composed of some forms and a content analysis checklist. Furthermore, the documents were analysed qualitatively, and the data from the content analysis were examined, using the descriptive indicators in the Shannon entropy for data analysis. The study results revealed that the conceptual framework of the religious needs among the literacy learners could be classified into three dimensions, namely; cognitive, emotional and functional, and then divided into several components. According to the expert opinions, there was no correlation between the 'Islamic Culture' textbook content and the dimensions of the religious needs of the literacy learners. The levels of attention to the religious needs in such learners in the 'Islamic Culture' textbook content was also not the same, so that the most emphasis had been laid on the cognitive dimension and the least weight was placed on the functional one. Contribution This study was to identify the dimensions and components of the religious needs of the literacy learners. For this purpose, three dimensions and 58 components were categorised for the religious needs, using document and content analysis as well as data collection tools for searching the related literature in books, journals, databases and websites.

Islam obscured : the rhetoric of anthropological representation
Ethnographers have observed Muslims nearly everywhere Islam is practiced. This study analyzes four seminal texts that have been read widely outside anthropology. Two are by distinguished anthropologists on either side of the Atlantic, Islam Observed (by Clifford Geertz in 1968) and Muslim Society (by Ernest Gellner in 1981). Two other texts are by Muslim scholars, Beyond the Veil (Fatima Mernissi in 1975) and Discovering Islam (by Akbar Ahmed in 1988). Varisco argues that each of these four authors approaches Islam as an essentialized organic unity rather than letting 'Islams' found in the field speak to the diversity of practice. The textual truths engendered, and far too often engineered, in these idealized representations of Islam have found their way unscrutinized into an endless stream of scholarly works and textbooks. Varisco's analysis goes beyond the rhetoric over what Islam is to the information from ethnographic research about what Muslims say they do and actually are observed to do. The issues covered include Islam as a cultural phenomenon, representation of 'the other', Muslim gender roles, politics of ethnographic authority, and Orientalist discourse.
