The Writing on the Walls: The Graffiti of the Intifada
1996
Argues that graffiti painted on the stone walls of the Israeli-occupied West Bank (Palestine) during the intifada, late 1980s-1990, served as a form of cultural production & political contest, drawing on 1990 fieldwork. It is shown that the graffiti spoke to multiple audiences by recording history & forming & transforming social relationships. For Palestinians, graffiti signaled a breach in Palestinian-Israeli relations & functioned as a communicative device in ongoing resistance to occupation. The graffiti alternatively evoked praise & opposition among Palestinians, mirroring the internal cultural dialogue of the Palestinian community. Themes captured by the graffiti centered on issues such as the meaning of collaboration, Palestinian-Arab relations, morals, the place of religion in society, & authority. For Israelis, graffiti symbolized either defiance & lawlessness or the futility of occupation. 2 Figures, 21 References. D. M. Smith
