Organised wellbeing : proven and practical lessons from safety excellence
\"Wellbeing is now at the top of almost everyone's agenda and many technical books have been published on the topic. Increasing organisations are understanding that it's a win-win that can boost profits or simply make sustainability viable. Organised Wellbeing: Proven and Practical Lessons from Safety Excellence seeks to present, in a user-friendly way, all of the key wellbeing themes. It views these through the lessons learnt from safety excellence because, at present, UK safety is world-class but, frankly, wellbeing seldom is. In any organisation, culture is even more important than strategy and tactics, and training is just the base of a process in which facilitation and embedding of key behaviours and mind-sets is the essential element. Practical and coordinated processes, not initiatives, are required. This book, therefore, seeks to show how all the aspects of wellbeing, both organisational and personal, are inexorably interconnected. From an organisational perspective, approaches need to address the truth that 'good work is good for you'. This book, also an individual guide to thriving with passion, compassion, humour and style, is essential reading for health and safety, occupational health and HR professionals at all levels. It is also highly recommended for all managers and staff who seek to maximise their potential and that of their colleagues\"-- Provided by publisher.

Health and safety in contemporary Britain : society, legitimacy, and change since 1960
\"This book analyses the perceived legitimacy of health and safety in post-1960 British public life. Since 2010 health and safety has appeared to be in crisis, being attacked by press, politicians and public alike, but are these claims of crisis accurate? How have understandings of health and safety changed over the past 60 years? By exploring the history, culture, and operation of health and safety in contemporary Britain, this book provides a new assessment of an understudied, but surprisingly far-reaching, part of the British political and social landscape. Combining archival research with focus group, social survey and oral history testimony, the book examines the historical background to health and safety, how health and safety has been enacted in public and in the workplace, the impact of changing economic, occupational and social structures on the operation of health and safety, and the conflicts and interests that have shaped the area.\"-- Back cover.

Transformative propaganda : opening the archives of the British Safety Council
\"What do seat belts, life jackets and anti-jack knife technology have in common? They were all the subjects of campaigns run by the British Safety Council since its inception in 1957. James Tye, its charismatic founder and leader for nearly 40 years, created the British Safety Council to bring about a transformation. In 1957, hundreds of workers were killed in accidents and James marshalled every conceivable technique to save lives, including PR stunts, lobbying for better laws and, crucially, what he called 'propaganda', in the form of posters and other communication tools. In 2014, a long-lost collection of posters, papers and letters were found gathering dust in a warehouse in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. The British Safety Council, wanting to mark its 60-year history, decided to preserve the collection and commissioned historian Mike Esbester to trace the history of health and safety in Britain from the late 1960s through the posters and photographs of the time. The real gem of the archive are the historic health and safety posters, designed by Stuart Dorman. 'They may not be high art, but they capture the spirit of the times,' says Mike Esbester. \"The posters reflected the social and political events taking place in the country. Their designs, often funky and flamboyant, featuring the latest fashions, celebrities and ideas, effectively promoted health and safety messages.\" Transformative Propaganda: Opening the Archives of the British Safety Council also offers a fascinating and vivid insight into the social and political realities of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The book contains a wealth of historical documents, press cuttings, correspondence, photographs and posters (including the famously controversial one featuring the image of the Pope in a condom)\"-- Provided by publisher.
