PC.127 Using immersive simulation as a learning tool for neonatal specialist medical trainees and nursing staff

Simulation is already becoming an integral part of medical training and of assessment of competencies. Initially the majority of simulation has been based on individual case simulation, concentrating on clinical knowledge and practical skills. In the Yorkshire and Humber deanery immersive simulation was introduced in 2011 to support transition of paediatric SHOs to registrar level. It involved a 4-bedded simulated ward and theatre. Immersive simulation allows for a more realistic approach, where ward round, prioritisation, decision-making and multi-disciplinary skills can all being assessed. This allows for an emphasis on human-factors and communication skills to be developed in a way that small scale simulation cannot achieve. Within the deanery’s simulation strategy it was recognised that there was limited simulation being offered to neonatal trainees. We proposed to initiate an immersive simulation course for this group of trainees. This would be made up of a 4-bedded simulated neonatal intensive care unit and resuscitation bay. However, using immersive simulation in this setting is a more complex process. Challenges we faced were; availability of further equipment, for example incubators and ventilators; the ability to use these in conjunction with mannequins and the integration of nursing staff to the simulation. We present the process that we went through in order to set up regional immersive neonatal simulation for trainees on the neonatal grid and those with a special interest. We comment on the inclusion of nursing candidates along side medical candidates. We discuss the challenges we faced and the solutions that worked in our setting.

University business incubators as a tool for accelerating entrepreneurship: Theoretical perspective
Purpose - This paper aims to analyze the link between universities and business incubators (BIs) and to determine how students, scientific researchers and entrepreneurs can benefit from this linkage. It creates an environment in which everyone can help the other to put their new ideas, special skills and abilities into new businesses. In other words, the traditional universities' role has changed and entrepreneurial universities are now needed to redirect new knowledge for economic development through BIs. Design/methodology/approach - This paper adopts an analytical descriptive methodology approach to describe the basic features of the data by using the descriptive research design. This research is based on examining a model provided by the author concerning boosting the entrepreneurial aspects and outcomes through university business incubators (UBIs) based on wide theoretical and empirical case studies. Also, the functional structural approach is used to investigate the relationship between two variables as UBIs are considered a new unit that has functions and structures to create an added value to universities and the society as a whole. Findings - The educational system should create a favorable environment that enables young people to develop their mindset from employees to employers, and to prepare them to improve skills and knowledge to create jobs. UBI is the recent aspect of the BI evolution where the research outcomes are linked with the industry and development. This relationship between these entities will provide success to its stakeholders. Social implications - Many incubators around the world are supported by universities. Others are making initiatives to link up with universities and higher education institutions to get the revenues and returns from its academic nature. Lately, university incubators became a type of incubator evolution and more supportive for entrepreneurs than other types of incubators. Originality/value - The contribution of this study is to explain how UBIs succeeded to tie the results of scientific research with economy and development through entrepreneurial activities to accelerate and realize entrepreneurship strategies.

A social capital approach to the development of sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems: an explorative study

The entrepreneurial ecosystem, an emerging and developing theoretical stream, has the potential to expand our understanding of entrepreneurship. In previous research, this concept has been studied from the university perspective, but it has not yet been introduced in the field of entrepreneurial support. Additionally, the growing number of university business incubators has led to increasing research interest in the entrepreneurial support field. This research project seeks to develop a more robust understanding of sustainable universitybased entrepreneurial ecosystems through an in-depth analysis of an essential entrepreneurial support element: the university business incubator. Our exploratory research study draws on 48 face-to-face interviews with key members of university-based entrepreneurial ecosystems to explore the operation of three cases through the lens of social capital theory. Our analysis suggests that all three social capital dimensions are relevant to the effective functioning of the university-based entrepreneurial ecosystem and contribute to its sustainability: applying the structural dimension of social capital enhances access to resources; addressing the cognitive dimension strengthens relationships among ecosystem members; and investing in the relational dimension enhances complementarity and trust while the ecosystem evolves. Thus, the interaction of these dimensions may further contribute to the sustainability of the university-based entrepreneurial ecosystem. Enhancing the development and application of the three social capital dimensions as an aspect of proactive management of the entrepreneurship ecosystem has the potential to improve outcomes for ecosystem members.

Business incubators and accelerators: a co-citation analysis-based, systematic literature review

A long and rich research tradition exists on the phenomenon of business incubators since this kind of venture support institution first emerged. One can observe an increasing heterogeneity of incubation beyond the traditional mainstream focus on regional development and university-based incubators. In the last decade, in particular the phenomenon of accelerators as a particular form of incubators received increasing research interest. A few literature reviews started summarizing the field, but left some important issues unanswered. This systematic review study contributes to this effort deriving current themes and a research agenda. We find that open innovation and social capital theory increasingly complement the resource-based view as frameworks to understand business incubation. Moreover, the phenomenon of private corporate incubators and accelerators gains traction, both in entrepreneurship theory and practice.

The Management of Business and Technology Incubators in Brazil

Objective: This article presents effective guidelines for the management of business and technology incubators in the Brazilian context. Method: The research covers an analyzed context of 56 incubators located in different regions of the country. The recommended practices were identified based on a thorough analysis of the information available on institutional websites and the incubators' documents. Results and Conclusion: The study focuses on three key areas: the selection process, the activities carried out by the incubator, and the marketing and dissemination strategies. As far as the selection process is concerned, practices such as the participation of partners in the evaluation of projects, the division of the process into careful stages, the analysis of the internationalization potential of the ventures, and the evaluation of the behavioral profile of the entrepreneurs involved stand out. About the activities promoted by the incubator, it is worth highlighting the offer of courses aimed at business development, the stimulation of innovation through technological support, the sharing of resources such as university laboratories, and the creation of collaborative networks between entrepreneurs. In terms of marketing and dissemination strategies, recommended practices include creating a bank of opportunities for startups, and using the university's institutional media as a platform for visibility and access to online resources to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and information. Research Implications: This study offers a valuable contribution to the understanding of the successful strategies adopted by Brazilian incubators in promoting entrepreneurship and innovation, providing a solid guide for the effective management of these important centers of entrepreneurial and technological development in the country. Objetivo: Neste artigo, são apresentadas diretrizes eficazes para a gestão de incubadoras de empresas e tecnológicas no contexto brasileiro. Método: A pesquisa abrangente um contexto analisado de 56 incubadoras localizadas em diversas regiões do país. As práticas recomendadas foram identificadas a partir da análise minuciosa de informações disponíveis nos sites institucionais e documentos das próprias incubadoras. Resultados e Conclusão: O estudo se concentra em três áreas fundamentais: o processo de seleção, as atividades desenvolvidas pela incubadora e as estratégias de marketing e divulgação. No que diz respeito ao processo de seleção, destacam-se práticas como a participação de parceiros na avaliação dos projetos, a divisão do processo em etapas criteriosas, a análise do potencial de internacionalização dos empreendimentos e a avaliação do perfil comportamental dos empreendedores envolvidos. No que tange às atividades promovidas pela incubadora, merecem destaque a oferta de cursos voltados para o desenvolvimento empresarial, o estímulo à inovação por meio de suporte tecnológico, o compartilhamento de recursos como laboratórios universitários e a criação de redes colaborativas entre empreendedores. No âmbito das estratégias de marketing e divulgação, as práticas recomendadas incluem a criação de um banco de oportunidades para startups, a utilização das mídias institucionais da universidade como plataforma de visibilidade e o acesso a recursos online para facilitar o intercâmbio de conhecimento e informações. Implicações da Pesquisa: Este estudo oferece uma valiosa contribuição para a compreensão das estratégias bem-sucedidas adotadas pelas incubadoras brasileiras na promoção do empreendedorismo e da inovação, proporcionando um guia sólido para a gestão eficaz desses importantes centros de desenvolvimento empresarial e tecnológico no país.
