La guerra en México y el Caribe: lo inadvertido, lo oculto y lo olvidado es un trabajo conjunto de quince autores dedicados al estudio de las guerras irregulares desde diversas perspectivas y con el objetivo de ofrecer nuevas reflexiones e interpretaciones sobre el tema. El objetivo principal es tratar de deconstruir mitos nacionales e ir más allá de la tradicional historiografía militar nacionalista. En esta ocasión, la región de estudio se amplía del Caribe a México. Este texto es el tercer volumen de una serie, resultado del proyecto de investigación Guerras Irregulares en el Caribe, un proyecto de largo aliento desarrollado en el marco del seminario El Caribe Visiones Históricas de la Región. Los trabajos reunidos proponen acercarnos a la vida de hombres y mujeres en escenarios de guerra, observando su vida diaria a través de una mirada desde la historia social y cultural. Asimismo, la atención está puesta en manifestaciones como la poesía, la música, el baile, la pintura y la cultura en general. El lector encontrará también reflexiones sobre el dolor, la memoria, los silencios, así como trabajos enfocados en el estudio de las relaciones internacionales y la guerra. Como constatará el lector, los ensayos reunidos en el presente volumen, enfatizan aspectos que habían pasado inadvertidos, quedado ocultos o habían sido olvidados.

Restoring America’s military prowess
The U.S. military spends more than 14 countries combined and possesses state-of-the art weapons and equipment, yet after 13 years of effort, {dollar}1.4 trillion, and some 6,000 casualties, it still has been unable to defeat its enemies in Afghanistan and Iraq. The book explains why and how it can be remedied. It first demonstrates the negative effects of four factors that are prerequisites for military success and that have undermined U.S. military performance since the end of the Cold War. These include uneven civil-military relations; an inability to formulate and execute sound campaign plans; a mistaken approach to counter-insurgency, irregular warfare, and stability operations; and inattention to military options other than regime change. It also acknowledges that other factors often also intervene, and that the enemy plays a decisive role in military outcomes. Still, if the United States is to preserve the use of military force as a reasonable (albeit last resort) policy option, it must develop the means to maintain healthy, reliable civil-military relations, design and execute sound campaign plans appropriate to the adversary in question and the threat it poses to U.S. interests, conduct effective counter-insurgency and irregular warfare campaigns suitable given the size and capabilities of today's all volunteer armed forces, and develop a menu of military options beyond regime change. The intent is to bring attention to the under-performance of the U.S. armed forces in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere and prescribe remedies. These solutions cannot be left solely in the hands of the Department of Defense and congressional action and oversight will be essential to favorable outcomes. This is a timely survey as the military is facing downsizing in response to budget pressure that will constrain defense and counter-terrorism spending.

Armed conflict, peace audit and early warning 2014 : stability and instability in South Asia
This volume addresses three major security aspects in South Asia - armed conflicts, peace audit and early warning. The essays span the entire range of armed conflicts, including inter-state and intra-state actors in the region. An innovative attempt is also made to audit the peace processes in conflict-driven environments since certain areas have witnessed an end to armed conflicts. Addressing the gap between the end of violence and the response to peace, it assesses whether peace processes are fragile in South Asia. The volume further highlights early warning of impending armed conflicts permitting the placement of ameliorative measures for dealing with the situation from a law and order perspective. The role of internal and electoral politics is of special significance here. Topical and up-to-date, the essays address peace processes in Nagaland and Manipur, talks with the Taliban, elections in Nepal, ten years of Indo-Pak cease fire, and the common divide in Jammu and Kashmir, among others.
