Databases and Information Systems V
The Eighth International Baltic Conference on Databases and Information Systems took place on June 2-5 2008 in Tallinn, Estonia. This conference is continuing a series of successful bi-annual Baltic conferences on databases and information systems (IS). The aim is to provide a wide international forum for academics and practitioners in the field of databases and modern information systems for exchanging their achievements in this area. The original research results presented in Databases and Information Systems V mostly belong to novel fields of IS and database research such as database technology and the semantic web, ontology-based IS, IS and AI technologies and IS integration. The contribution of Dr. Jari Palomäki showed how different ontological commitments affect the way we are modeling the world when creating an information system. As semantic technologies have been gaining more attention recently, a special session on semantic interoperability of IS was organized. The invited talks from each Baltic State gave a good insight how semantic interoperability initiatives are developing in each of the Baltic States and how they relate to the European semantic interoperability framework.

The tremendous growth in use of information technology (IT) has led to an increased interest in understanding its social and economic impacts. This book presents examples of crosscutting research that has been conducted to understand the impact of information technology on personal, community, and business activities. It explores ways in which the use of methodology from economics and social sciences contributes to important advances in understanding these impacts. The book discusses significant research issues and concerns and suggests approaches for fostering increased interdisciplinary research on the impacts of information technology and making the results of this research more accessible to the public and policymakers. This volume is expected to influence funding priorities and levels of support for interdisciplinary research of this kind.

The NATO Advances Research Workshop (ARW) 'Secure Telematic Applications for National Scale Projects' is organized in the frame of the National Week of Information Technologies and Sixth International Congress 'Scientific and Methodological Facilitation of the Development of Informatization and the System of Scientific and Technical Information in the Republic of Belarus. Secure Telematic Applications in National and International Projects'. The participants of the event came to Minsk from all regions of Europe, as well as from Asia and Africa. Besides the general ARW topic, the participants also discussed the progress in the activity of the High Technologies Park, the creation of the corporate network of libraries of Belarus on the basis of the National Library of Belarus and the newest technologies of e-government. The presentations are also oriented on creation of the National Scientific and Research Computer Network of the Republic of Belarus on the basis of Academic Network BASNET. It is expected that the scientific and practical achievements of the forum will considerably influence both the development of the information technologies and their utilization for advantage of the national economy of Belarus and all participating countries.
