Christian Metaphysics and Neoplatonism by Albert Camus
Camus called the transition from Hellenism to Christianity \"the true and only turning point in history.\" For Camus, modernity was not fully comprehensible without an examination of the aspirations that were first articulated in antiquity and that later received their clearest expression in Christianity. These aspirations amounted to a fundamental reorientation of human life in politics, religion, science, and philosophy. This work marks his first attempt to understand the relationship between Greek philosophy and Christianity as he charted the movement from the Gospels through Gnosticism and Plotinus to what he calls Augustine's \"second revelation\" of the Christian faith. Srigley's translation retains a great degree of literalness, and his annotations include nearly all of Camus' original citations
Aristotle and Hamilton on Commerce and Statemanship
Although America's founders may have been inspired by the political thought of ancient Greece and Rome, the United States is more often characterized by its devotion to the pursuit of commerce. Michael Chan reconsiders this view of America through close readings of Aristotle and Alexander Hamilton, showing that America at its founding was neither as modern nor as low as we have been led to believe. Chan first examines Aristotle's views of economics as presented in the Politics, arguing that Aristotle was not as hostile to commerce as is commonly believed. He then turns to a detailed account of the political economy of Hamilton, a proponent of an advanced industrial republic modeled on Great Britain. By reflecting on Hamilton in the context of Aristotle's own reflections on commerce, Chan casts him in a new light that cuts across the ongoing debate about liberal versus classical republican elements of the American founding.

Philosophical anthropology
2009
While recognizing the human being as an individual with a particular genetic makeup and history, Langan also probes the real essence of Human Being that philosophers have tended to ignore. He argues that Human Being is the result of the experiences of humans throughout time-an ontological reality that not only incorporates our collective memories, institutions, habits, ethical practices, and religious faiths but also unfolds in time with its own history to inform individuals in the present.
American Way of Peace
In The American Way of Peace, Jan S. Prybyla traces the implementation of an idea derived from bedrock American values that has shaped the American character from the nation's beginning. The idea-simple, generous, optimistic, and effective-was and remains to give people realizable hope, an attainable dream, by creating a peaceful, secure, and materially comfortable world, a Pax Americana, the American Way of Peace.

2007
From Abraham Lincoln's stance on international slavery to George W. Bush's incursions on the world stage, American presidents and other leaders have taken decisive actions to shape our country's foreign policy. This new collection of essays provides analytical narratives of how and why policies were devised and implemented that would determine the place of the United States in the international arena from the 1860s to the present. Presidents, Diplomats, and Other Mortals is both a collection of compelling historical studies and an overarching case study of the role of individuals in foreign policymaking and an insightful review of some of history's most important moments. Taken together, these essays provide a fitting tribute to Robert H. Ferrell, the trailblazing scholar in whose honor the book was written.
Beginning the Quest
2009
This analysis of Voegelin's legal and political writings during the 1920s and 1930s opens with Voegelin's efforts, following the trauma of defeat in World War I, at understanding the relation of law and the study of law (Staatslehre) to what he then called \"sociohistorical reality.\" Cooper examines Voegelin's The Authoritarian State (1936), which argues that Austria was more an administrative unit than a body politic. As a final point, Cooper deals with the concept of \"political religions\" that Voegelin developed in the 1938 book of that name. The crisis resulting in World War II led Voegelin to develop ever-more-comprehensive accounts of the disorder and political convulsions of the day. The \"quest\" of the title of this study continued until Voegelin's death.

2006
One of the few books to explore fully the political dimensions of the emerging church, Jesus and the Gospel Movement brings studies of Jesus and Christology into dialogue with today's social and political sciences. William Thompson-Uberuaga seeks to penetrate the mist surrounding the historical Jesus by inviting readers to imagine him through the perspective of his relationships and to consider how those relationships helped shape his personality and commitments-not just the intellectual aspects but also his feelings, his affectionate bonds, and the reciprocal bonds he stimulated in others
Thorstein Veblen and the enrichment of evolutionary naturalism
2007
One of America's most influential social critics, Thorstein Veblen authored works deeply rooted in evolutionary biology and American philosophical naturalism. Now one of today's preeminent Veblen scholars ranges widely over the man's writings to show how evolutionary naturalism underlies his social theory and criticism, shapes his satire, and binds his work together. Veblen's evolutionary naturalism, with its unflattering evaluation of America's self-selected special place in the international arena, casts doubt on today's foreign interventions, and it also provides a much-needed antidote to the resurgence of creationist thought in American culture. Rick Tilman shows that Veblen's ideas are still valuable to contemporary social scientists-indeed, that his method of analysis and values are sorely needed to help us avoid wasteful consumption, predation, and the persistence of religious superstition.
The postmodern imagination of Russell Kirk
Author of The Conservative Mind, Russell Kirk (1918-1994) was a principal architect of the American intellectual conservative movement. This book takes a closer look at his works on such subjects as law, history, economics, and statesmanship to introduce a new generation of readers to the depth and range of his thought. By stressing the importance of Kirk's perception of imagination, Gerald J. Russello offers a new approach to understanding him, showing not only that Kirk laid the groundwork for the \"new conservatism\" of the 1950s and '60s, but also that his work evolved into a sophisticated critique of modernity paralleled in the work of some postmodern critics of liberalism. Russello has forged a lively and provocative work that will be a valuable resource for anyone seeking to understand Kirk or conservative thought.
